Economic Priorities: Reconsidering Our Spendings for Sustainable Development

(Edited)

Have you ever felt the need to get up and walk up to the president of your country to ask him, "What on earth are you doing up there, sir?" Well, I do. And it's probably for the same reason that they are behaving in a manner that one just doesn't get. Well, here's one of those moments for me, and I have two things the government should reconsider, as they may very well positively affect the economy.

20230404_045618_0000.jpg

As unstable as our economy is and as out of shape as it is, it may seem as though there are not enough resources to go around. The truth, however, is that there is a lot—not necessarily enough to go around—but a large chunk of it is used in inexplicable ways.

There are many aspects that the government devotes too much attention and resources to, causing some other important sectors to lack attention and resources. The following isn't a list that would completely alleviate our deficiencies, but it should go a long way toward making the country a better place. These are things the government should spend less on, and the others they should focus more on.

Excessive Spending On Politicians.

You see, there are many people that look forward to becoming politicians, not because they are philanthropists or truly interested in the wellbeing of the country and her people, but for the most obvious reason that politicians are often handsomely paid for doing their work.

I really don't understand exactly what most of these politicians do. All I hear is that there are sittings here and there, but I really don't get it yet. I do get that there is a need for leadership and order, and so we put people in charge to oversee those things. What I don't get is why they are paid so much like they are the ones giving me the oxygen to survive.

untitled.gif

I have heard about how some of them get allowances for a lot of these things, even the most mundane things like buying clothes. I may be wrong, but here's my point: It is understandable that government officials require some level of financial support to perform their duties, but the allocation of funds for trivial expenses seems very unreasonable to me.

Many of these people don't even do nothing that they deserve such an amount of money for. There are real people doing real stuff, but they do not get anything. There are way more important things to pour money into, which would make the country a much better place.

How about the electricity?

There are just too many things that need fixing in this country of mine. There are so many cracks to fill and so many bends to straighten. If I were to begin to list the tons of things that need a lot of attention and money too, we might have ourselves quite a lengthy discussion. Let me just stick with electricity.

At this stage of my life, regular electricity supply is still a myth to me. When I think about how other countries are able to have electricity running in their homes, their schools, their hospitals, and basically everywhere, I wonder just how that could be possible. Can you blame me? I have been used to the darkness since I was born here.

untitled.gif

As a matter of fact, there is no electricity where I currently reside with my parents, and it has been that way for at least five years since we moved here. Even more alarming, I had already gone 7 years without mains electricity prior to moving here.

For how long will we continue to live like this? If only the government could pour more money into the facilities we need to generate and supply regular electricity for our people. I do not even mean "consistent" electricity. I mean the availability of electricity a lot more often.

Here is something that the government could lavish their excessive spending politicians on, so we all, like the "big people," can all enjoy the benefit of it. It's not so easy, but it all starts by pointing our hands at these things.

divider4.png

To reiterate, these are not the necessary solution to our problems in Nigeria—which are bountiful—but these, alongside many other critical considerations, will go a long way in putting the country on track and in the right direction.

I am very concerned about the electricity because it is very disappointing to still live like that even in these modern times. Till something better happens, we'll remain steadfast and keep strong.

Just walking up to the president to ask questions won't resolve my issues with him, I need to punch is face of wipe him chord on the neck probably he will feel what we are feeling as citizens.

I once heard that every sitting at the national assembly come with a huge tip, these guys are doing nothing and they earn huge. There are people out there doing the real stress but they aren't recognized not to even talk of getting paid properly.

The electricity issue is a huge problem as well but these people don't feel concerned because there is always other source of electricity for them.

I hope the person who will help this country will eventually be born someday.

Comrade, it is like you are a mind-reader. That is the ulterior motive I have. I should just land hin 2 by 2 on his neck. I don't want to even know if it is jagaban or buhari. The person wey dey there, a him go collect.

The issue is that these people are selfish. They forget what it's like to be us citizens. As long as all is good and well for them, they do not do anything for the welbeing of our country. We have countless problems, but there they are sending their kids to other countries and saving themselves.

