Market Friday - Barbados, Lesser Antilles in the West Indies

Fasten your seat belt, we are about to take off! We are headed to Barbados. Barbados is located in the Lesser Antilles of the West Indies, the Southeast part of the Caribbean Sea, to be exact. A direct flight from Washington, DC to the island of Barbados is always a good idea, taking only minutes over 5 hours of flight time and if you plan ahead, costs about $240.00- $425.00, I paid less than $300.0 for a round trip ticket directly into the only airport there, Grantley Adams International Airport, also one of the major hub airports in the Caribbean. If an airline doesn't fly into one of the islands you are going to, chances are you will connect with Barbados and swap to a puddle jumper to get there.*

Breathe it all in. The palm trees were swaying in the breeze, warm and inviting. I have heard there is pink sand on one of the beaches and I look over in the direction of the water to see if that is it. It is not, but, it still draws me closer and I know I have to make my way down there to check it out. Like all the beaches in Barbados, they are public, as they should be.

The former Caribbean colony declared its independence from the United Kingdom on November 30, 1966, but retained Elizabeth II as its ceremonial head of state until November 30, 2021. By removing the queen from her position, the democratic nation of 300,000 people has finally cast off one of the last institutionalized vestiges of British colonialism, officially becoming the world’s newest republic. Barbados remains part of the Commonwealth of Nations, a voluntary organization of 54 former British colonies that the queen has sought to uphold throughout her reign. The Government of Barbados (GoB), is a unitary parliamentary constitutional republic, where the President of Barbados represents as the head of state and the Prime Minister of Barbados represents as the head of government. source

Here is a map of the Eastern Caribbean. I cannot post it as it is Copywrite protected, but, I can send you there! I am curious about where things are located. You can find it here

I get a better view from the top of the hill and recognize one of my favorite places, Bathsheba Beach. It is not your typical beach with people sunning and swimming, most come to tame the powerful waves. I see a lot of surfboards out today, but for me, it is its rock formations that look like mushrooms. The Atlantic Ocean has worn away the rock, leaving them in this very distinctive shape.

It is hard to talk about Barbados without mentioning the fact that it is considered the birthplace of rum. There are records showing that it was first mentioned in 1650. The Mount Gay Distillery was founded in 1703 and boasts of producing the oldest rum in the world. Don't miss out on the tour of the Distillery - you are plied with free samples, just so you will know what you are missing. Until 1667, it was called rumbullion until it was shortened to rum.

I was getting all nostalgic about the delicious rum they have and forgot to point out that this is the town of Bathsheba, which is a fishing village on the East Coast of Barbados. It might surprise you to know that Barbados has parishes, and the island is divided up into eleven parishes. If you don't know what a parish is, it is similar to a state or province. Bathsheba is in the parish of Saint Joseph.

IMG_7102 mf.JPG

Although Barbados had the lowest poverty rate since 2007, it is still significant at 14%. Lack of financial support from children's fathers creates a low-income count in the household. It is a cycle the country is working on breaking. Weak tourism will push it down further, but, I didn't have figures to take that into account. I am sure the numbers are scary. As I say this, I have to admit, the people are what makes these visits to the Caribbean so peaceful, meaningful, and refreshing.

Bathsheba Beach is such a unique piece of beauty. If you read any literature about this part of Barbados, they describe it as the rugged, exciting east coast. The waves are thundering and rough, yet, if I walk over where the palms are on the edges, there are pools of water to swim in. Mother Nature knows just how to do it.

IMG_7020 mf.JPG

There are hammocks swinging between some of the palms, shading you from reality. I look around and wonder if I would love it this much if I lived here, the sound of the ocean day in and day out. Oh, yes. Breathe deeply.

IMG_7081 MF.JPG

Locals surf here in these waters, the waves are magnificent! The international competition happens every year, except for the last two, but, I expect that most things will open up soon. We can all hope, yes? The kids that were surfing here called this Bathsheba Rock, I don't actually know if it has a real name.

