The many volumes of Scott Pilgrim

avatar

I became aware of Scott Pilgrim due to my daughter being a fan. The books and DVD were around the house, so eventually I watched the movie. It is a fun piece of escapism, mixing normal life with fantasy elements. So I thought I would read the books too.

Books

The booked were created by Canadian artist Bryan Lee O'Malley. They are regular paperback size and the actually story is all in black and white. Apparently there are colour editions out there too.

Scott is a slacker in Toronto who is in a band and dating a younger girl and not working. He lives with his gay friend Wallace. His life changes when mysterious delivery girl Ramona Flowers comes into his life. He wants to win her love, but first he has to defeat her 'evil exes'. These battles crop up across the books leading to a confrontation with the enigmatic Gideon.

Comic

The battles are epic conflicts in the style of video games and there are lots of game elements with defeated opponents turning into coins. There are also doorways to other worlds and other impossible things. Some fights involve swords, but nobody remarks much on how unusual this might seem.

Fight

The style is very cartoony and I expect it has some influences from Japanese manga. It varies between talky sequences and the action, which is very dynamic. The scenes with the band are cool. O'Malley is a musician, so he can use his experience to make them realistic.

I think this might be considered a young adult comic, but I think older readers can enjoy it too. I certainly did. It makes a change to read a comic that is not just about superheros.

The movie takes the basic theme and certain scenes from the comic, but misses out a lot. It is fun though and feels like watching a game at times even though it is real people. The action is very much comic style. As is often the case the trailer may give away a little too much.

I have some other graphic novels queued up to read that I will report on in due course.

Happy reading.

I like escapist movies and this one hit the spot. I had some idea what to expect from Edgar Wright having seen some of his others.

How cool. I loved comics when I was a lad, but I never really got into graphic novels. The closest I ever got was Archie Comics :)

That definitely looks like it's influenced by Manga, even the art.. I also watched a LOT of Japanese cartoons as a child... They were in English, of course, but I learn't in hindsight that they were all Japanese and dubbed over in English.

This definitely has the feel of an actual novel as the story flows through the whole series. Looks like a lot of work. My daughter reads some translated manga books. Those tend to still require you to start at what we consider the back of the book and read the panels right to left. I know it's a massive industry over there and we did look in some bookshops in Tokyo that had so many comics.

I also read comics as a kid, but am getting to the graphic novels now. I have built a bit of a collection. Some are definitely aimed at adults. I've got to know some artists here on Hive and gotten some insight into how they work.

I have also widened my horizon by reading the comics my eldest daughter has recommended. In her case manga (and yes, no doubt that Scott Pilgrim is inspired by the Japanese). I think it is a sign of your open mindedness that you jump aboard these new things. Many people just stay with the same cultural fare.

There is so much out there to enjoy so I will check out what I can. I don't worry so much about what some people might say I should read though. It has to be fun.

No, there's there's also no reason to conform to some mainstream standard. But it seems most people need a predictable social room. I sometimes think that peoples anxiety and need for safety is to blame for a lot of this worlds problems. I can't compete with hatred, envy, greed and anger of course :)

I didn't know there was a graphic novel for it, I thought it was just a movie. To be honest, I didn't care for the movie when I watched it years ago. The comics sound good though. I'd probably give them a go.

We all have different tastes :) The movie is a bit different. There's a lot of movies based on comics these days. The movie companies are always looking for the next big thing. We watched the latest Men In Black at the weekend, but I've not read any of the comics those are based on. Disney are into making movies based on theme park rides.

Yeah that's true. Pirates of the Caribbean is one that comes to mind.