Creating more means of income and managing those will have on ground before will definitely help and at times I do say government alone is not the Major problem here, most citizens today are the source of each other hardship, but of all having a good mindset and management understanding helps at both end

Bam! It really isn't all of the government's fault that the government is like this. We have our hands in the problems of our country.

A good example would be the problems with cash in the country. We know it's scarce now and that's a problem, but we make it an even bigger problem by putting a price on cash, especially the POS people.

I am glad you see it in this direction. Thank you for your contribution.

Have you ever felt the need to get up and walk up to the president of your country to ask him, "What on earth are you doing up there, sir?" Well, I do.

I have many times felt this and it's like I should have a super power to slap his cheeks too 😅😅 because you cannot do this ordinarily.

But, the truth is, government aren't doing well. Our leaders are lavishing money on unnecessary things instead of doing what they should do for the betterment of the citizens and the country.

Take the electricity for instance, this is something we should be enjoying on a daily basis. Even if they cannot be consistent with it for 24/7, at least there should be for some hours every day. What is bad in there?

Where my parents stayed before, we were in total darkness for over five years, thanks to those putting on Generator to charge our gadgets, it could have been worse. This is something they should work on, instead of spending on what they shouldn't.

If you are going to land a slap on that man, you need to make it very effective. Gather enough power, so that when the slap lands, it will reset his brain. He needs that factory reset.

Another thing that makes this electricity problem even more appalling is that Republic of Benin, for example, is getting 24 hours of electricity, and they are getting it from Lagos. How is that even happening? Thos is the so-called Lagos don't even get that kind of electricity supply.

It is only God that can save us in this country.
Thank you for your contribution, Princess.

it will reset his brain. He needs that factory reset.

I need to go for training to do this so I won't miss bringing out that reset from the President 🤣🤣

Can you imagine? How will Benin be getting stable light from Lagos who is the source and there's nothing of such there? So pathetic 😬

May God help us oo

Things are just upsidedown in this country.

Please, train well. The destiny of a great nation rests on your shoulders.

The unnecessary expenses on some things in our country is adding to the unstable economy we have today. Imagine reducing the huge millions those politicians collects as their monthly salary and pump it on education or agric sector, that sector will bounce back a bit but our government aren't seeing that. My less activities in hive recently has been this same electricity issue. It's just not nice that our government aren't paying attention to important issues in our nation

Just imagine what the country could achieve if only we just put more money into more important things.

I totally understand how it is for you dealing with electricity and how it is affecting your activity. The truth is, I struggle a lot to be as active as I can be. I have just gotten used to it.

I hope you get your electricity issue solved soon. Sorry, Sweet Nkem.

It indeed is. The reason we have the government is for the people. Hopefully, our government does better in the future.

Thank you for your awesome contribution. I'd be glad to see you around more.

Sir, enough is an understatement for the kind of money we have in this country. If there is enough money to be kept in one place in bags and no one is using then until it gets spoiled then what are we saying? In fact, let me rest my case here. Because as I be ehh, I dey vex oh! But make I hold myself.
Thanks for sharing. Don't mind those guys up there. She I they will come down to meet us some day.

You've said it all mehn
I'm honestly also concerned about those special and those representatives, is it that they are talking and the president is not listening or they themselves are just an airhead because many of those sitting down there will calm professors and other nonexisting titles that are almost as useless as they are no offense

I too with wish I could see for myself what these people do up there. It does feel like their playing games with us. We may very well need better leaders.

Thanks for the post. I'm Canadian but have property in an area with no electricity. It's beautiful to visit but hard to live on. Let's pray your politicians find wisdom or your community finds a way to prosper despite them.

A little joke for you...

Q. How are politicians like diapers?

A. They should both be changed regularly...and for the same reason.

You mean there is a place in Canada without electricity? I am surprised. How is that even so?

And that was a really good joke. Haha

Have you seen Canada on a map? Land size wise we are about 10x larger than Nigeria (I think that's where I saw you were from). We only have 30 Million population so about 1/7th the population. That means that there are very large areas that have no people, no electricity, no phone service, no running water. Most of it belongs to the government but I have a 60ac piece.

