Flying Outside of Sarawak For The First Time After Two Years

was very well-behaved.

Covid 19 have caused a lot of disruptions, and for many people, their lives have been turned upside down. Businesses have closed down and a lot of people have lost their jobs. Unfortunately, there are those who have lost their loved ones to covid.

I must say that I am quite lucky as Covid has not affected me too much. Both my wife Roselind and I caught Covid in September last year. The first few days were terrible but I have since made a full recovery. Due to the lockdown, I had to stay at home and my plans for traveling after my retirement were thrown out of the window.

Sarawak started accepting international visitors from 1 April onwards. Since then, SOPs have been gradually relaxed and this made traveling easier. Since I had not left the shores of Sarawak for more than 2 years, I had been looking forward to my trip to Kuala Lumpur on 12 May 2022. I had managed to buy Air Asia tickets for slightly over RM 500 (USD120) which is quite reasonable for a round trip. I also managed to check in without much difficulty. Air Asia has implemented a new App that you had to use for checking in. You need to use the App to scan the identification card after which you need to scan your face. Previously my wife Roselind was not able to check-in using the Apps. Despite Roselind trying to open her eyes as widely as she can, the Apps keep on giving the same instruction “Please open your eyes” over and over again. This went on for more than 1 hour until out of frustration, Roselind decided that she would just go to the airport earlier and check-in there. I do hope that Air Asia will improve the App.

I had packed all my stuff a few days before my flight. I even weighed my bag to ensure that it did not exceed 15kg. I woke up early at 5 am on 12 May. By 6 a, I had already arrived at the airport 2 hours earlier before my flight at 8 am. The airport was already a hive of activity. It seems that so many people had taken advantage of the relaxed SOPs to travel. At the kiosk, I couldn’t recall the steps for depositing my luggage and had to ask a fellow passenger for assistance.

The plane was almost full except for a few empty seats at the back. I was seated next to a cute boy eight years old. He was very well-behaved and throughout the 1 hour 45 minutes flight, he was engrossed with his pad, either playing games or watching cartoons.

It seems that Air Asia must be looking for ways to increase its revenue. It keeps on promoting its merchandise and went as far as stating the benefits of the merchandise and the limited number of units that it has in stock. Other than that, the flight was smooth and I arrived in Kuala Lumpur on time.
