La Estación Park, a recreational place with railway history - Venezuela / Parque La Estación, un lugar recreativo con historia ferroviaria - Venezuela

Parks are always useful for the residents of a city, they offer a space for entertainment, sports or nature observation and sometimes they are also historical places, so visiting them becomes more interesting.

Los parques siempre son útiles para los pobladores de una ciudad, ofrecen un espacio para el entretenimiento, el deporte o la observación de la naturaleza y a veces pasa también que son lugares históricos, así que visitarlos se vuelve más interesante.

In the middle of last month (February), I went to an event that took place in La Estación (The Station) Park in La Victoria, Aragua State (Venezuela) and although I have been to this place before, I hadn't visited it so thoroughly and I hadn't gone very deep into its past. So here I bring you the results of this tour in images and information.

A mediados del mes pasado (febrero), fui a un evento que se realizó en el Parque La Estación de La Victoria, estado Aragua (Venezuela) y aunque he estado otras veces en este lugar no lo había recorrido con tanto detenimiento y tampoco había profundizado mucho en su pasado. Por aquí les traigo entonces los resultados de este paseo en imágenes e información.

The origin / El origen

Looking for information in reliable sources, I found that on February 1, 1894 and after 6 years of work, Venezuela inaugurated the railway system that covered the Caracas - Valencia route and extended along 179 km, facilitating the transport of people and cargo.

Buscando información en fuentes confiables, encontré que el 1ro de febrero de 1894 y después de 6 años de obras, Venezuela inauguraba el sistema ferroviario que cubría la ruta Caracas - Valencia y se extendía a lo largo de 179 Km facilitando el transporte de personas y carga.

The Great Railway of Venezuela, as it is known, had stations between the capital and several cities and towns in the center of the country: Caracas, Los Teques, Las Tejerías, La Victoria, San Mateo, Cagua, Turmero, Maracay, Guacara and Valencia.

El Gran Ferrocarril de Venezuela, como es conocido, tenía estaciones entre la capital y varias ciudades y pueblos del centro del país: Caracas, Los Teques, Las Tejerías, La Victoria, San Mateo, Cagua, Turmero, Maracay, Guacara y Valencia.

The engineer in charge of this work was the German Gustav Knoop, who was also a conservationist and that is why he took care of reforesting the areas that were intervened for the construction of the railway system, thus, where the train passed, many trees were planted and also several stations became parks.

El ingeniero encargado de esta obra fue el alemán Gustav Knoop, quien además era conservacionista y por eso se ocupó de reforestar las áreas que fueron intervenidas para la construcción del sistema ferroviario, así, por donde pasaba el tren, fueron sembrados muchos árboles y también varias estaciones se convirtieron en parques.

According to the popular Venezuelan chronicler Oscar Yanes, the engineer Knoop spent more than 25 years in this reforestation work and founded all the parks that were seen during the route from Caracas to Valencia. On this route the wagons went at 20 km/h and the trip lasted about 7 hours. Yanes says that the style of the forests and parks created on the tracks and stations by this engineer was exactly the same as the one in his country, Germany.

Según el popular cronista venezolano Oscar Yanes, el ingeniero Knoop estuvo más de 25 años en esa labor de reforestación y fundó todos los parques que se veían durante el recorrido de Caracas a Valencia. En esta ruta los vagones iban a 20 Km/h y el viaje duraba como unas 7 horas. Cuenta Yanes que el estilo de los bosques y parques creados en las vías y estaciones por este ingeniero, era exactamente igual que el que había en su país, Alemania.

The Great Railway of Venezuela worked for 72 years, between 1894 and 1966, then the oil boom came and gradually the cars, motorcycles, buses, etc., accelerated the end of that train system, a pity in my opinion because it should have been maintained operational and also expand it so that the country would have more communication channels. Today the State Railways Institute (IFE) is trying to move forward and complete a project that has been in the works for many years, the new National Railway System that will cover the entire country, it would be great to see it active soon.

