An Example of Good Architecture
Good Tuesday, tree lovers!
Here's another #treetuesday shot.
While I was walking through the streets of Vila Real, in the Northern district of Portugal, I saw this lovely old house, right next to a large tree. As you can guess by the colour of its leaves, this was taken in the Autumn and Winter was approaching fast.
There are plenty of such houses in this street, but all with different styles. This one was one of the cutest which was still being occupied and maintained.
Sadly, a few of the other houses appeared empty and abandoned. 🤨
I always like to encounter old building like this which are in good shape. I feel that they are a piece of history which deserves to be kept and well preserved.
These old houses will last a lot more than many of the more recent constructions, such as apartment buildings. It seems that, as time moves forward, the materials used to construct in residential areas are weaker and weaker. It makes me feel that some of these engineers haven't read the Three Little Pigs story. That's a mistake that will lead to a lot of problems in the future... but for now, it works. The developers save money and make a huge profit. When the buildings start to rot, they won't be around to see it. 🤔
I hope society starts giving preference to quality over quantity once again, the path we're currently on... is not a good one. We're starting to look like mindless robots building low quality products. 😶

Glad to hear your story @trincowski. However, our facilities or buildings are still far behind. but anyway we still have to enjoy.
I'm sorry to hear that... Over here things were improving until the middle of the XX century. Now it looks we're on a sliding slope with building quality decreasing more and more. 🤨

Real talk, just like few weeks ago 25 story building collapsed completely due to poor materials used.
It was later gathered that the project was initially budgeted for 16 story building but due to greed, the owner changed Contracted Architect and decided to expand it with another.
Up to 7 persons lost their lives, working at the building site during the incident.
Oh no, that's terrible! We had a condo building collapse in Miami, Florida several months ago because they didn't do the necessary maintenance. Meanwhile, in my apartment building in Denver they finally - after decades - realized that the metal beam that was pretty much a speed bump in the garage underneath the building was a structural support beam and that's why every time someone drove over it, the whole building shook. I for years felt the shaking and thought, "Is someone crashing into a pillar in the garage? Is it a heavy truck on the street driving by? What is that?" Nope, it was the whole building being shook because some genius left a support beam exposed.
So they had to have engineers figure it out and it took months of waiting and then construction work to fix it, but it's finally fixed. My mom was freaking out when I told her because it was right after the Miami building fell and she was afraid my building would collapse, too.
That's unreal!!! I'm glad to hear it's fixed now, that sounded very dangerous!

Wow, that is horrible. Things are not that bad over here... but I'm afraid these modern buildings will collapse pretty easy in case of a earthquake. The last big one we had was a few centuries ago, so I guess everyone is feeling over confident and think it won't happen again.

It's very unfortunate, but a new reality. One can even use text book (tried and tested) guidelines to put up a building but because raw materials are of lower quality compared to the past, things don't always work as intended.

Hello, my friend! This is a great #treetuesday post... I could not agree with you more as you talk about "quality of quantity"... We live in a mobile home, and I can tell you they are all about quantity lol. They used to make things that lasted more than a few years. Pride in everything made... but not so much anymore. From your post:
Just as we were agreeing... we are starting to look like robots. Or is it the fact that everything is made by robots? I know technology is a wonderful thing. But if we don't start remembering what's important; craftsmanship, quality materials, and maybe even a decent warranty. Stop relying on others to make what you can make... right? I'm with you. Older buildings generally have more character and are built to last. This is not to say that they are ALL quality, but I'd wager that the ratio of quality/low quality is reversed in relation to modern buildings. That is, old buildings mostly were good quality and built to last, and modern buildings are mostly low quality that will fall apart.
I live in a rapidly gentrifying area, and one day I was walking beside a plumber who was working on my block and we started chatting, and as we passed the brand-new "luxury" apartments, he said "I would never want to live in one of these." I asked him why, and he said the plumbing was all f**ked up! Brand new. "Luxury." But built with problems from the start.

I think that in the past, all constructions and even everyday things were made to last much longer, even today many of those things still work, like that house, for example.
Yep, that's a fact. After all, we still have towers, bridges and aqueducts still standing from the times of the Roman Empire. That was over 1500 years ago. Some of these modern buildings will be lucky if they last 10% or 20% of that! 🤪
