Starting My Poultry in a Cage

The prices of a full grown chicken has sore higher, last week I had the opportunity of going to a poultry farm with a friend to buy some chicken for the naming ceremony of his baby, it comes at #6,000 apiece, it was on the high side, mine friend had to result to making using of Fish( we Yoruba call it Eja Panla.

WHAT I NEEDED TO PUT IN PLACE

• Poultry Cage (for housing the chicks)
• Feeder
• Water Trough
• Sack (to prevent cold at night)
• Sawdust (to spread in the cage floor)
• Light source (to provide heat) e.t.c
• Boil Starter Feed

I gave it a thought, Christmas is almost here, won't the price of chicken go hinger than what it is at present, so I decided to get some chicks to rear by mine self and by December they woukd have mature enough for the festive period. So yesterday on mine way back from work I met a man hawking two weeks old Boiler chicks, it is one of the major breed of poultry that matures quickly within 3-4 months when feed properly, I bought 5-pieces at #1,500 each.

I went to the Feed Mill and bought some feed suitable for Boiler chicks, Starter Mash it was called, I got a Feeding Trof and a Water Basin, while mine wife help me with the cleaning of the cage.

Once everything is set, I put the chicks into the cage and improvise the use of a sack to help with reducing cold weather for the Chicken at night. The chicks weren't eating well so I out a call to the Seller, he told me it's due to the change in environment and likely the feed I am using is slightly different from wheat they were used to. That they will adjust soon, and true to his word by evening I was almost complaining that they seems to over-eat.

Today I open the cage down so the chicks can stroll around the house and stretch there leg and get some fresh breeze.
Don't come to mine house by December o. I won't will serve you with my chicken by fish, so it's better you go and get your own chicken rear them in anticipation that they will be ready when the festive period sets in.