El Gran Ferrocarril de Venezuela funcionó durante 72 años, entre 1894 y 1966, luego llegó la bonanza petrolera y progresivamente los carros, motos, autobuses, etc., aceleraron el fin de ese sistema de trenes, una lástima en mi opinión porque se debió mantener operativo y además ampliarlo para que el país tuviera más vías de comunicación. Hoy en día el Instituto de Ferrocarriles del Estado (IFE) está tratando de avanzar y culminar un proyecto que lleva muchos años en obras, el nuevo Sistema Ferroviario Nacional que abarcará todo el país, sería genial verlo activo pronto.

Now let's see what still remains of that old rail system, such as the spaces of La Estación Park in the city of La Victoria, so called (The Station) because one of the terminals was there.

Ahora veamos lo que aún queda de ese viejo sistema sobre rieles, como lo son los espacios del Parque La Estación de la ciudad de La Victoria, llamado así porque ahí estaba uno de los terminales.

Founded on the same day as the Great Railway of Venezuela, February 1, 1894 in the south of this town, the old house that served as a stop and the thick forest that surrounds it are still preserved there. Nothing remains of the track, rails or wagons.

Fundado el mismo día que el Gran Ferrocarril de Venezuela, el 1ro de febrero de 1894 en el sur de esta población, aún se conserva allí la vieja casona que servía como parada y el espeso bosque que la rodea. De la vía, los rieles o vagones no queda nada.

This building, the protagonist of the park, consists of a large room with two internal and two external bathrooms (which were used by passengers in transit), it has metal columns and a roof covered with flat tiles. Its floor is made of terracotta and the doors are made of wood, as well as the windows, which also have iron bars for protection.

Esta edificación, protagonista del parque, consta de una gran sala con dos baños internos y dos externos (que usaban los pasajeros en tránsito), tiene columnas de metal y un techo cubierto con tejas planas. Su piso es de terracota y las puertas son de madera, así como las ventanas, que tienen además unas rejas de hierro como protección.

The house has gone through many circumstances and rehabilitations throughout its existence and currently, after about 4 years of abandonment, it is once again being recovered, as are the facilities in the entire park. In Venezuela, the maintenance of public spaces is sometimes not as constant as it should be and then many resources have to be invested to make them reborn.

La casa ha pasado por muchas circunstancias y rehabilitaciones a lo largo de su existencia y actualmente después de unos 4 años de abandono, se encuentra nuevamente en recuperación, al igual que las instalaciones de todo el parque. En Venezuela el mantenimiento de los espacios públicos a veces no es constante como debería y luego se tienen que invertir muchos recursos para hacerlos renacer.

The day I went I asked what projects they had for the house and they told me that they were setting up an exhibition with models of emblematic places in La Victoria, since the room had not yet opened, I took a photo from the window.

El día que fui pregunté qué proyectos se tenían para la casa y me dijeron que estaban montando una exposición con maquetas de lugares emblemáticos de La Victoria, como aún no habían abierto la sala, tomé una foto desde la ventana.

Then, with my sister and my mother, we went for a walk through some of the areas that this 22-hectare park has, recognized as Municipal Historical Heritage.

Luego, con mi hermana y mi mamá, fuimos a caminar por algunas de las zonas que tiene este parque de 22 hectáreas, reconocido como Patrimonio Histórico Municipal.

Since it was declared a Recreational Park on December 11, 1977 by the National Parks Institute (Inparques), La Estación has seen many activities pass through here. It served as the headquarters of La Victoria Youth Symphony Orchestra in the late 1990s and in recent years several organized communities and cultural and ecological groups have developed different projects in their areas.

Desde que el 11 de diciembre de 1977 fuera declarado como Parque Recreativo por el Instituto Nacional de Parques (Inparques), La Estación ha visto muchas actividades pasar por aquí. Sirvió como sede de la Orquesta Sinfónica Juvenil de La Victoria a finales de la década de 1990 y los últimos años varias comunidades organizadas y colectivos culturales y ecológicos, han desarrollado diferentes proyectos en sus áreas.

