Kandy City - Central Province / Journey Through Sri Lanka

My trip to Sri Lanka had many unforgettable moments, but one of the most special was the day I spent in Kandy. It quickly became one of my favorite cities, because of its people, the landscapes, and the breathtaking view over the whole valley. We climbed up to the giant Buddha statue, visible from almost anywhere in town, and from there we admired the lake and the surrounding temples. It was also a privilege to wander through its streets and enjoy the local restaurants, tasting some amazing Sri Lankan food.

Mi viaje a Sri Lanka tuvo muchos momentos inolvidables, pero uno de los más especiales fue el día que pasé en la ciudad de Kandy. Fue, sin duda, una de mis favoritas: por su gente, sus paisajes y las vistas de toda la ciudad. Subimos hasta el monumento del Buda gigante, visible desde casi cualquier punto, y desde allí contemplamos el lago y los templos que lo rodean. También fue un privilegio perderme por sus calles y descubrir pequeños restaurantes donde probé una comida espectacular de Sri Lanka.

I’ll start with the breathtaking views of the city of Kandy, when we climbed up to visit the Vairavakanda Vihara Buddha Statue, the giant Buddha temple. It stands on a hill about two kilometers from the city center, offering one of the most stunning panoramas of all Kandy.

Primero empezaré por las impresionantes vistas de la ciudad de Kandy, cuando subimos a visitar el templo del Buda gigante, Vairavakanda Vihara Buddha Statue. Se encuentra sobre una colina, a unos dos kilómetros del centro de la ciudad, y desde allí se puede disfrutar de una de las mejores panorámicas de todo Kandy.

As you reach the entrance of this Buddhist temple, the first thing that immediately catches your eye is the huge Buddha statue in Dhana Mudra position, the meditation posture linked to his first enlightenment. Standing 26 meters tall, it’s one of the largest in Sri Lanka. You can see it from almost anywhere in the city, but up close, its size feels truly majestic and awe-inspiring.

Al llegar a la entrada de este templo budista, lo primero que llama la atención, como es natural, es la enorme estatua de Buda en posición Dhana Mudra, la postura de meditación asociada a su primera iluminación. Con sus 26 metros de altura, es una de las más grandes de Sri Lanka. Desde cualquier punto de la ciudad se puede divisar su silueta blanca, pero al verla de cerca resulta aún más imponente y sobrecogedora.

When we finally reached the top, it felt like a reward for climbing the stairs and the hill. We were greeted by beautiful statues displayed inside glass cases, and another one placed in a small garden with a huge, magnificent tree. They were miniature replicas of the giant Buddha figure visible from all around the city. Another detail I loved was the row of elephants carved beneath the glass displays, and a striking statue in the center, which resembled the figure of a monkey.

Al llegar a la cima, sentimos que habíamos recibido el premio por subir las escaleras y la colina. Allí nos esperaban unas maravillosas estatuas expuestas en vitrinas, además de otra situada en un pequeño jardín con un árbol enorme y precioso. Eran réplicas en miniatura de la gran figura del Buda que se ve desde toda la ciudad. Otro detalle que me encantó fueron los elefantes tallados que parecían emerger desde la base de las vitrinas, y una curiosa estatua en el centro, que recordaba a la figura de un mono.

Later, with a bit of sadness, we had to leave the temple and walk back down the hill. But our spirits lifted again when we reached the beautiful Kandy Lake, seen from below and up close — a vast stretch of water surrounded by greenery and lights that guided us to our next stop: the Temple of the Tooth Relic. This walled complex, with lovely white walls that leave small spaces for oil lamps, houses several remarkable sites: the Vahahitina Maligawa, where the sacred relic is kept; the Magul Maduwa or Royal Palace; the International Buddhist Museum, and the Four Devales of Kandy, shrines dedicated to specific deities.

Más tarde, con mucha pena, tuvimos que abandonar aquel templo y comenzar el descenso por la colina. Pero enseguida recuperamos la sonrisa al contemplar, desde abajo y de cerca, la belleza del lago de Kandy: un lago enorme, rodeado de vegetación y luces, que nos acompañó durante el camino hacia nuestra siguiente visita: el Templo del Diente de Buda. Este recinto amurallado, con preciosas paredes blancas que dejan espacio para colocar lámparas de aceite, alberga varios lugares de gran importancia: el Vahahitina Maligawa, donde se guarda la reliquia; el Magul Maduwa o Palacio Real; el Museo Internacional del Budismo, y los cuatro Devales de Kandy, templos dedicados a distintas deidades.

It truly was a wonderful experience to visit these temples, filled with so much architectural beauty, artistic detail, and Buddhist decorative sculpture. It was also deeply impressive and meaningful to watch the locals attending their prayers and offering rituals. I loved being, for one day, a small part of this great expression of spirituality.

La verdad es que fue una experiencia maravillosa poder visitar estos templos, que lucen tanto detalle arquitectónico, tanto detalle artístico, y tanto detalle en la decoración y las esculturas budistas. También fue muy impresionante e interesante poder ver a los locales atendiendo a sus oraciones y ofrendas. Me encantó poder ser, por un día, partícipe de esta gran muestra de espiritualidad.
