The Brit List - September 2021

avatar

Introduction

I started compiling these lists in December 2020 to continue something @pennsif used to do as I think it helps bring the community together. Since then I have found lots more people to include. @HiveSQL has been really useful for this. I use Python with beem (by @holger80) in a script to generate what you see here. Some of the post is manual as I like to include some commentary and I will keep tweaking it. I am open to suggestions for improvements. I aim to do a fresh list on the first Saturday of each month.

Flag
Logo by @barge

I also rely on the community to let me know of more people to include who may not have obvious account metadata. You can find me in the @teamuksupport Discord to discuss it or drop me a comment.

The list will include anyone living in the UK as well as Brits who have moved abroad. Inclusion on this list does not mean I recommend people, but I will remove accounts if they are known to be abusing Hive or are falsely reporting their location. If you have lost control of your account through phishing or other means then let me know so that I can update your entry.

Previous editions

What it means

The numbers above are for those who had posted or commented in the previous month. In the lists below I break each region into three lists:

  • Active as above.
  • Just voting. I will guess that a lot of these use automatic votes, e.g. HiveVote. Previously there were some that appear to have been compromised as they vote for known abusers. Those are now excluded until I hear that they have recovered control.
  • Inactive in the last month, but most have done something since Hive started. We can hope to bring them back.

I want to count people rather than accounts as some have several. I can include those in brackets if you want. Let me know if you want me to update your listing. You can be as specific as you like about your location.

Commentary

The number of active Brits is up this month after a couple of months when it dropped. We had lots of new people join up over the last 30 days. I suspect there are actually a lot more who have joined @splinterlands as the statistics for the game site show a lot of visitors coming from the UK. I would hope some of them will look at the social side and other dapps.

The biggest increases were in the south east and 'somewhere in the UK'.

The boost in the $HIVE price may help too. Perhaps people who had taken a break from Hive will come back. I have seen a few dormant accounts start posting again as some were not on my list, but my scripts detect the activity.

We need Hive to be talked about more as a place to socialise and bypass censorship as well as a way to earn. I get frustrated by other platforms that bombard you with advertising whilst hiding the stuff you might actually want to see. I want my Hive feed to be full of music and other great content that I can reward.

I have seen some accounts who have UK on their profile, but the posts lead me to think that is not true. I cannot verify every case, but let me know if you spot anything odd. I want this list to be useful to those organising meet-ups. If there are enough people in your area then set something up. It does not have to be anything fancy. Just find a venue and set a date. Let me know and I will share the details.

I think so too. Still amazing how few active (and known about) UK accounts there are. I have brought a fair few people here but all of them left/ignored/got confused after a very short time. I wonder what needs to happen to get them back. I fear money and price isn’t a sure fire way. It seems to be convenience and learning something new.

Anyway, good stuff! Keep on with it, we appreciated what you’re doing in place of Pennsif

It's a shame @pennsif doesn't want to use Hive. I don't know what drove him away. The apps have improved and I think Hive is easier to use than when it started. It is different to other platforms, but many non-techie people manage to use it. I think engagement matters as people need to see feedback. We need to reach some critical mass where that improves.

Yeah I wonder sometimes. I occasionally peak over on Steem to see what’s going on. Seems not very much. He still runs updates over there but I’m not sure who for. He doesn’t get much real engagement - mainly random looking Chinese bot accounts and the occasional real comment, it seems.

His posts seem well rewarded by whales. Other than that I don’t see the appeal, personally.

Would be great to see him back here 😀
Maybe one day.

You’re right, things are getting easier to use.
But I find that the idea of keys and long strings on random characters puts people off from logging in. Even though there are many log in options (like Ecency passcode and PeakD browser extension) they just don’t like the unfamiliarity.

I love Hive. It’s exciting to be a part of and the basics can be picked up if you just simply try. Facebook and Twitter have set the standard for convenience, and Hive needs to match that somehow.

The keys are not really avoidable with blockchain, but I rarely see them after setting up Keychain. That makes it really easy to use the various dapps, but I do think there should be more branding of Hive as a platform as people can be using something like Splinterlands without realising they could log into the others.

We need good tutorials to get people started and those need to be easy to find. I'm sure the community could put something together. Hive.blog and peakd do have some of that already.

