An Early Morning Market in My Town

avatar

This morning I went to a morning market in my town called Dauhwaru market in my town. There are several markets in my town, it's just that this morning I wanted to go there. It's fun to explore different market and I have never been to this market before.

I parked my motor cycle by the road and began walking to the market. I have been told the sellers in the market were already starting at two AM to prepare their merchandise. The peak hours of the market is actually between 5 to 6 AM. I was there at around 7 in the morning. So, the market was about to close any time soon.

The market will be completely closed at 8 AM. By that time, the place where the market is located will turn back into a road. If you look at the photos, you can see that this "market" is actually a road.

Things You Wont Find Anywhere

Most of the Balinese people believe in Balinese Hinduism (which is slightly different from Indian Hindu). A lot of the time of Balinese people is occupied by preparing offerings to the God, deities or anchestors. That's the reason there are many sellers in this market who sell things needed for religious offerings.

There were some sections where I could find some lady sellers who sell young coconut leaves, banana leaves, coconut, flowers, little baskets with flowers on it, and many various kind of offerings. These are the examples of the offerings for sale.

There are offerings which is ready to use, such as the little basket with flowers. There are also materials such as young coconut leaves or flowers for those who want to make their own offerings on their own.

Vegetables, Fruit and Spices

My wife and I went to a vegetables seller and had a look. We did not actually plan on what vegetables to buy, just wing it. Then we decided to buy some bitter gourds for today's menu.

We also have a look at different spices sellers. There many different types of spices like chili, galengal, turmeric, shallot, garlic, pepper, coriander, and many others. I also saw some fruits like banana, papaya, mandarin, mangosteen, pineaple, apple and duku or lanzones. These are in season at the moment so, it is easy to find them.

Inner Part of The Market

I felt quite strange that there were less people in the main area in the market. There were more people, buyers, sellers in the road, but not in the market building located near the road.

We went into the building because we were told by a lady the fish sellers were located in the main building. We walked around there passing many fried food, cakes, prawn crackers and bread sellers.

We only found one fish seller in the market. We checked the fish sold, but decided not to buy any. We were just wondering so we asked, where were the other sellers.

"They already went home. We're closing." The fish seller replied.

But of course, it was almost 8 o'clock, most of the fish sellers have closed their store. Then, we did not buy any fish.

We went back to the road where we parked our motor bike. We had what we needed so it's time go bakc home.

The items for the flower baskets/offerings are unmistakably Bali... :)

What a cool looking market. That sort of thing is forbidden over here, because of the virus situation... 🤭

Thanks for the great article and beautiful photos! 😊
