In Paris, in the peaceful Private Mansion of the Museum of Romantic Life

avatar

Hello dear Hivers and Travelers, I hope you're doing great. Today, I'd like to take you on a visual tour of a small museum in the north of Paris, where you don't often think of going, but which is a veritable haven of peace.

This private mansion belonged to Ary Scheffer, a painter who was one of the leaders of the Romantic movement in Paris. The museum contains important references to George Sand, the famous novelist, and Ernest Renan, the philosopher and historian who married Scheffer's daughter.

Contrary to my habit, this walk will be freer and less framed by references, which is also how I did the visit. The place isn't very big and I think I was also in a quiet mood, not necessarily wanting to analyse everything, but rather to enjoy the visit and the calm of this peaceful setting...

The museum is located on Rue Chaptal, and it is after this long corridor that you enter the series of buildings that make up the museum.

DSC_1430.JPG

Here we are, bright buildings, some with large windows, a courtyard with flowers in the centre and a beautiful blue sky... What more could you ask for ?

DSC_1315.JPG

DSC_1317.JPG

In this quiet little garden, far from the hustle and bustle of the nearby city, there are a large number of roses. These two, however, are the only ones I would have taken a photo of. And I would have enjoyed the others without 'capturing' them...

As soon as you step inside, the first room is dedicated to the painter who owned the hotel, Ary Scheffer.

DSC_1332.JPG

DSC_1333.JPG

Then there's the George Sand room, with lots of portraits and other representations of the novelist... But it was the next room in particular that I really enjoyed!

Here you will find a whole series of objects that once belonged to George Sand. Some of the precious objects are replicas, but on the whole, all these little relics are originals. Some might find this morbid, but I find it quite interesting !

DSC_1416.JPG

But let's take these simple yet refined staircases to see what's on offer upstairs...

DSC_1395.JPG

A few views over the peaceful little courtyard where the locals come to recharge their batteries, because I'm not lying to you, you can't hear a sound of the city in this secluded impasse... And yet we're just a stone's throw from Montmartre and Pigalle !

Here, the room is dedicated to the Orléans family, who were friends of the painter and of whom he painted several portraits. His bust in white marble dominates the scene and seems to be watching over the visitors.

DSC_1368.JPG

DSC_1375.JPG

In the next room, there are other paintings by artists who are representative of and close to the Romantic movement, but as I told you earlier that I was taking this tour at my leisure, it turns out that I didn't take the references...

DSC_1406.JPG

DSC_1408.JPG

DSC_1412.JPG

We'll finish with the room dedicated to Ernest Renan, the painter Scheffer's son-in-law, and even though I haven't really gone into detail about the works or the general architecture, I find it interesting to be immersed in this atmosphere of centuries gone by, because as you'll have noticed, everything has been preserved both inside and out !

DSC_1425.JPG

That's all for this visit, and for another hour I stayed to read in this heavenly courtyard, certainly in a city as busy as Paris !

I thank you for your reading and your time here, and hope you found it interesting. I wish you a very good day, and I'll see you soon,

Probably only in early autumn as I have to water my balcony garden EVERY day! If I don't give them water every morning, my tomatoes and chillis looks like they never had water by lunchtime 😂 There are people who could help with watering of our garden, but I don't have family here, so I have nobody who would come to water our balcony every day.

I hope you will still live in Paris by then 🙂

Oh yeah, a garden is such a beautiful thing but also a super demanding one ! Could you not install a watering system, even for some of the plants that need the most ?

Finally, I’m buying a car in few days and we’re organizing a first move of stuff from Paris. But I will still be around for sure :)

On the balcony it's a bit tricky as we get full sun from 7am to 4pm (even a bit later), so it would need to be a lot of water somehow.. well, we already accepted that this summer will be in Switzerland, but will need to do it differently next year otherwise we'll get crazy 🙂 I think 7 tomatoes, about 50 chilis, 1 pepper, 15 salads, 4 kohlrabies, 4 strawberries, 10 onions and about 20 herbs plants might be a bit too much for a balcony😂 Yes, we have a big balcony 😂 and it became our own private jungle..

Congratulations on your decision! I can't imagine my life without a car now. It will give your life a lot of flexibility 🙂

Wow, ah yeah ! You really put a lot of plants haha, this is really awesome and you’re making me curious to see some pictures !!

Maybe a dropping system could works as it’s adding water at a slow and regular rate, but for sure, for this quantity of green, it would be quite an installation ;)

You know, I’m even dreaming of driving now, I just have my full license (pass the automatic one previously) and now, I’m really impatient to have this freedom you’re talking about..!

Take good care and bravo for your garden, this must have been quite a effort and pleasure of course!

Maybe you can send me some pictures on Discord..?

We eat a lot of vegetables 😂 We're getting pickling cucumbers and snap peas already and they are so delicious! I can't wait for tomatoes and peppers 🙂 Peppers are still very tiny, so I hope that they will have enough time to give me fruit and ripen.

Indeed, that would probably not work that easily. We will go somewhere at the end of summer, so hopefully we will be ready with the harvest by then.

I got my drivers license when I was 18, then I didn't drive for 12 years, got a car and now can't live without it. It was a bit of an adjustment to drive after such a long time, but now it's like my second arm or leg for that matter 😂

I have an alt account for garden, cooking (when I have time) and short walks. I have recently posted something from the garden as well as balcony. You can check it out: @plantfuljourney

Ah, I knew something was up with that account's profile picture ! I'm going to have a look around today :)

Sorry for the late reply, I'm just back from a few adventures... and they don't seem to be about to end haha... especially about the car, I'm really looking forward to being able to drive too :)) !

Have a great new week ahead 😘

Delightful! I love those glimpses back in time - to a bygone era and lifestyle. Doesn't that barricaded staircase tempt you to sneak upstairs and discover why you aren't allowed to sneak upstairs.....?

Sorry for being that late @buckaroobaby 😱 !

Doesn't that barricaded staircase tempt you to sneak upstairs and discover why you aren't allowed to sneak upstairs.....?

I generally have the same reaction toward those signs and barricades hehe 😇 But for having work in that place a bit, I believe its the reserve upstairs :)

Have a good new week ahead, take care 😘