Bear in mind that the developer teams are tiny compared to the big sites. They have to focus their efforts on what matters most. I know peakd are looking into usability.

Absolutely, keys are fundamental but to new people they are definitely intimidating and a bit of a pain.

Totally agree and understand that these are far far smaller teams that are developing everything than the big social networks.
It’s all a matter of time before things have evolved nicely enough to scale up. Great to hear PeakD are considering the UX elements. They will be unstoppably powerful if they get it right!

Cut out the jargon, make it look pretty and tell people only what they need to know and see to be able to contribute to all the amazing communities on hive

He still made more than most people on that post. I know he is active on 'the other site' and that will not make him friends here. Don't seem to be many active Brits over there, but it's his choice. Hope you are well.

You say that as someone with a very well paid full time job. I doubt it’s possible to live off 18 dollar posts every few days. His life is these sites from what I see he is a very active member of discord, he runs radio shows, interviews people ( thars how I interacted with him), researches the sites and posts. You have never been down voted either I don’t think.

I don’t think you understand the psychological affect when someone works really hard on a post, gets good rewards and has them snatched away st the last minute just because someone who has more stake than most on the site, personally doesn’t like them. We will never agree on this I don’t think and I will never engage with anyone who downvotes others and takes away their livelihoods. To me it is morally repulsive. Each to their own of course I can’t stop someone from doing it but I will not engage with anyone who does it.

Well I have downvoted lots of people on Hive, but that is because they are actively abusing the platform with plagiarism or excessive self votes. I do not generally do it for differences of opinion.

The community have to moderate the platform as nobody else is going to do it. That is how it was designed. There are finite rewards to share out each day and we want them to go where they are deserved. Of course opinions will vary on what deserves rewards and we have lots of people with strong/radical opinions. Your case of losing big rewards was down to someone thinking that rancho/haejin is not serving Hive well with their votes. I know that hurt, but I can see you are doing much better than most people.

You can argue about what deserves rewards, but it is not necessarily about how hard you work or what it cost to create something. I'm sure you can sell your art anyway. Hive is something new and radical. It is bound to have issues along the way. Why not just enjoy this extra income you would not have otherwise?

I don't think the downvote mechanism will radically change despite some people crying for change. Many of them will be like you and got the odd big DV after getting some big upvotes. I just saw someone complaining when they still made over $100 on the post.

Stay well.

You have never been down voted either I don’t think.

We both get downvoted daily, if you only knew.

It's rare that someone is downvoted due to being disliked, especially by an account with a large stake.

As Steve says, daily rewards/inflation is finite and it's generally a disagreement over payout.

Posting multiple times a day can easily be seen as being greedy, as could posting on Hive and Steem (many large accounts had all their Steem stolen so you can see why they don't like this).

Downvotes are essential, but those who haven't spent days tracking circle-jerks and crazy self-voting don't really understand this.

Never downvoted? LOL! I bet I've had it more than you, but other people support me because I contribute to the community. Yes, I have other income, but I have put a lot of effort into Hive because I give a shit about it. Some people retaliate when I act against their abuse. Complaining about the system that has given you $300 on a post seems a bit ungrateful.

I’m complaining about the down voters, not the whole of hive, the downvoters are ruining what could be great. The downvoters have given me nothing only taken! I guarantee they never gave me an upvote of any worth... go check! And they regularly get huge upvotes themselves on average posts. One guy reverse psychology or something I even met him in real life he gives some of my posts 17 c but then just down voted two of them 5 dollars each. Sorry it’s negative energy, puts out negative feelings and I want nothing to do with anyone that partakes.

Maybe appreciate that you are making a lot more from multiple posts per day (plus less on Steemit and Blurt) than most people make. It seems some big accounts like you and may not even comment to say why.

Those who downvote you may just think some of your posts make more than they should. That is their right as stakeholders. They are likely to be giving votes to others and not just the select few.

Complaining about something that pays you so well seems wrong to me. It's not 'negative energy, it's economics. You make more, others get less. I appreciate you need income, but nobody is entitled to Hive rewards.

I am not going to downvote you, but constant complaining is not a good look. Are you one of those who refuses to promote Hive because some people get downvoted? You have the option to leave if you don't like it. Your choice. I will just get on with what I do and that will include downvoting abuse.

