2022 - Quiet Quitting

avatar

There is a phenomenon going on with current employees called quiet quitting. In summary employees quiet quit is when employees take it upon themselves to make a work and life boundary where by they work only at bare minimum while use more of their work time to do personal activities.

Pre-Covid and Post-Covid

Remote work was very limited pre-covid, but after the enforced lock down many employees were made to work from home. This allowed the employees to take on a different perspective in regards to work.

When employees had to go to their offices to perform work they would spend likely more than 40 hours a week. That is because they needed to commute to work, train themselves to perform better and other activities related to the normal work hours of 9am - 5pm. In short employees were spending more time than what was expected of them to get their work done. This approach has been common placed for decades, but post-covid things changed.

The required work from home for months if not years in 2020 has given many employees an alternative way of life while working. The remote working has given employees unattended freedom while working for a paycheck. This has lead to many feeling they are not willing to go the extra mile when trying to complete their work. Instead they wanted to live life on their own terms while staying employed.

By working at bare minimum they naively believe it was sufficient to keep their jobs while spending more time towards doing things they enjoy unrelated to their job. With remote work they would not be fully seen by their employers throughout a typical work day.

Conclusions

When I first heard about quiet quitting I thought it was a respectable approach since people should have the right to do what they please. However once I think over the reality is that when I am employed it is an contractual agreement that I have to spend specific hours toward work. I should not have the flexibility to do other things if I am contractually obligated to perform my job at specific hours.

In the end if I do not want to work the hours that is specified for me I should quit and find another job. Holding onto one just to do bare minimum is not only hurting my career but also the profits of my employer. In turn its a lose lose for all sides if I do not put in the proper effort to completing a job.

Good point. There is certainly quite some people who do this and it’s not good for the companies they work for and for them neither.
But additionally we maybe need more part time jobs with for example a four hour work week since many people do not want to spend 40+ hours a week on working for others. They also want to have more time for themselves, their hobbies and family. That doesn’t mean they do only the minimum at their job but just less hours.

Post covid force a lot of people to do and feel first hand what it would be like to work from home and honestly it made some people wise up about what they really want in life. I accept that those who focus fully on working during the hours expected to succeed but the temptation to do less while earning the same has left some to go that route.

Working a specific number of hours is something that I have never understood. I am for the efficient way of spending time. Some people need much more time than others to complete the same task.

That certainly is another point of discussion. A lot of white collar jobs likely don’t need the fixed 40 hours a week to achieve. Yet people have been use to it for many years and have it set to be like so. Times are evolving and maybe there will be some sort of middle ground where people work specific hours during or night but not needing it be 40hours a week. !PIZZA !LUV

First time I heard about this term, but I don't like to do the bare minimum to keep the job and have a lifestyle at the same time.

I think it depends but I don't see any reason for people not to do so. It's not as good for the business and you might be the first one cut off when layoffs come. Either way, I guess it just depends on your priorities.

Priority should be to employer and job if that person signed an agreement to be paid hourly or salary. Some employees have lost sight of that !LUV !wine

I see this in some people, now I know what to call it. I wish they would just move on because it makes more work for me. Most of them cant do any better so they stick around.

Covid was such a thing that made catastrophe in the lives of people but at other side taught us how to be pro-active staying at home. It looks as all the evil things have a certain positive side, if we only find whats that lies behind.

Good point 👍

Certainly a wake up call for people who were simply career driven but there is a fine line between work and life. Balancing both is difficult and sometimes impossible due to time constraints. Working from home is changing that part and it will be interesting how employers and employees handle it from here and near future. !PIZZA !LOL

It's never a good idea to steal, and this is the same thing. If hired for ten hours of work, one should give ten hours.