Spaces and activities / Espacios y actividades

Currently the main reason people go to La Estación Park is to exercise. Apart from the extensive natural areas and the cement paths where you can walk or jog, there are facilities such as machines to sculpt the body (bicycle, stair climber, weights, bars, etc), soccer field, table tennis and other activities.

Actualmente la principal razón por la que las personas acuden al Parque La Estación es para ejercitarse. Aparte de las extensas áreas naturales y las caminerías de cemento por las que se puede andar o trotar, hay instalaciones como las máquinas para esculpir el cuerpo (bicicleta, escaladora, pesas, barras, etc), cancha de fútbol, tenis de mesa y otras actividades.

As in any park, there is a special area for children, where there is a circuit with a slide and passageways where they can have fun. On weekends there is a climbing wall and horseback riding.

Como en todo parque, existe un área especial para los niños, donde hay un circuito con tobogán y pasadizos en el que pueden divertirse. Los fines de semana hay pared de escalada y paseos a caballo.

As I told you at the beginning, I came to this park to attend an event, called the Victorian Reunion, which has been held annually in this city for a long time on the occasion of the celebrations, every February 12, of Youth Day, the date in which the Battle of La Victoria (1814) is commemorated, one of the clashes between royalists and republicans for the Independence of Venezuela.

Tal como les conté al principio, vine a este parque para asistir a un evento, llamado Reencuentro Victoriano, el cual desde hace tiempo se hace anualmente en esta ciudad con motivo de las celebraciones, cada 12 de febrero, del Día de La Juventud, fecha en la que se conmemora la Batalla de La Victoria (1814), uno de los enfrentamientos entre realistas y republicanos por la Independencia de Venezuela.

From the morning until late at night many cultural activities are presented: dance, music, theater, etc.

Desde la mañana y hasta altas horas de la noche se presentan muchas actividades culturales: danza, música, teatro, etc.

And of course, there is also a craft and food fair for all budgets.

Y claro, también hay una feria artesanal y de comida para todos los bolsillos.

Now, even if there is no event in the park, it is nice to visit it, although the conditions are not the best, a situation that the mayor's office is currently taking care of. Hopefully they will fully recover these spaces and above all maintain them.

Ahora bien, así no haya ningún evento en el parque, es agradable visitarlo aunque las condiciones en las que está no son las mejores, situación que la alcaldía está atendiendo actualmente. Ojalá recuperen totalmente estos espacios y sobre todo los mantengan.

Its landscape design is still spectacular and has many plant species. According to what I read, when it was founded, exotic trees were planted there, such as araucarias and camphor that still exist and are unique in the country, I would have to go back to see if I can identify them. There are some trees that do have a sign with their name on it.

Su diseño paisajístico sigue siendo espectacular y cuenta con muchas especies vegetales. Según leí, cuando se fundó fueron sembrados allí árboles exóticos como las araucarias y el alcanfor que aún subsisten y son únicos en el país, tendría que volver para ver si los identifico. Hay algunos árboles que sí tienen un cartel con su nombre.

La Estación Park is considered the green lung of La Victoria and an important tourist and biological point.

If you look carefully, you can get useful things, such as bamboo sticks that can be used for trekking or Sandbox (Hura crepitans) tree seeds like the one in the photo below that many people here turn into a pendant for a necklace since it is shaped like Dolphin. My sister collected some because she carves and paints them.

Si se observa con atención, se pueden conseguir cosas útiles, como palos de bambú que te pueden servir para hacer senderismo o semillas del árbol de Jabillo como esta de la foto de abajo que acá mucha gente convierte en dije para collar ya que tiene forma de delfín. Mi hermana recolectó algunas porque los talla y los pinta.

Another interesting area of this place is the nursery, currently it has few plants because as I said, the spaces are being recovered, but if they continue like this they will once again be suppliers of various plant species and will also provide training in agriculture.

Otra área interesante de este lugar es el vivero, actualmente tiene pocas plantas porque como dije, se están recuperando los espacios, pero si siguen así volverán a ser proveedores de varias especies vegetales y también impartirán formación en agricultura.
