Public School vs. Private School: I Experienced Both.

Greetings Everyone.

Welcome to my blog and another wonderful edition of the Hive Learners' featured post. Many of us were opportune to attend just private schools until the day we left high school, and some of us had parents who wanted to give them the best, but things did not go as planned, and we had to experience both public and private schools.

While growing up, my parents wanted my siblings and me to have the best education possible. My siblings and I attended a private school throughout our primary school days and started a private secondary school until my parents could no longer afford to pay for all of us, and we, who are the seniors, had to switch to a public school. It affected me, but I had to do everything within my power to cope with the new development.

When I first switched to a public school, I felt like the worst had happened, but when I started making new friends and getting to know people, the whole feeling died off, and I realized being in a public school is more fun. In private schools, the teachers ensure the students are doing the right thing because their salary depends on it, but in public schools, whether the teachers care or not, at the end of the month they will still get paid.

Did I enjoy going to school in a public school?

Of course, yes, I did enjoy schooling in a public school; the traditions or ways of doing things in a public school are completely different compared to a private school. In my private school, the prefects are prohibited from laying hands on junior students, but in a public school, that's the fun part of being a prefect.

Prefects rule the entire school, and only a few teachers can bend them to their will. I cannot recall how many times I had to run away from school because prefects were looking for me. If they had caught me that day, I doubt I'd be alive to tell the story.

Public school made me strong by force. I was quite lazy and easily intimidated back in the day, but joining a public school gave me no other choice but to man up and be like everyone, as I needed to be strong in order to survive.

Changes that need to be implemented.

Public schools are not as bad as they are made to look, but below are a few challenges and changes that need to be implemented to bring them up to standard:

  • Nonchalant Teachers: A disciplinary team should be put in place to make sure teachers who are nonchalant about their work are punished. My mathematics teacher always said it boldly those days: "Whether I teach or not, I will get paid at the end of the month.".

  • Provision of Necessary Needs for Students: Many public schools lack the facilities to pass knowledge: no good labs, no good libraries, and the government is not doing anything about it. In so many cases, the government releases the funds, but due to corruption, an individual takes them all, forgetting the fact they are jeopardizing the future of innocent kids.