IMG_7064 MF.JPG

The most popular beaches for tourists are on the western and southern sides of the island. The pink sand on one, sugary white sand on the rest. They have some of the most famous resorts here, with a roll call of celebrities that is staggering. Yes, it is this side of the island I actually prefer. There are plenty of places with white beaches, but, how many have mushroom rocks and locals throwing nets out into the sea to get fresh seafood?

IMG_7082 MF.JPG

I stopped by a roadside market for some fruit and vegetables. It was just picked at her house. I cannot get it any fresher than that if I picked it myself. The prices were lower when I was there last, but, here is what they are today. The fruit was good and tasted delicious. Quick Conversion: How much is a Bajan dollar to a US dollar? 1 Barbadian or Bajan Dollar = $0.50 US Dollar. So just divide these prices by two.

Eggs (regular) (12) 9.41 Bds$
Local Cheese (1 lb) 26.57 Bds$
Apples (1 lb) 2.53 Bds$
Banana (1 lb) 2.37 Bds$
Oranges (1 lb) 3.07 Bds$
Tomato (1 lb) 2.86 Bds$
Potato (1 lb) 2.66 Bds$
Onion (1 lb) 2.92 Bds$
Lettuce (1 head) 4.97 Bds$

IMG_7093 mf.JPG

The Green Monkey is a resident of Barbados. Him and his 14,000 plus relatives. The babies are bluish in color, while mature monkeys have brown/grey coloring with specks of yellow and olive green, much like the one pictured here. I watched a local man walk to the edge of a neighborhood and make ungodly noises, and minutes later, monkeys came streaming down the trees. I think he must do it for tourists as they didn't delay and he gave them bananas for a reward.

IMG_7011 MF.JPG

Barbados is such a lovely island, the people, the food, the climate. I didn't get to show it all to you, but, there is always another week, There is always too much to show off and I never know when to stop. I want to thank you for coming with me and I hope you enjoyed it as much as I love showing it off. I think it doesn't translate as well but, I can imagine very well and I hope you can too.

As always, there must be flowers to color my world. #alwaysaflower The hellebores are some of my favorite springtime blooms. They are sometimes called Lenten, Christmas, or Winter rose. There are 17 different varieties and they are native to Turkey and Greece. Hellebores flowers hang upside-down. Still, they color a beautiful picture. Do you have hellebores where you live?

IMG_7057 MF.JPG

It looks like a mushroom to me, these large boulders that are on the waters' edge? Part of a coral reef that has disintegrated over time not by the battering of waves, "but rather by the feeding action of invertebrates scraping algae from the rock, a reminder that geological processes both large and small are constantly at work."

The people doing V2K with remote neural monitoring want me to believe this lady @battleaxe is an operator. She is involved deeply with her group and @fyrstikken . Her discord is Battleaxe#1003. I cant prove she is the one directly doing the V2K and RNM. Doing it requires more than one person at the least. It cant be done alone. She cant prove she is not one of the ones doing it. I was drugged in my home covertly, it ended badly. They have tried to kill me and are still trying to kill me. I bet nobody does anything at all. Ask @battleaxe to prove it. I bet she wont. They want me to believe the V2K and RNM in me is being broadcast from her location. And what the fuck is "HOMELAND SECURITY" doing about this shit? I think stumbling over their own dicks maybe? Just like they did and are doing with the Havana Syndrome https://ecency.com/fyrstikken/@fairandbalanced/i-am-the-only-motherfucker-on-the-internet-pointing-to-a-direct-source-for-voice-to-skull-electronic-terrorism

Weak tourism will push it down further, but, I didn't have figures to take that into account.

Wikipedia says that "While it is technically an Atlantic island, Barbados is closely associated with the Caribbean and is ranked as one of its leading tourist destinations".

I do not know if this is true or not.

Well, it was, before Covid, that is what I meant by it will push it down. It is technically, but, not considered an Atlantic Island. It is part of the Lesser Antilles, which is in the Caribbean.

Good morning to you!

Denise, I got it! You missed your vacation and your trip. Lately, only travel posts in your market. Perfectly justified, the longing and wanderlust burn bad, almost physically.
Now we're visiting Barbados! Exotic land and far too far away for most of us, thanks for taking us from with you to Bathsheba Beach. Very beautiful indeed but couldn't be otherwise, I know what good taste you have.

