A Wooden Friend: A 5-Minute Freewrite

Clara is a timid girl who desires to make friends but lacks the courage to approach children her age. Instead, she spent her time viewing television and playing with her wooden doll, Rosa. Rosa was a doll that Clara's grandmother, who passed away two years ago, gave to her. Every time Clara's parents leave for work, she is left alone with the wooden doll.

Without her own companions, Clara could only spend time with Rosa, making the wooden doll extremely valuable to her. Clara would spend a great deal of time with Rosa, sharing her secrets and emotions with the doll. Clara would even occasionally wish that the doll were an actual person.

One day, Clara spoke to the doll again and wished that it were an actual person.

Clara whispered to the wooden doll, "If only you were a real person, then I would have a friend to play and spend time with."
Clara's wish was not sincere, as she was aware that a wooden doll could never become an actual person. But to her surprise, the doll suddenly moved and cheerfully greeted the girl.

"Hello, Clara! It's a pleasure to meet you!" Rosa energetically said.

Clara was stunned to observe Rosa moving and speaking. Even though the wooden doll did not transform into a real person, the fact that it could move and speak on its own was astounding.

“H-hi? Nice to meet you?”

Clara did not know how to respond to the circumstance, but she greeted Rosa with a slight stutter.

Rosa smiled and tenderly grasped Clara's hands, saying, "I've been waiting so long to speak with you. I am pleased to finally have this opportunity."

"How are you moving and speaking?" Clara inquired.

"I'm uncertain myself," the doll responded. "It just occurs. Magic, perhaps? I only know that I won't last long and will shortly return to normal."

Clara was disappointed to learn that Rosa would shortly return to normal. She believed she finally had someone she could call a confidante.

"Do not weep. We would always be together, despite the fact that I can't spend much time with you like this," Rosa explained. “Also, while I'm in this state, I would assist you in making genuine friends.”

“Really? How?” Clara inquired.

"Do you see those kids on the playground? I will assist you in making acquaintances with them. You need only to have faith in me."

"All right, I'll trust you."

And with Rosa's encouragement, Clara walked apprehensively to the playground.
