The beautiful aridity of Araya, Sucre state - Venezuela / La bella aridez de Araya, estado Sucre - Venezuela

The beaches of eastern Venezuela are among the most visited in the country and Sucre state has hundreds of options, from those surrounded by lush vegetation to totally arid ones, such as the one I will show you below, located on the Araya peninsula, north of Cumana.

Las playas del oriente de Venezuela están entre las más visitadas del país y el estado Sucre cuenta con cientos de opciones, desde las rodeadas con frondosa vegetación hasta las totalmente áridas como la que les mostraré a continuación ubicada en la península de Araya, al norte de Cumaná.

On my trip through Sucre, Araya beach was the first in this state in which I bathed, on a day with total blue skies that intensified the brightness that this place has, famous for its salt flats and for a documentary that put it in the map of world cinematography and that I had seen shortly before going there.

En mi viaje por Sucre, la playa de Araya fue la primera de este estado en la que me bañé, en un día con total cielo azul que intensificó el brillo que tiene este lugar, famoso por sus salinas y por un documental que lo puso en el mapa de la cinematografía mundial y que yo había visto poco antes de ir allá.

Araya, a 1959 film, directed and written by the Venezuelan filmmaker Margot Benacerraf, shows a day in the life of people who work in the salt flats and in fishing. Filmed in black and white and with a beautiful photograph, it was awarded at the famous Cannes Film Festival, in France, and is considered among the best Latin American works of all time.

Araya, película de 1959, dirigida y escrita por la cineasta venezolana Margot Benacerraf, muestra un día en la vida de la gente que trabaja en las salinas y en la pesca. Filmada en blanco y negro y con una fotografía hermosa, fue premiada en el famoso Festival de Cannes, en Francia, y está considerada entre las mejores obras latinoamericanas de todos los tiempos.

From the city of Cumaná, where my mother and I were staying for a few days, we decided to travel back and forth to Araya and and get to know some of its geography. For that we take a taxi and go to the port, there the boats or “tapaítos”, as they are called, leave, which take about half an hour to reach Araya. You can also go by road but the trip takes about 3 hours.

Desde la ciudad de Cumaná, donde mi mamá y yo nos estábamos quedando unos días, decidimos viajar ida y vuelta hacia Araya y conocer algo de su geografía. Para eso tomamos un taxi y nos dirigimos al puerto, allí salen las lanchas o “tapaítos”, como les llaman, los cuales tardan una media hora en llegar a Araya. También se puede ir por carretera pero el viaje dura unas 3 horas.

After buying our tickets we get on the “tapaítos”, which are roofed and go at high speed. These boats leave you in the town of Manicuare and to go to the beach that is a few minutes away, you take a bus.

Después de comprar nuestros boletos nos montamos en los “tapaítos”, los cuales están techados y van a alta velocidad. Estas lanchas te dejan en la población de Manicuare y para ir a la playa que queda a unos pocos minutos, tomas un autobús.

When you arrive at this desert peninsula of 642 km2, you notice its attractive aridity, just a little vegetation (xerophilous and dry forests) and a lot of heat, so you have to protect yourself well from the sun.

Al llegar a esta desértica península de 642 Km2, observas su atractiva aridez, apenas algo de vegetación (xerófila y de bosques secos) y mucho calor, por lo que hay que protegerse bien del sol.

Our goal was to go to the beach, get to know the castle that is there and be able to see the famous salt flats.

Nuestro objetivo era ir a la playa, conocer el castillo que está allí y poder ver las famosas salinas.

We arrived before 10:00 in the morning, there were not many people, as on the beach they offer chairs and umbrellas, we paid to use them until the afternoon and then we dedicated ourselves to enjoying the sea.

Llegamos antes de las 10:00 de la mañana, no había mucha gente, como en la playa ofrecen sillas y sombrillas, pagamos para usarlas hasta la tarde y luego nos dedicamos a disfrutar del mar.

El Castillo (Castle) beach, as it is called because it has this structure there, is quite wide, with clear and calm waters.

