Vibrant Atmosphere on the quays of Lyon and the discovery of an Extraordinary Art Piece

avatar

This week I'm travelling to Lyon for a project I'll be telling you about shortly, which is taking up quite a lot of my time and that's why I'm perhaps a little less free these days. Fortunately, I still have time to go out a little every day to enjoy the city where I spent my teenage years.

When I left, I was very happy not to live there any more and to have the opportunity to discover Paris - which I've been doing for over 15 years now. But little by little, as I came back to Lyon, I came to appreciate more and more those warm-colored facades and, in my mind, this city is the beginning of the South of France, a premise of Provence and even, in a way, an introduction to the atmosphere that can be found in Italy, Spain or Portugal.

As in those countries, the city has an important Roman history, but unfortunately I don't think I'll be able to take a tour of the museum, which is located on the Fourvière hill not far from the Gallo-Roman antiques theaters I told you about this winter.

But without further ado, let's start this little walk...!

IMG_7399.JPG

IMG_7400.JPG

This is St Paul's station, named after the area where the church of the same name is located. From there, I walk down a small alleyway that leads to the quays...

IMG_7401.JPG

Here are the quays from the other side of the road, but let's get a little closer to the little footbridge we're about to cross.

IMG_7402.JPG

IMG_7403.JPG

IMG_7404.JPG

The St Vincent footbridge crosses the Saône river, one of the two major rivers that flow through Lyon. The second is the Rhône.

I think you'll understand my love of these brightly colored facades by now !

IMG_7423.JPG

IMG_7424.JPG

And here, from both sides of the footbridge, upstream on the first image and on the second, in the direction of the current, towards the confluence with the Rhône.

IMG_7588.JPG

IMG_7602.JPG

As someone who grew up in the city, I'm obviously familiar with the work known as the 'Mur des Lyonnais', a life-size fresco painted on the entire back of a building, depicting on a human scale the various famous people who were born there and have left their mark on the city's history.

IMG_7603.JPG

IMG_7605.JPG

Here's the precise list of characters, and I'm sure you'll be able to find a few celebrities you know ! Or maybe not ^^

IMG_7592.JPG

IMG_7593.JPG

IMG_7594.JPG

IMG_7595.JPG

IMG_7597.JPG

IMG_7598.JPG

IMG_7591.JPG

Here are a few closer details of this incredible fresco, and you may have noticed the importance of food with the restaurant fronts. In fact, Lyon is the undisputed capital of gastronomy in France, and there are many excellent restaurants that have been established there for a very long time !

The Abbé Pierre, the great resistance fighter and founder of the "Compagnons d'Emmaüs", and the Lumière Brothers, the inventors of cinema, can be seen in the balcony on the right !

I'll leave you to look for the other figures represented here and without waiting, I'll get back on the road for the end of this walk.

IMG_7607.JPG

Here we are on the other side of the footbridge, facing Fourvière hill and St Paul's church.

IMG_7405.JPG

At the very top of this wooded hill, you can see a radio tower, and I'm not lying to you, this one is also an Eiffel Tower, since it was built by the same famous engineer.

IMG_7406.JPG

IMG_7408.JPG

This is the church of St Paul, which gives its name to the district. On this side of the Saône, you have three districts named after their churches, St Paul, St Jean and St George. Yes, historically, Lyon is a very Catholic city !

IMG_7414.JPG

IMG_7415.JPG

IMG_7418.JPG

Here are a few more images of the quays while I'm back at the site of my mission. I'll never tire of observing these facades as they play with the light throughout the day, and I'm delighted to be able to share a little of Lyon's atmosphere with you !

I hope you've enjoyed this visit and thank you for your time. Don't hesitate to react in the comments, even if I'm always a bit slow to react myself ^^ !

Have a great day everyone and see you soon,

<3

<3

I love the historical buildings in France, I can really call them living history. My girlfriend has been to Paris before and she showed me photos from there and you are sharing them with us here, man. They look amazing!

Looks like an interesting place. Even though I'm not a "city guy' at all, I still can appreciate all those nic colours as well as the details of that amazing fresco.

Thanks a lot for taking us with you to your teenage home town. Enjoyed being (virtually) at your side!

Have a lovely weekend and all the best for your project in Lyon.
