Worklife - Servicing the disintegrated

avatar

Good day! Zak Ludick here from Cape Town South Africa and this is another from-work post.

As I have been posting for the last 3-4 weeks I am currently working in the dry dock in the harbor working on a ship that mines diamonds.

Well, Technically speaking this vessel's duty is to chart out the seafloor and do prospecting in order to determine the validity of mining in various areas for the rest of the Fleet.

This vessel however, It's very much the same as all the rest in the sense that it works with slurry that it sucks up from the ocean bed which tends to make the corrosion on these vessels a lot worse than just a cargo ship or a vessel that does fishing.

Slurry is a term for water and soil which is pretty much a kind of mud but generally includes very small ground up bits of abrasive material and since this vessel mines diamonds the abrasives can be very hard indeed meaning it strips off protective layers very easily and leaves the metal bare to the sea.

The picture above is a result of a combination of these conditions as well as a lack of good engineering and good servicing habits by the crew of the vessel.

First of this blower is meant to suck through the back of the unit and then blow across the coil and the motor this would enable a filter to be attached to the coil side of the device. This is an engineering fault. The designer and installer should have realized that this would not be a good installation.

The second fault is that of the vessel's crew which have not been maintaining this system by rinsing it in a routine manor constantly throughout the vessel's operation. If they had done this on a high frequency then they would be no salt and slurry build up and therefore the quill would not corrode as badly.

Cheers!

had no idea that ships were used to prospect gems like diamonds, i had the idea that diamonds would come from giant holes in the ground like that mine in Russia :D

So diamonds can come out of the ground too.

But when a river cuts through rock containing diamonds for thousands of years and sweeps the diamonds out into the sea along with other rock it is called alluvial diamonds.