La playa El Castillo, así se llama por tener esta estructura allí, es bastante amplia, con aguas claras y tranquilas.

After bathing and sunbathing, I dedicated myself to exploring the ruins of the Royal Fortress of Santiago de Arroyo of Araya or as it is popularly called: the Castle of Araya.

Después de bañarme y tomar el sol me dediqué a explorar las ruinas de la Real Fortaleza de Santiago de Arroyo de Araya o como se le dice popularmente: el Castillo de Araya.

It was built by the Spanish on a hill facing the sea with stones and wood between 1622 and 1630, according to historical data, with the aim of protecting the salt flats from the Dutch invaders, who wanted to occupy them.

Fue construido por los españoles en una colina frente al mar con piedras y madera entre 1622 y 1630, según datos históricos, con el objetivo de proteger las salinas de los invasores holandeses, quienes querían ocuparlas.

Since this region was discovered by the Spanish in 1500, it was a great source of wealth for the Spanish empire, since at that time salt was a highly valued commodity as a food preservative. Thus, Araya became for a long time a place frequented by merchants, pirates and smugglers.

Desde que esta región fue descubierta por los españoles en el año 1500, fue una gran fuente de riqueza para el imperio español, ya que en esa época la sal era un bien muy valorado como conservante de alimentos. Así, Araya se convirtió durante mucho tiempo en un lugar concurrido por mercaderes, piratas y contrabandistas.

The Dutch were defeated in their ambition to stay with the salt flats and in 1648 Spain signed peace with this country, which brought about the formalization of the market in this area of the Caribbean. Then in 1762 the Castle of Araya stopped working as a defensive structure and the Crown ordered that it be destroyed, although they could only partially blow it up.

Los holandeses fueron derrotados en su ambición de quedarse con las salinas y en el año 1648 España firmó la paz con este país, lo que trajo la formalización del mercado en esta zona del Caribe. Luego en 1762 el Castillo de Araya dejó de funcionar como estructura defensiva y la Corona ordenó que fuera destruido, aunque sólo pudieron volarlo parcialmente.

Already in the 20th century, on October 31, 1960, its ruins were declared a National Historic Monument.

Ya en el siglo XX, el 31 de octubre de 1960, sus ruinas fueron declaradas como Monumento Histórico Nacional.

It is a pity that they have damaged it to a large extent, even so, today what remains standing serves as a beautiful viewpoint towards the beach and the town.

Es una pena que lo hayan dañado en gran parte, aún así, hoy en día lo que queda en pie sirve como un bello mirador hacia la playa y el pueblo.

Then, before leaving, we went through the Mother Lagoon. The salt flats, exploited for centuries, then fell into disrepair. We couldn't observe much of the different colors that they adopt according to the time of day and sunlight because it was going to be late for us to return to Cumaná, but we did see some of their brightness.

Luego, antes de irnos, pasamos por la Laguna Madre. Las salinas, explotadas durante siglos, cayeron luego en el abandono. No pudimos observar mucho de los diferentes colores que adoptan según la hora del día y la luz solar porque se nos iba a hacer tarde para volver a Cumaná, pero sí vimos algo de su brillo.

As I read, the Araya salt flats were the most important in Venezuela and their exploitation by individuals was carried out until 1872, when the State acquired them. Then it went through ups and downs, public and private hands, and currently although it is still active, due to the general deterioration of its facilities, the production of salt is far below its potential.

Según leí, las salinas de Araya fueron las más importantes de Venezuela y su explotación por particulares se hizo hasta el año 1872, cuando el Estado las adquirió. Luego pasó por altos y bajos, manos públicas y privadas, y actualmente aunque sigue activa, debido al deterioro general de sus instalaciones, la producción de sal está muy por debajo de su potencialidad.

However, as a natural landscape it remains exceptional and is never missing from the itinerary of those who visit Araya.

Sin embargo, como paisaje natural sigue siendo excepcional y nunca falta en el itinerario de quienes visitan Araya.