I’m not talking about the great people here and the supportive people that I’ve worked hard to connect with. I’m talking about the people who have nothing positive to do with their time than take away from people and create a negative energy. It’s no fun getting your first big payout in ages and waiting to see if it’ll ever get to the rewards section. No one can find any stability or trust here whilst this continues. How can anyone invest time and money when that happens? I had a good run and actually stated rly investing time here, I was travelling so I could almost work full time on posts and I then as soon as yoh get a down vote or have to check constantly to see if it’s goint to make payment after getting all excited it’s a mind f. Imagine if every week your payment check could be taken away from so you didn’t ever know how much would be removed each month. How can you expect any creatives to exist like that if this becomes a decent part of their income. Of course it’s in the site rules but I know for one of they remove the ability to downvote I would actually invest money in this site and really go for it in terms of creating.

Downvotes are a necessary part of Hive. Live with that and the fact that rewards are not settled until payout.

You are investing time and getting paid. Absolutes like

No one can find any stability or trust here

are blatantly untrue. A small minority get downvotes and pissing off those who care about Hive does you no favours.

As for 'take them to court'. No need, we just remove the plagiarists' ill-gotten rewards. Can you imagine what it would cost to track them down and pay legal costs?

Enjoy your rewards.

0

Down voting genuine spam like repetition of posts all the time and plagerism is a bit different but even then if someoen does plagerise you can take them to court.

They also might think that 5 posts in one day is just plain old milking. The rewards pool is for everyone.

She refuses to get it. I have met her and I understand she's an artist trying to make a living, but Hive does not owe her a living. Her impressions of how the whales operate are mistaken. Some of them are malicious, but most care about Hive. I expect you've had your share of downvotes.

I have had a fair amount. Some proper biggies too.

I can tell she doesn't get it. This cry for no downvotes from a few shows no awareness of how things work. They just don't understand is not yours till it's yours. I got that in the first couple of months I was here!

acidyo has down a lot more for Hive than you have. People appreciate that. He's only posting about once per week on his main Hive account. He could make more if he did it daily. For some people it's not just about money. Where is is posting on Steemit? That platform can just die as far as I am concerned. It got corrupted. Just see who gets most of the rewards.

We will have to disagree massively on this one.

He’s making so much money on steemit right now I doubt he cares.

Where? Anyway, Steemit don't care about how people earn, so people will milk it whilst they can. Just see the difference in price between HIVE and STEEM. That will increase.

I can't post on Steemit as my account is censored for giving a shit.

Hive is doing well like I said if there was no downvotes and risk of being taken to zero at any point I would really invest my time here and not spread myself, creatives do that because they are living in fear on here that if they say something that someone doesn’t like their whole wage goes. You wouldn’t have a job like that. I guarantee if your job had a variable pay check that took away from you st random if your boss disagreed with you and aome months could be 0 you wouldn’t feel very safe to only have that job either. I guarantee it.

I am grateful for everyone wh has supported me and always express that. The down voters have done nothing for me and in my eyes nothing for the platform only make it a horrible environment: thars my opinion and we are all entitled to one. I guess if enough people share it they will pass the proposal to remove the downvote.in wich case I would promote hive strongly. As it is I still got ppl in here I got @lauralauze on here just from travelling in mexico and she’s doing great. I just don’t go around telling everyone the people onboard.

There is nothing wrong with having posts of 100 dollars that’s about £40. Why on earth should we cap peoples earning potential. The drive to be able to do well and be rewarded for content is what drives people. Many of my posts are about £3. I was putting in almost full time effort to earn that. I doubt you would even go to work for an average of £25 a day. People want to feel they can evolve and grow not be capped.

Nobody should take Hive rewards for granted. As I have said before you are getting a share of the daily rewards and most make less than you. It should not be compared with a salaried job. Totally different economics.

Thats because you have a highly paid salary job. Most creatives are freelancers and at the least use this as a boost. If your spending hours a day on engaging, often using materials to make things, creating, making content and your building something then it absolutely does become a part of your income you come to rely on. It’s an absolutely awful energy to get excited when you achieve a highly paid post and then at the last minute get it down voted because someone doesn’t like you or your opinion. In My opinion it creates a horrible energy, now if you get a well paid post there is no excitement only anxiety.