While you're making your Friday posts more and more subtle, I'm going back to basics and the much-touted Universal Stores. She Will Come, She Will Definitely Come!

You are right! I just looked back and the last five out of six were travel posts! Of course, there is money spent there, but, in a less evident way. I think I need to change my venue up a little!

Do I miss travel? I think we all do, maybe it is the lack of freedom that is more painful. Although, it has enhanced other things, more time spent home doing things that need to be done... not nearly as exciting. :))

Bathsheba is a small fishing village with about 5,000 people. Life is simple, the people are happy and their smiles welcoming. There is no doubt in my mind that where there is less money, there is less worry about what to do with it, leaning into the happiness is free. Of course, there is that balance. You need some, otherwise, you will starve or freeze to death (although not there) but, too much and people get jaded.

I love posts that bring me back to the basics!! Isn't how this all started? Thanks for stopping by and leaving your words and dropping your post!

Have a great day!

It's nice at home too, I see you like it and I must say I like it a lot too. Still, a trip! Away from home often means away from certain worries and obligations.

Bathsheba Beach is such a unique piece of beauty.

I absolutely agree! These pictures of the beach are just so divine. Would love to visit such lovely place. I'm sure you had a beautiful time there. Your post on Barbados is enlightening as I learned the country is recently the world’s newest republic.

Did you visit one or two distilleries? Would love to see how rum is produced, what makes them so delicious and of course, so they could ply me with free samples of it! 😄

Thanks for sharing this interesting post. Happy Friday! I hope you are doing great. Wish you a lovely weekend. !PIZZA !LUV

I did visit the distilleries. It didn't allow you to take pictures, but, I am sure that one of them will. I took some in Puerto Rico at the Bacardi Distillery. On second thought, only in one spot. Things might have changed. Oh, they do ply you with samples! Almost all the Caribbean Islands give free samples of whatever their specialty is. No wonder people love visiting! :)

Thanks for stopping by! It is always nice to hear from you! Have an amazing day!

Thanks so much for your support, always. It is much appreciated. It was a great visit and I like focusing on different parts of the island each time I have been there.

I really love the pink sand, but, it sounds a little gross when you find out why it is pink. The closer place with nice pink beaches that I soooo love is Bermuda. The other beaches are sugar white there too. A nice reprieve from the winter blahs... most can telecommute from there. Oh, those were the days...

Thanks for stopping by! It is always great to see you!

I feel the same way, JJ! @tattoodjay I have so many missed opportunities that felt justified at the time. Hindsight is always a wonderful thing though. I think that there isn't a place in the world that I would pass up, given the chance today.

Do those colleagues still live in Barbados or have they moved on to bigger spaces? I have lost some people along the way, but, once in a while, one pops up on the radar that I haven't seen nor heard from in forever.

We have a rock like that over near where I live. It is on Lake Huron in the Saginaw Bay area. They call it turnip rock. Tons of people kayak around it and stuff. I have never been to it, but I have seen pictures of it. This looks like a really beautiful place! Thanks for sharing the photos and all of the great info!

Haha! Turnip rock! How cool!! I just googled it and cannot believe it! I want to go there now! You need to go there! Anyone who wants to see this, it is here I have never even heard of it. How can that be? Nothing this awesome should pass by without noticing it! It is a beautiful place, but, now I have to see how far this turnip rock is from me. Thanks so much for the tip! :) And for stopping by!

We pass near it every Spring when we got to Caseville to camp, but we have never stopped. We have been wanting to buy kayaks for a while now, so maybe one day we will finally get them and make the paddle to see it!

I looked into it a little more and it looks like it is a 4 hour round trip. I would have to work my way up to that. Apparently the rock is on private property so the only way you can access it is via kayak.

Ah, yes. The man could turn it into a little business if he were smart. :) Four-hour round trip isn't too bad, my Shore House is that much and so I do it on a regular basis. Four hours there, mow the three acres and four hours back. However, two hours and paddling? I don't want to drive back then. I hear you.

