Follow Friday: Hope in sight?

We are in the final rundown to Hardfork 21. Our posts now will pay out under the new algorithm. That will mean less author rewards and more for curators. Most of us are not sure whether we will be worse off, but it does not look great for small accounts. We know Steem as a platform is not in a great place. After over three years it ought to be a lot bigger, but people have been put off by the complexity and others have left due to intimidation or lack of results. They can see greedy people just going for short term gains when some of us want to build a platform with a future as it has so much potential.

The Steem coin has shown some improvement over the last day or so, so maybe speculators think things will improve. We need them to invest into Steem and power it up. They can earn twice as much as before just by voting.

Steem
Prices from @coingecko.

Some people have expressed their frustration. @arseniclullaby thinks Steemit could make better use of featured posts. At least he is still around and sharing his comics with us. It just seems a shame that his hard work earns about a dollar whilst someone says 'yay crypto!' can make much more. This platform has to be about much more than just crypto if we want it to grow to many millions of users.

My own votes are targeted at posts I think help make Steem more attractive. That may harm my short-term curation earnings, but I think we have to decide if we want to help the platform and not just ourselves. If Steem grows then the coin could be worth a lot more and then we all benefit.

HF21 also brings 'free' downvotes. I would hope some of the big accounts will make use of this to deal with those who abuse the platform. I will continue working with @SteemFlagRewards to target those. A prime example is @crystalliu who churns out dozens of junk posts each day and is still buying votes. That ought to be less profitable now, but he does not seem bright enough to notice.

I will suggest some more creative people I think you should consider supporting. If we can build a good community of creative artists, writers, musicians and photographers they will tell others. Maybe more of them should be using Creative Coin as that has a better signal to noise ration.

I can create Steem accounts if you know anyone who needs one and does not want to wait. I will delegate to people who can show they have something that will benefit Steem. @TenKMinnows will also support them with votes.

HF21 is a change, but maybe it is an opportunity for a better Steem. Ultimately it is up to us the users where it goes.

Please add your own suggestions of cool people in the comments or make a #FollowFriday post.

I will be at the London Meetup organised by @redrica next week if anyone wants to chat to Steemians in person.

Steem on!

Thanks for the mention here and I appreciate the support you and others have given to me for my posts.

I will be buying some steem in the next couple of days/weeks I think to load up my SP and make the most of the curation as well because I'm pretty active on here. I don't know if I'm over the threshold where delegating to ocd is less profitable yet so some testing needs to be done on that front.

Either way, exciting times 🙂

Use your extra Steem well. There are plenty of musicians to support. It's a shame the open mic contest has stopped, but others are trying to set up alternatives.

Our posts now will pay out under the new algorithm. That will mean less author rewards and more for curators

When I first started on steemitin July 2017, I was all about connecting, commenting and carrying on conversations. I'll be the first to admit over the last two years, life has been crazy busy and hectic so I have been slack on the commenting. I do like that curation rewards will potentially rise; which makes me want to get back to how I was once a time ago on the platform.
There were times when my comments on someone else's post earned ten times the amount of my actual post!

But back to the curator rewards...
I have ALWAYS been a manual curator- never used a bid-bot, never will. I like to read... and there are some GREAT authors and posters on steemit who literally put 100% into their posts and take the blogging aspects seriously. Those are the people who should be rewarded. For their dedication, determination and un-relentless communication.

EDIT
I had to add after re-reading your post. I LOVE the follow Friday tag! I may have to do that! I used to do curation posts... but slowly (and sadly) stopped about 6 months ago.

For what most of us make it has to be fun too. I saw the potential from the start and I'm happy to help others as I'm not desperate to make money.

When I started on steemit, it was my portal and release to write again. But that has changed to a place I can help (as I'm a stay-at-home wife) and add to our retirement years.

Of course it can, but what will make that happen?

I hope steem will be huge in the future and that there rewards will be much better. It would motivate people to keep on creating interesting posts and put more effort in it.

That is my hope too. It is great that you have stuck with it and I hope that pays off. The potential is there if people will try to make it happen.

I hope too didn't expect the steem price would go so low after I joined. I'm only a bit afraid that after the update the rewards will be even lower for me and other content creators when I look at what will change...

I would hope you will still make something and that is why I am trying to encourage more genuine curation. Those voting can make a good return on it, so they should support good content.

This platform has to be about much more than just crypto if we want it to grow to many millions of users.

I think communities are the answer. The great thing about them is also that the custom tokens - that many of them use - also decentralize earnings. In a specific community you can nowadays earn more tokens than STEEM dollar-wise, so the small cut (in Steem payouts) some authors might have in this Hard Fork isn't as tragic as many make it out to be :)

Exciting times - I'm having the feeling that cultural shift is really coming and people will start cleaning up Trending - I will be, at least, to discourage bid bot use, albeit I have tiny vote.

I agree that communities have great potential. I have been waiting for them for a long time. People want to gather around common interests and Steem could be a good platform for that.

I'm sure I will earn much less under the new hardfork. I'm a small account with little Steem Power to speak of.

So be it. Why waste time complaining about it when I should be working 2 or 3 or 10 times as hard to create new and better content, When I should be reinvesting the steem I do earn back into my account and exploring the massive Steem world for new opportunities.

You can still make more on Steem than elsewhere. It will be interesting to see if whales will be willing to downvote crap posts to free up more rewards for the rest of us. Otherwise more people will leave.

It seem the whales have a responsibility to use their influence for the good of the community that supports them. at least I would hope it works out that way.

I think we've learned a lot and especially gained some really smart heads, who now know the system and also its flaws.
Maybe it's finally time for real proof-of-brain? ;)

That is what I hope for. You can play this game for profit, but most of us will not make much. Might as well try to make it do some good. I barely make beer money here these days, but I want to see Steem succeed and will keep helping small accounts even whilst annoying people try to put me off. Seems I really pissed someone off, but they are irrelevant.

In steem I see great potential becoming a tool for censorship-resistant exchange of knowledge and also decentralized organisation of people.

We, on the earth, really need such a tool.
