Hungry Ghost Festival

(Edited)

Malaysia is known to be one of the modern country, well developed and has a decent size of domestic production. However, nothing can stop the Chinese superstitious of praying to anything and everything that move and or even doesn't move.

Every year during the mid of 7th months of lunar calendar, local Chinese will start burning Joss stick Joss paper and the modern Chinese has even made Joss androd phone, Joss Teslla model 33 and don't get me wrong, I've also seen Nikke and Adidos before 🤣🤣🤣

It's funny how Chinese has evolved these years, where we used to keep our old man by our side until the day they die. Nowadays, not so much. Usually older people gets checked in to old folks home. Therefore, majority of the Chinese will spend a fortune to make up what they owe their folks, burn stuff so the deceased can enjoy at "the other realm".

Mid of the month has is full moon, and full moon is somehow related to werewolves right? So, this is where the Chinese coincidentally match with hungry Ghost. Usually from the beginning of the month of 7th, the hell door will be opened.

And usually by the mid of the month, where the moon brightest, all hell broke loose. People are "advised" to stay home, stay safe, and sleep early to avoid bad things happened to them. Coincidentally, I lost a best friend of mine where the hospital report covid claimed his life at the hungry Ghost month last year.

I'm not exactly sure what's wrong with my mind. I think I'm the only Chinese idiot walking in the late evening, capturing photo of full moon and witnessing people do their open burning, and thinking of the irony. They burn stuff for their ancestors, which they proudly pray God to rest their grandpa soul in heaven, but they burn Joss Teslla to hell.

May be somehow it's real. I reached home to found the boy had a fall and knocked his leg. So I drove him to the clinic for treatment and dressing. As we checked in the medical facility, there's another Chinese family there. There's this young guy looks extremely sick, and there is this lady scolding him for not listening to her and proceed to pee at the tree during the hungry Ghost month, now his little duck is swelling.

I try not to let my boy listen to those stuff. I sincerely believe all these supernatural "thing" can find their way enter into our life when we don't have a strong mind. So I tried to distract him with my phone... As soon as I turned around... That Chinese family were no where to be found 😰 was that an illusion I had in my mind?

And then the very loud lady open the door and grab her hand bag where she's too busy nagging the guy and left it there 🤣 apparently I was too attracted by the YouTube video trying to distract my kid. After the treatment, we proceed to take a walk down the lane and purchased our next day breakfast. The hungry Ghost month still not ended yet, but I guess the crazy open burning season had just came to a halt after half month "celebration" is done.

In Cambodia, we celebrate this festival too. Actually, some people doesn’t celebrate this as a ritual, but my family does. We have prepared many food and stuff.

And I often walk by these food and drinks, I will be wondering I can ever grab a bite 😂 but then, it's for the hungry Ghost. Either I join the ghost or the ghost come and find me because I ate their food 🤣

It is indeed that time of the year again. The same situation in Kuching, offerings everywhere and hell money being thrown every where as well.

Haaaaaaaaa ,superstitions and their consequences , my opinion on the subject is : if you have superstitions you limit yourself , that is , you can not go under a ladder , if you see a black cat it 's bad luck , my question , you have to go under the ladder to can you get to the designated place, then what do you do, then the black cat, you can't paint it white, you can't remove the skin etc, so it's better to do what you do, laugh at the subject and not mention it to other people, they will call you a bad person and they could even kill you because you generate bad luck :)

Totally agree with you buddy. But we can't deny this is part of the culture from a multiracial country

I've seen this practiced by ethnic Chinese Cambodians a few times, but I never had a close Khmer-Chinese friend that I could ask about the details and history of all the festivals and holidays they celebrate here. Love your humorous snippets in this post, and now I know a wee bit more about the Hungry Ghost Festival.

Technically, it's a taboo month for Chinese. We can see significant less traffic during this month, and higher amount of fatal road accidents. And previous year similar period of time(August), covid kill increased by 50% more compare to the month before and after 🤣

Well that certainly isn't gonna do anything to lessen superstitious beliefs. Gonna bookmark this vid and wait for free wi-fi and or try to find a podcast about it.