The other side of the island is where most people go. This is where the local fishing village is and so life is much more humble. The other side has white sand beaches, even a pink sand one, and lots of resorts and high-end places to eat.

This is what I choose when I come, although I have been to the other. The people are as lovely as the natural beauty found here. I hope your husband does get to go. It is a memorable vacation.

You know how diverse the Caribbean is, in 22 miles of this country, it has so many more faces than most places 20 times their size. It is one of those places that everybody hears about, but, it is even better than that. I was so happy to see them pull the plug on its independence. It has come a long way!

Thanks so much for stopping by and leaving your words. I truly appreciate it. Have a great day!

I love off the beaten path. I have spas at home, even ones with beaches. So for me, personally, it is all about the people, the culture, the food, fauna... and the amazing nature it offers.

I am so wrecked by our world right now, Joan. My heart goes to those people who probably think nobody else cares. God Bless them all. Hopefully, that will right itself. ❤️ Thank you so much for stopping by and leaving your words. I hope you have a peaceful evening.

I had to chuckle a little when I read the part where you said to breathe deeply.. Not with that sorghum lying there on the beach! lol. I really hate that stuff. Not only does it stink like sulfur when it begins to rot in the hot sun, it's scratchy on the skin when you swim through it. I think all of the islands, Florida, Mexico and others deal with that crap. grrrr.

Looks beautiful though. My wife and I would love to take a trip this year, but not sure we can leave Molly right now. We were considering Cancun area again or back to Negril Jamaica. But now that you show me these lovely photos, I am reconsidering! 😁

Hehe... I know what you are talking about, but, it didn't smell at all. Now, this year is a little different for Barbados. But it is in very few spots.

Residents across Barbados should expect to see a heavy presence of sargassum seaweed on beaches across the island this year. Minister of Maritime Affairs and the Blue Economy, Kirk Humphrey, stated this during a recent site visit to River Bay, St Lucy, where the seaweed is creating discomfort for residents.

Anyway, that is a little funny when you think of it.

You may be able to go later in the year. I have to admit, I won't go to Cancun anymore or Jamaica unless you just go to the resorts. Seems the crime along the Mexican coast is rampant right now, two years, and few tourists have not been kind. Jamaica has more and more crime. But, again, the resorts in Negril are wonderful.

Are you signed up with the S.T.E.P. program with the State Department? It is worth looking at if you travel much.

Thanks so much for stopping by and leaving your words. I hope Molly is having a good day! ❤️

Thank you so much. The first shot is up in the mountains looking down, always such a beautiful scene to look at. The last one, of course, is one of the big mushroom rocks on the edge of the water. It is really beautiful there and I am always happy to share with my challenge some of the things I do and places I go.

Thank you so much for your words and for taking the time to drop the link! Have a wonderful day!

I never cease to be amazed by the beauty of these islands and picturesque cheerful houses!!! The name of this town is a bit like the name of the city where we live now 😃 monkeys have a very well-fed look 😁 prices for vegetables and fruits are very low for us. the rocks on the shore are amazingly shaped! No, I have never seen such flowers here 😮 very unusual!

Aren't those monkeys a little chunky? They are better fed than I am! I do love these little islands. They are so peaceful and the palm trees gently wave to you as you walk by.

The prices were very low and they are high right now!!! They were even cheaper when I was there, these are today's prices. The flowers are some of my favorites. Sometimes, they are called Christmas Roses because they bloom in the winter. :))(some of them, others, in the spring)

Thank you so much for stopping by and leaving your words and dropping the link. I hope you have a most wonderful day!

I'm afraid that in view of the ongoing events, prices may rise even more. for us it is inexpensive but for the people who live there it is probably expensive

I totally agree with that! It was cheaper than that when I was there and still, not cheap for them.

Wow ! that cover photo is so spectacular. Captivating! there is a rare feeling in me of emotion, longing and melancholy every time I see those posts with those beautiful beaches and those intense blues and greens. Yesterday I dreamed of the sea again. You know, the sea is a very recurrent element in my dreams. I guess it happens because I miss it so much.
I am learning that Barbados is considered the birthplace of rum. I guess it must be very good and there must be great cane fields on the island. That sea looks pretty rough and it is understandable because it is open sea, that is why it is very good for surfers. I can still imagine myself lying in a hammock underneath those palm trees, feeling and listening to the wind and smelling the sea. Thank you for transporting us to these beautiful places.
Are monkeys everywhere in the island? do people have their as pet in their houses?

