Let's Drink and Walk? [CCC's Street Art Contest #162]

Good morning!

This is a mural which I saw in the little town of Arzúa, Galicia, and as you can see by the picture, this is another town which you'll definitely cross if you're doing the Caminho de Santiago (St. James Way).

This is my entry for the CCC's Street Art Contest #162, hosted by @digi-me.

A few years ago, Street Art was considered to be criminal, an act of vandalism. But now? Things have turned around completely and as you can realize by this mural: even corporations have embraced it and are starting to use such murals as a form of advertisement for their brands.

The mural is really cool, that is certain but the publicity feels a bit weird to me.

Why?

Well, if you have heard of the Caminho de Santiago you know that is a pilgrim's path which starts either in Portugal or France and ends at the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela. Even though you don't have to be religious to do it, the origins of this pilgrimage are definitely Catholic.

So, to advertise a beer on what should be a religious experience it feels like a contradiction to me. What next? Advertising alcoholic drinks on Formula 1 events? Oh, wait, they already do that! 🤣🤣🤣

Anyway, the mural looks great and if you can ignore the publicity, it's a great artwork taking the whole side façade of an apartment building. It certainly looks a lot better than a bare brick wall...

I hope you enjoyed these shots. See you next time!

well, I guess there has been a little bit of development.
since graffiti became legal, then the beer ads suit well for that religious walk.
I am just kidding my friend.

the marketing of this beer company is really out of the world. They went quite far for the idea.

This got me thinking. I mean about the morality of it all, using religion to advertise commercial products. I liken the idea to someone on a pilgrimage to the Holy Land, doing the Via Crucis (Way of the Cross), while holding a can of Budweiser instead of a water bottle. All for the sake of commercialism, no boundaries are sacred. "Weird" may not be the appropriate word to use 🤔

it is also about the morality using art and artists for all the commercial and propaganda.

in germany, beer is very close to the catholic church. we have a lot of abbeys that originally brewed beer or still do today, e.g. andechser. the monks in germany are known for there beer drinking. there is a word "klosterbrauerei" it means something like "monastery brewery". so it is not so weird like it seems at first.

I'm familiar with the Camino, and I'm sure a lot of people do it just for the challenge and not for religious reasons who probably enjoy a beer after a long day's walking, lol, but it's still funny. I just recently listened to this guy's personal essay on YT about doing part of the Appalachian trail for I think a month, which was really quite a good listen. Anyway, one day someone waited for him at the trail to give him a beer and he said it was the best beer he'd ever had. 😂

As you said beautiful work. It must be hot on the Caminho de Santiago, so a good beer to cool down sounds like a good idea... well, better than driving an F1 car 😀. Thanks for sharing these pics on The StreetArt Community.
