Sinking in the quicksand of my thought

avatar

In 1997 my other half and I went to see David Bowie perform at Shepherd's Bush Empire on his Earthling tour. You can see the setlist here. This is a fairly small venue and we were standing down in the lower level. I remember having to wait quite a while before the show started. My better half is not very tall and so she stood on the steps at the back for a better view. The show started with Bowie coming out with an acoustic guitar to sing Quicksand from the Hunky Dory album.

On that tour he was not playing all the obvious hits as I think he had tired of that. It was still a great show. I quite liked the drum and bass style he was using then and the drummer was amazing.

Ticket
We have a collection of tickets with a frame dedicated to Bowie. A few years ago we saw Mike Garson and others pay tribute to the man at the same venue.

Just over a week ago we saw Holy Holy that features Tony Visconti who worked a lot with Bowie. That day I listened to Hunky Dory, which is a damn fine album, and decided I needed to do a version of Quicksand. I played it at the pub the next day. A lot of people did not know the song, but then it is not one you often hear on the radio. You can tell he was reading a lot of esoteric stuff with mentions of various people and I assume there are other references in there.

It is not too hard to play, but it does change key after the first verse. I recorded a version at home last week to submit for @radioliquorice. For this I recorded the guitar and vocal separately and added some backing vocals on the chorus. The only effects are some compression and reverb.

I think this is a song I will perform again, but I have not yet mastered playing it from memory. That may take a while with all the words to learn. I often us chord sheets on a tablet at pub sessions, but I do have a fair few songs I can play without that, including Bowie's Space Oddity.

Rock on!

Yeah, when I saw him at the NIA (Birmingham National Indoor Arena), I remember him saying, "Don't worry, we'll get to the old stuff later." Sound & Vision Tour 1990

I also saw him on the Serious Moonlight Tour, The Bowl, Milton Keynes.

@dickturpin(1/1) gave you LUV. H-E tools | connect | <><

LUV in the dark? The confirmation-reply may soon be turned off. This would be to conserve and replenish Resource Credits. Even while operating in the dark, your LUV command will still go through as usual. You can always monitor LUV in your wallet, at explorer A or at explorer B, or best, in real time at the luv-log channel on Discord.

The missus saw him a few times before we got together. He kept on innovating until the end. I can appreciate that artists don't want to play the same stuff for decades even if it's what some in the audience want. They can go see a tribute act for that. When we saw him at Meltdown he played all of Low and then some old stuff, including Ziggy.

Having read loads over the years, I think he saw his work as a stepping stone to the next 'thing' rather than building a catalogue to milk over and over again.

Sounds good man. You're quite skilled with the strings. I've failed in my intention to practice piano regularly. I'm still as bad as when I started haha.

Your story is very interesting indeed.
Before, I used to go to choral concerts at my school, but I have never been to a concert by an artist that I like, I think I prefer to listen to them online.

If you spend time, dedication and patience you can get that and all the songs you want.

Thank you very much for sharing your post.

I have been to loads of concerts of various music from sweaty pubs to huge outdoor events. It can be a very different experience to listening to music on your own. The music is just part of it.

I like the sound of your guitar although I don't know the song.

Going to a show with one's other half looks like a cool thing to do

We've been to dozens of shows together. Lots of happy memories. Got a lot of the tickets on the wall to remind us.

Your voice is really nice in this quicksand audio and I like it. I must say that this is the first time I'm hearing anything about David Bowie but he must have been really good at his craft for you to like him.

I'm surprised you haven't heard Mr Bowie, but you come from a different culture. He's always been part of my life. He was an amazing artist who kept coming up with new ideas.

Well, I've not been a big fan of rock as a matter of fact, I didn't use to like it at all (even the sound of the rock guitar) but I love the sound of a guitar when I play it and when I hear it esp. if the person playing the guitar is good at it.

Over here, rock is not one of the sounds we hear while growing. It was mostly juju, fuji, apala and afro. I'm Pearlumie from Nigeria and those are the types of sounds I got accustomed to while growing up.

One thing I like about Hive is the mix of cultures. We can forget that others experience different music and other stuff. Now we can hear anything we want.

I friend showed me this site where you can listen to radio stations from anywhere in the world. I am just checking out some in Nigeria :)

It actually makes sense to know people from different cultures and how differently they do stuffs at the other end. Yay!! I'd love to use the site to listen to something other than our local stations here. You're from the UK? Maybe I could listen to some of yours from here too

Nice rendition!

It reminded me of a song with a melody that was probably inspired by part of this one. The artist/title of it is vexing me at the moment though. "Something Something In Summertime" by a modern female vocalist but that's all I got.

Actually typing out the above reminded me!

Not sure I've heard that song. Weird video. That melody is almost exactly the same! I'm not sure what the laws are on what you can copy, but Ed Sheeran has been in court accused of using someone else's tune.
