Verona City Center / Road Trip Through Italy

And the day has arrived :( It had to happen someday. It's been a while since we got back from that trip, but with the time it takes to publish each article, we're forced to relive everything we saw and felt. With this article and Verona in the background, we finish our road trip through Italy. This visual record doesn't focus on a specific point on the map, but a kind of compilation resulting from our passage through there, now in a somewhat strange state where the body is already tired and the head still wants to continue. After several articles dedicated to the most emblematic places in the cities we passed through, this one is different.

E o dia chegou :( um dia teria de chegar. Já faz tempo que regressámos desta viagem, mas com o tempo que leva a publicar cada um dos artigos, somos obrigados a reviver tudo o que vimos e sentimos. Com este artigo e com Verona no plano de fundo, terminámos a road trip por Itália. Este registo visual não aborda um ponto específico do mapa, mas uma espécie de compilação resultante da nossa passagem por ali, agora num estado meio estranho em que o corpo já está cansado e a cabeça ainda quer continuar. Depois de vários artigos dedicados aos locais mais emblemáticos das cidades por onde passámos, este é diferente. Não fala de uma praça, de uma igreja ou de um monumento em particular. Fala de tudo isso junto. Fala de uma coleção de momentos captados em fotografias espalhadas por Verona, local onde tudo termina.

While reviewing the photos, I notice something curious: many of them aren't perfect; on the contrary, some are slightly crooked, others have people passing in front, unexpected shadows, or very strong lights. And that's a good thing, because traveling, especially on a road trip, isn't about creating a flawless catalog, it's about recording what really happened. The photos end up being small anchors of memory, serving to trigger that recollection. I look at an ordinary street in Verona and remember The pleasant warmth, the distant sounds of the city—that's worth more than any postcard.

Enquanto revejo as fotos, percebo uma coisa curiosa, que muitas delas não são perfeitas, pelo contrário, algumas estão ligeiramente tortas, outras têm pessoas a passar à frente, sombras inesperadas ou luzes demasiado fortes. E ainda bem, porque viajar, especialmente numa road trip, não é sobre criar um catálogo impecável, é sobre registar aquilo que realmente aconteceu. As fotos acabam por ser pequenas âncoras da memória, que servem para espoletar aquela lembrança. Olho para uma rua banal de Verona e lembro-me do calor agradável, do som distante da cidade, e isso vale mais do que qualquer postal.

Taking a road trip through Italy has a liberating quality that's hard to explain to those who have never done it. The freedom to decide where to stop, how long to stay, when to move on. There are no rigid schedules, no constant anxiety about having to be in a certain place at a certain time. Some days the plan changes completely just because we decide to take a detour to see something, and suddenly you've spent the whole afternoon there. For me, that's one of the greatest riches of this type of trip.

Fazer uma road trip por Itália tem algo de libertador que é difícil explicar a quem nunca o fez. A liberdade de decidir onde parar, quanto tempo ficar, quando seguir em frente. Não há horários rígidos, não há aquela ansiedade constante de ter de estar num determinado sítio numa determinada hora. Há dias em que o plano muda completamente só porque decidimos fazer um desvio para ver algo, e de repente passaste ali a tarde inteira. Isso para mim é uma das maiores riquezas deste tipo de viagem.

Another positive point is the real connection with the places when we choose this type of travel, where you truly feel the transition from one place to another, with the landscapes changing slowly, the accents subtly shifting, the architecture transforming without warning. It's not like landing at an airport and waking up in another reality; it's a continuous process. Italy is perfect for this, with hills giving way to plains, chaotic cities that, a few kilometers away, transform into tranquil villages. All of this is recorded not only in photos but in memory.

Outro ponto positivo é a ligação real aos lugares quando escolhemos este tipo de deslocação em que se sente verdadeiramente a transição de um local para outro, com as paisagens a mudar devagar, os sotaques alteram-se subtilmente, a arquitetura transforma-se sem avisar. Não é como aterrar num aeroporto e acordar noutra realidade, é um processo contínuo. Itália é perfeita para isso, com colinas que dão lugar a planícies, cidades caóticas que a poucos quilómetros se transformam em vilas tranquilas. Tudo isso fica gravado não só nas fotos, mas na memória.

And Then there's the practical side, which rarely appears in the more romantic travelogues, but which counts for a lot. A road trip allows you to adapt your budget, avoid overly touristy areas, sleep outside historical centers, discover restaurants where nobody speaks English and the food is absurdly good. Eating better, spending less, and still feeling closer to local life is a hard combination to beat.

E depois há o lado prático, que raramente aparece nos textos mais românticos sobre viagens, mas que conta muito. Uma road trip permite adaptar o orçamento, fugir de zonas demasiado turísticas, dormir fora dos centros históricos, descobrir restaurantes onde ninguém fala inglês e a comida é absurdamente boa. Comer melhor, gastar menos e ainda sentir que estás mais perto da vida local é uma combinação difícil de bater.

Verona appears here as the almost perfect place to end, not because it's a better city than the others—because that distinction will always be merely subjective—but because it has balance. It's beautiful, historic, and vibrant without being chaotic. Reviewing the photos taken around the city—streets, bridges, facades, people sitting in the shade, details I don't even know why I photographed—gives me that good feeling of a mission accomplished. I didn't see everything I wanted, much less do everything I wanted, but it was worth every minute.

Verona surge aqui como o local quase que perfeito para terminar, não por ser melhor cidade dos que as restantes, até porque essa distinção será sempre meramente subjetiva, mas porque tem equilíbrio. É bonita, histórica e viva sem ser caótica. Rever as fotos tiradas pela cidade, ruas, pontes, fachadas, pessoas sentadas à sombra, detalhes que nem sei bem porque fotografei, dá-me aquela sensação boa de missão cumprida. Não vi tudo o que queria e muito menos fiz tudo o que queria, mas valeu cada minuto.

There's also an inevitable reflection when a trip ends, whether it's a 1-week road trip, a 1-month retreat, or simply a weekend getaway, and that reflection falls on the return. Going back to Portugal wasn't something... No, on the contrary, traveling makes us value the return and gives us a different perspective. We come back with new ideas, with a more open mind, with stories to tell, and often with a desire to change small things in our daily lives. They aren't always big decisions, and sometimes it's just learning to take it slower, observe more, and complain less :)

Há também uma reflexão inevitável quando uma viagem termina, seja ela uma road trip de 1 semana, um retiro de 1 mês ou simplesmente uma escapadinha de fim de semana, e essa reflexão recai sobre o regresso. Voltar a Portugal não foi algo negativo, pelo contrário, viajar faz-nos valorizar o regresso e dá-nos uma perspetiva diferente. Voltamos com ideias novas, com a cabeça mais aberta, com histórias para contar, e muitas vezes com vontade de mudar pequenas coisas no dia a dia. Nem sempre são grandes decisões e às vezes é só aprender a ir com mais calma, a observar mais e a reclamar menos :)

This trip through Italy ends here, in Verona, but the photographs prove that it really doesn't end now. It will continue in conversations, in texts, in memories that arise out of nowhere when I see any image. Taking a road trip is exactly that, a collection of experiences that aren't put away in a drawer when you get home.
From here on out, we'll return to our beloved Portugal :)

Esta viagem por Itália termina aqui, em Verona, mas as fotografias provam que ela não acaba realmente agora. Vai continuar nas conversas, nos textos, nas memórias que surgem do nada quando vejo uma imagem qualquer. Fazer uma road trip é isso mesmo, um conjunto de experiências que não se arruma numa gaveta quando se chega a casa.
Daqui para a frente, voltaremos ao nosso querido Portugal :)
