WFH Debate

I got out of the University 5 years ago and since then, I’ve spent a lot more time working from home than I have working at an office. This isn’t entirely due to my continuous inclination to it but also the fact that there aren’t a lot of great jobs around me.

Working online has always provided me with enough time to explore other desires, be more productive and improve my skills. I gave working at an office a chance for a couple of months within these 5 years but it was exactly as I expected it to be - torture.

Since the pandemic, there has been an on-and-off debate on whether the WFH model is sustainable. A lot of companies were forced to adjust to it and then over-adjust to the point where they can’t seem to think of the perfect way to get everyone back to the offices anymore.

A lot of companies found cheaper and more efficient talent from different parts of the world and created systems where they could work properly. They saved money on office spaces and other random office expenses. However, the debate keeps getting stronger and to a large extent, it makes a lot of sense.

Someone today likened the current WFH trend to the reason behind the loads of mental health disorders people are facing today. As much as these mental health concerns have always existed, they weren’t as bold as they’ve become now and I somehow agree.

While I know that a lot of staff who spend their time working from home actually get the job done, they’re forced to have a lot more free time than they’d usually have. The time spent waiting in traffic is spent drinking coffee. Giving people a lot more time to be unproductive.

I’m a strong believer in the role productivity has to play in maintaining sanity. Once the body and mind have no other form of struggle, they tend to search for things to occupy them. They seek some discomfort and that’s where these problems emanate from.

I believe the best thing to come out of this WFH saga has to be Hybrid work. As a person who has spent most of her time working indoors, I love the idea of having a day or two where I can leave home with a purpose. These days I only get to leave home when I need to get to the gym or pick up groceries.

For a lot of productive minds, working from home has done a lot of good than bad for them. However, not a lot of people want to be productive so the margin doesn’t exactly make it worth it in my opinion.

In the meantime, I’m still making the most of WFH until I can move to a better environment where I can get the Hybrid work I desperately want.
