Meeting Up With My University Mate After 35 Years

A few days ago, I wrote a post about my flight from Kuching to Kuala Lumpur. This was my first flight out of Sarawak for more than two years. As such, I was very excited about this trip.

During my trip to Kuala Lumpur, I managed to meet up with Wei Min who was my coursemate at Universiti Putra Malaysia(UPM). We graduated in 1985 and had not met face to face since then. Fortunately in this age of social media, we managed to keep in touch through WhatsApp and video calls. So it was nice to meet him in person.

I first met Wei Min in 1981 when we were both first-year students at the University of Agriculture Malaysia (Universiti Pertanian Malaysia which changed its name later to Universiti Putra Malaysia). We were studying for a Bachelor's Degree in Resource Economics. At UPM, both the Chinese and Indian were the minority, and so we tend to mix with each other. I am from Sarawak but Wei Min is from Serdang itself which is located only a few miles from the University. Besides attending lectures together, we were often in the same group when it comes to group assignments. Therefore we often had to work together to finish the assignment and in some cases present the assignment together.

Like me, Wei Min has retired since last year. His last post was as Purchasing Manager of a factory. Since his retirement, he has been busy with various DIY projects to improve his house. He also has a Koi pond and he used to post videos of his fish on WhatsApp. Recently, he had just started a new hobby, cooking. Prior to retirement, he has done minimal cooking. But because of his interest and through watching YouTube videos, his cooking skills have improved tremendously. That is the great thing about retirement, you get to do what you love.

Wei Min and I met up at a Kopitiam (coffee shop) at Puchong, Selangor.

This is a typical Kopitiam with many stalls selling a wide variety of food.

The tables and chairs spill over to the roadside.

It was dinner time and so the Kopitiam is very crowded. Eating out is quite affordable and so families do eat out quite often.

image.png
Most stalls have huge signs to advertise what they are selling. It should be "herbal chicken" instead of "herba chicken".

Cooking in progress.

There are many stalls selling different type of food. This stall is even selling Thai cuisine.

These are eggs boiled in tea.

We bought the duck noodles from this stall.

I opted for the duck mee as it is something that I can't get in Kuching. I could taste the herbs in the broth and the duck meat was tender and juicy. But it is a bit oily.

We finished off our dinner with some fruits.

I am at the age where I often used to think of my old friends and when I can meet them again. I am delighted to be able to meet up with Wei Min and catch up with him. Although we had not met for 35 years, we do not feel awkward at all. I hope to be able to maintain my friendship with him.

Wei Min invited to dinner at his house. I accepted immediately as I would be able to meet his family. We decided to have a mini-reunion of some of our coursemates who are staying in Kuala Lumpur. And I can't wait to taste Wei Min's cooking. Watch this space, I will write about the reunion.