Having said that I also have 4ac in the Philippines. It doesn't have water or electricity there either. At least it has cellular phone service though :)

Canada is a very large place. It does make sense for it to have underdeveloped areas as it's not like there's people everywhere. I just never thought of it like that. I have always pictured it differently.

You sure have quite the properties around. You must have a family of your own. How are you all doing?

Just for fun..

This is a picture taken while driving to my property in Rosswood, BC

I'm in the middle of trying to develop some places for people to visit and enjoy nature. Currently there is a pole for satellite internet and a generator.

and there are thick forests, wetlands and mountains all around. I thought this area was especially pretty.

As for my family. Yes. I'm 54 and have a wife and two kids. This is my wife and I on our anniversary.

And I have two sons. Both are teenagers.

The younger one is doing well. He has OK grades in school, a nice girlfriend, fun hobbies and a part-time job. My older son is having a few challenges right now. He started a great paying job (making more than me) but got in a motorcycle accident and his small finger got ripped off. It got reattached but that means 6 weeks no work. He also broke up with his girlfriend of almost 3 years so he's dealing with the heartache that causes... but he's a tough kid and will be fine.

Thanks for taking an interest and maybe you can share a bit about yourself?

Oh, wow.
What mountains are those? They look so cool.

This place you are building, is it some sort of resort center for commercial purposes? And is it far from the town?

I am sorry about your second son. He is a tough kid and he will be over with this rough patch soon enough. You have great sons.

I am guessing you must have been a hottie yourself in your days. You look very good at 54, and your wife is an absolute beauty. You got sharp eyes.

Well, I am but a young chap. I just graduated from the university, and I turned 22 a few months ago. Basically, I am trying to figure out my life. You must remember how being in the twenties is like. And I am Nigerian, so yeah, those mountains would look cool to me.

Thanks for the lovely reply. The mountain you saw was part of the Skeena Mountain range. I go through that to get to my place. My place is actually in the Nass Valley which is surrounded on four sides by different mountain ranges:

The Coast Mountains to the west
The Kitimat Ranges to the southwest
The Boundary Ranges to the northwest
The Skeena Mountains to the east

and in between all those mountains (we call them the Seven sisters) there is a beautiful lake called Kitsumkalum lake.

This is a stock image of the lake and mountains taken about a 7 minute drive from my place (near the boat launch if you want to go fishing or float on the lake)

As far as how far is it from town. Well, Rosswood only has 100 people and only has one store. So from the center of Rosswood I'm maybe 1km away.

That's our one store and the one phone. There is no cellular service or phone service in town. Most people use satellite internet with phone link through that. My friends once came to visit and they told me I gave them the wrong directions. They said the correct directions "Drive until you think you have come to the end of the earth, turn left and drive until you know you have fallen off!"

However, to the nearest actual town with real services I'm probably about a 35min drive.

As for resort center for commercial purposes? No. Absolutely no. .... mostly. I'm not sure I can do it but my dream is to make it a retreat for anyone who loves nature at very low cost (basically just to cover property taxes and expenses). I hope to make a few cabins on property and have one available only to Hive members so Hive can have a secret retreat.

Regarding me being a hottie. Wow I had to laugh so hard at that one. I basically couldn't get a date because by Canadian standards I'm pretty substandard. My sons get more dates in a week than I got in a decade (my older son has 4 dates lined up this week. I got 3 dates in 10 years). However, its not the quantity of dates, its getting the right one to be your wife and yes I thank God for directing me to the right woman for me.

Do I remember being 22? Yup. It sucked pretty bad. Flat broke. Student loans. Girlfriend dumped me for my best friend. So glad I'm not there anymore.

May I ask what you studied in University? Maybe a little bit about your goals/ambitions?

Side note: I normally only use this account for Splinterlands and Actifit. My main posting account is @terganftp and I'm meeting lots of other Nigerians on the Hive Learners community.