It is such a pretty little island and I was on the lesser side of the island. Most people prefer the side of white sands, peaceful water, and even one of the beaches with pink sand. I really like this side in the middle of it all.

Barbados has two main coasts, the calm Caribbean with its white sands and turquoise waters, and the Atlantic which has rugged shores and world-class waves, hence the surfers along with international competition. Bathsheba is on the Atlantic side, so the water is rougher and not recommended for swimming. That is why the water is so rough.

There used to be natural forests in precolonial times, and they cleared them to plant sugar cane. When much of that business went away, the land into brown, scrubby brush. There are 1,500 small farms spread over all of Barbados which produce 60,000 tons of sugar annually.

The island is only 22 miles long and 15 miles wide, so 14,000 monkeys mean they are probably everywhere. I haven't seen anyone with one as a pet. I am not sure, but, I am guessing it would not be a popular pet. The monkey in the picture was sitting on a wooden structure as I was walking by. He scattered when I got closer. I zoomed in here. I wasn't that close. :)

It is a very nice place and I think the people are a huge part of that. Without kind and thoughtful people that make you feel right at home, I am not sure it would be as nice.

There is a much prettier side of the island! Can you believe that?

Thanks for stopping by and leaving your words, and dropping your link! Much appreciated! Have a great day!

Barbados is a beautiful little island nation, for sure. It has only been a new republic since December, it escaped many views.

It is such a unique place, and just think, this was the lesser side of the island, the natural beauty, with the white sand and pink sand beaches are on the other side. I love the people in the small fishing village, warm and inviting... it makes you never want to leave.

The mushroom boulders are so cool aren'they? Thanks so much for your words and for dropping your link!

What a fabulously must go destination Denise during your winter and I am very sad to say I have not visited yet.😊 Now that the world is opening up it will have to be one of my to do travel adventures. Thank you for the tour.
I am said to say that I have not visited Market Friday for a little while but so glad dropped in this week. Some weeks I have not been anywhere of any great interest but that is pretty weak isn't it?
Much love from me at the Sunshine Coast.

Thank you! No worries, my friend! I have been using what I have for two years now. I never use shopping anymore, because I don't go shopping! I have to say that I have been so busy, I go nowhere here on the blockchain practically, just answering my own comments. How pathetic is that?
Market Friday is one of those challenges where it would almost be impossible to be in every week, it is challenging to come up with new things - ask me, I have been doing it for five years! :) I change direction and zig and zag. :)

I adore you, my sunshine. Thank you for your words and for dropping the link!

Hahaha, you a joy, a ray of sunshine Denise. Part of me wishes we could chat over a coffee or a cool glass of wine. I am so glad to hear I am not the only little blogger who does not venture into new places these days. And yep, thanks for the very opportune reminder that old stuff can be creatively used.
I have missed your happy you can do it messages.
Sending you a ray of sunshine from my warm sun filled Sunshine Beach 🌝

So beautiful, @dswigle!!!
Roadside markets are always interesting. Are the prices competitive?
It looks like you were going to prepare a salad. Yum!
Barbados is truly such a lovely island!

I listed the prices of everything in the post. The price in Barbadian Dollars divided by two is equal to one dollar. I would say they are inexpensive for what I have at home.

I did prepare a salad. I stayed on the West side of the island, far and away from the resorts. It is less exotic, there is more poverty, but, I say you get a better picture of the culture in this fishing village of Bathsheba. It is a lovely place and the people are simply delightful!

Nothing like experiencing the place like the locals.
And nothing like genuine hospitality and smiles!
I miss that.
Even at Mass, I find that some people are such in a hurry, they don't look at you
(maybe they are shy or something), purposedly avoiding your gaze, is how I feel sometimes.
I want to make friends with young people, you know... high school girls.
Maybe form a club or something.