So you keep saying. How many times did you lose more than half your rewards? Probably less than the number of replies to me today. I've had all my rewards for a week wiped out before, but my 'positive energy' with the community got me most of it back. I do not take my rewards for granted and my 'highly paid salary job' has bugger all to do with my attitude to Hive.

Well that’s also not cool that someone did that to you. That’s why I don’t retaliate or join in because it’s just a stupid game no one can win. It’s not fair you got a weeks worth of posts taken to zero for an opinion. I would support you and speak out for you if you wernt a fan of down voting yourself. There is no way you felt positivity when that happened or it made you feel good and joyful. Down voting makes people feel negative. It’s even worse when you don’t have a highly paid full time job.

Actually I felt really positive because people supported me and backed me up for taking a stand against a serial abuser who was taking $1000s/week from the platform. I have pointed out the issues, but constant complaining will wear people down and not earn you friends.

I'm off to feed the peakcocks and sit on my gold throne earned from my 'highly paid job'.

You deserve your highly paid job because you no doubt worked hard through life to achieve it. I am just saying of course someone with a high fixed income who maybe got paid in full over coronavirus won’t be able to understand someone on the edge and how it’s a very different energy for them to see a post go down in value.

I’m not even saying that’s me. Hive was rly rly useful to me over that time tho but for others it was an absolute life line between homeless and a roof. Only they can understand the feelings of then thinking they will be ok and then not within the space of 5 days. That type of energy can drive people to suicide.

It has a lot to do with your attitude to hive. Anyone with a fixed highly paid job has a good level of security. Freelancers wages bounce all over the place as it is and a big payout can sometimes keep a roof over their head on a bad month. Especially after having no jobs over covid. Of course it’s different than someone who has a very stable life and job outside, I’m sure they are mentally affected less easily by downvotes.

Honestly how would you feel if your pay check for your job could be taken away last minute if anyone in your office decided they didn’t like you, you got too much money, you got more than them or you expressed an opinion one of them didn’t like. How would you feel if some months you earnt nothing at all from your job? If hive rly wants to attract super invested bloggers it has to have some form of stability as you evolve and grow and build your page.

It has been like that from the start, yet you are still here four years on. You must enjoy the rewards you do get.

I said that I love the idea behind the platforms that you can earn from content creation, find more freedom, build communities. I honestly only came to hive as most people and communities I followed moved here and it’s the people and cross support that makes anything. I prefer the layout of blurt though if everyone moved there I would love it even more as then there is all the people, energy, cross support and no negativity. Or if hive removed the capacitY to downvote so easily that would also be amazing to me. That’s why I don’t leave hive because I’ve spent four years building friendships, connections and cross support networks here that I’m not goint to let a few people ruin. At one point I was on the verge but I realised how much time I had spent building these connections. At the end of the day I don’t support or agree with down voting. I think it sucks, I think it’s negative and I think it makes people feel bad and not trust the platform. I should be entitled to have that opinion without being ‘punished’. If you love downvoting that’s your opinion. I can just choose to try and not cross paths with those who engage in it and work on building like minded connedtions. It shouldn’t be ‘ if you don’t support down voting’ your an ungrateful person who should be downvoted lol: to me thars everything wrong that you can’t question anything or have an opinion without this attitude.

There is a girl on blurt who gave up her job as she only needs 15 dollars a day to support her family in her country and she was regularly making enough here, after a few years of effort to leave her job. Now she got downvotes and it ruined her life. Sure you can say don’t rely on any one income bit irs like you being made redundant just cause one person doesn’t like your opinion on the shape of the globe or something. The reality is everyone would be in arms about it, it would go to court and you would have some rights.

The downvoting is killing community spirit, freedom of speech and makes everyone feel negative logging into the platform. It’s a shame as so much good here but I’m dissaponted in seeing people who I respected joining in. Like I said nothing I can do other than choose to have nothing to do with anyone behaving in such a manner so I’m not annoyed by seeing the negativity.

I was half-joking. I'd really like to keep the breakdown geographical, but if there were enough in Brighton I could split it off. Need to keep the list manageable. If we got loads more active people I might stop listing the inactive ones. I had some hope they might see that they had been mentioned, but many will not be checking for that. Some do come back anyway though.
