Gardening - A new start!

I am back in the garden! This is the first bit of progress that I made. I was actually out there this weekend and did even more work, but I will post about that later.

I have been meaning to post about my progress but kept getting sidetracked... So... Let me try to work through these images and at least you can see where I came from!

The Garden pics!

Raised garden bed before.

This is what it looked like after I had removed the dead and dried Basil plantation that was growing so well here before all the funerals... In hindsight I should have just harvested everything.

Time to start over!

I still have a strong Rosemary plant and some Parsely. Time to start over and get growing again!

The overgrown box for tomatoes.

This box was messy like this but I removed all the weeds and grass and found that there was still some mint plants alive in there.

Sweet Basil

Although I am germinating Basil from seed, I also bought some seedlings to get started.

Basil all planted out.

Besides the sweet Basil grown in the middle, I also got some Mint Basil planted on the left hand side.

The first Onion

I grew this onion from a cutting and then planted it in the garden! I will be repeating this a lot more!

Sweet Basil, Mint Basil and Onion planted!

Another addition is in the trays: Garlic!

Herb garden looking better

Right... now to the subject of Germination!

Germination Pics!

Mugs ready for seeding!

Right I have done this before. Using the mugs that we buy mustard in... cleaned and read to go!

Cups with paper towel.

Paper Towels are added in on the sides...

Glasses filled with toilet paper

Then stuffed with toilet paper to make them tight.

Basil seeds!

Then comes the process of peeling and harvesting the Basil seeds.

Sweet basil germinating

I have a garlic clove rooting in here and the Basil did germinate!

More Sweet basil germinating.

There is another root growing!

Beans sprouting!

I also stuck some beans in here so I can get THAT growing in the garden!

The Onion Project!

Now on to the Onions. In the above section, I did show a grown plant from a cutting out of the Kitchen, but let me start over.

Start with Onions. We are about to cook.

I am about to make some food. I just took these out of the sock back. Easy as that!

Chop the onions. Leave round 2-3cm of the bottoms.

You cut the bottoms off, leaving around 2-3cm of the onion left over.

Onions clean off the brown paper layer.

The brown layer gets removed as this dead layer will be floating in the water and this can start to rot!

Onion with toothpicks

You then stab some toothpicks into the body of the onion. Depending on what sort of container you have, you need to plan how these go in. I just would not spear through the center of the bulb where the living parts are.

Onion with toothpicks

So this is how it starts... nothing going on right?

Toothpicks angle on onions

I angled this one a bit to make sure that the root but in the middle is in the water.

Onion in water.

There we go. In the water. This water needs to be changed every day for the best results!

First Onion roots

After only a day or sometimes 2 days this happens. Roots are starting to grow.

Onion roots starting to grow!

Another day and it is a lot longer.

Onion cutting sprouting roots Day 3

By the third day there is this bush of roots!

The mature onion that is now in the garden.

And if you keep changing the water and looking after it you will get a grown onion plant that you can plant! So we shall make a bunch more of these!

Thank you for reading this blog!

Cheers!

Wow! I never knew that a white onion can be germinated like that. The next that I buy a white onion I am going to cut it like you did and then I am going try in germinating it.
