And here's the "Last" Tree Planted in the Orchard !

avatar

Hi dear Hivers, how are you doing today ? Here's a little update from the garden, which is starting to cool down a bit and is still a pleasure to work in, but a pleasure that requires a little more preparation in the face of sub-zero temperatures.

The pictures might lead you to believe that it would be around twenty degrees, but it's not and that's it, winter is well and truly here and the last trees are losing their last leaves...

DSC_1465.JPG

Above is a general view of the orchard, the widest I can get with my 35mm lens. To make out the trees, you have to squint a bit or simply zoom in. Whatever the case, they're all there and there are now 12 of them.

DSC_1471.JPG

Remember that our objective was (and still is) to plant between 15 and 25 trees this year. I think we'll be more in the region of 20 by early spring. After my recent fall, I've had to take it easy for a while, but it's only going to get better again !

We couldn't go a few days without planting even one tree, so here's the latest. It's a persimmon tree, a fairly hardy species that comes from China and can withstand temperatures as low as -18 degrees !

DSC_1476.JPG

DSC_1497.JPG

Here it is, proudly at the top of the hill, waiting to be planted in the area that I think will give it the most sun and the most comfort.

Indeed, the persimmon tree needs a lot of sun, and the choice of this area for the orchard was not made at random. Quite simply, the sun shines from sunrise to sunset, i.e. from 8 to 20 hours every day.

DSC_1499.JPG

But here comes the oak tree next door, playing in the gusts of wind and sowing its last leaves in our direction.

As well as contemplating this, we'll never say no to a little more organic matter for our young shoots !

DSC_1515.JPG

Here's the foliage of this persimmon tree against the winter sky... But without further ado, let's get down to the business of planting !

DSC_1892.JPG

DSC_1893.JPG

As always, we use the spading fork to mark out and remove the grass in the area of the future tree.

DSC_1902.JPG

DSC_1911.JPG

DSC_1919.JPG

Then we use the clumps of grass we've removed to make a trough to hold the watering and simply start digging a hole.

For me, it's always religious, or at least eminently ritualistic and meaningful. We open a breach in the earth's crust to close it again with something external, something that wasn't there before and that will remain there from now on, perhaps for hundreds of years !

DSC_1926.JPG

Oops, I went a bit fast there and didn't take any photos of the intermediate stages, the tree is already in the ground and its leaf mulch is already in place too !

DSC_1937.JPG

And here it is, standing back a little, with the oak, at least a century old, as its protective guardian in the background... Two more watering cans and it's ready to acclimatize to its new landscape !

DSC_1940.JPG

The day's work is completed by distributing the organic matter in the form of leaves raked lower down in front of the house.

No jostling, every tree gets its share !

That's it for this newcomer, and if I was able to take so many pictures, it's because I wasn't the one digging because of my back! And yes, despite the somewhat misleading title, this tree won't be the last to join our orchard. Rather, it will be the last of the first session... until the next one !

I hope you've enjoyed this article and the images that illustrate it, and I'd like to thank you for taking the time to visit. Don't hesitate to leave your comments and advice, and I hope you have a lovely Sunday,

Gardening is tiring no matter what. I hope this time next year when you watch your trees grow, you'll feel like your hard work has paid off, man.

No jostling, every tree gets its share !

I think the trees will be kind and won't fight XD

In fact, a raisonnable activity is good, sitting too long is quite painful. Different doctors I've seen all told me that walking at a middle pace is excellent !

I hope the persimmon tree will bring tasty fruits 😇

Yeeees ! Now we have to wait and water it hehe 😅

Have a lovely new week ahead dear @mipiano 😘

Ahh ! I love those !

I recently learn that there are two types of persimons, the ones that stay hard and the others that get ripes... I wonder which one is this one 🤔 :)

Have a lovely day @mipiano 😘

So, I've check a bit an this one seems to be from the first type, the "kaki-pomme" - kaki apple as we say in French :)

I hope you'll come across the soft ones, those are my favorite too 😇

Have a lovely Sunday 😘

I envy you still don't have snow yet in France! Here in Germany, everything is covered by snow. I look forward to reading further development of your orchard. I want to have my own in the near future :)

Have a nice Sunday!

Yeah, I imagine that its quite perturbing and beautiful at the same time ! Here in Normandy, there's not so many snow, more icy mornings !

Many thanks dear @akipponn ! I believe that planting trees is a true act toward our resilience in the future !

I hope you and your family are doing well ❤️

Hello long life to your new tree, I hadn't given any thought to breaking ground and planting something in that space that nature itself hadn't put there for many years.

It was a pleasure to read your post and the pictures are beautiful, may it recover soon from its fall.
