It was my first regatta since my parents bought me that little boat for my birthday... And another birthday was coming soon!
The smell of saltpeter was pleasant to me as soon as I woke up and when I got up the sun was just making its first attempts to fill the morning with color.
In the club there was a lot of enthusiasm for this regatta... Well, actually here everything was done with enthusiasm.
I had a light breakfast in the cafeteria and as soon as I finished it, the friends who would accompany me in the competition arrived: Daylín - the girl I liked -, Mr. Silvano - who proclaimed himself "old sea dog" and Eduardo, with his guitar. on the shoulder as always. Sometimes I thought if he hadn't been born with that guitar. In the eleven years that I had known him, I had never seen him without it!
Each one in their positions - me, at the helm, Mr. Silvano at my side in case I need support for something, Daylín looking at me, smiling at me and drinking a huge glass of coconut water at the same time and Eduardo sitting on a bench with an awkward air, in his world: the lost gaze into space while he sang and played "El Elegido" (The chosen one) by Silvio Rodríguez. I was going to ask him to sing something about the sea, but at that moment they gave the starting signal and we set off.
Mr.Silvano had advised me to leave the maximum speed of 60 knots for later. That at the beginning and in the middle of the race I remained average. I think everyone had thought the same.
It was a cloudy day, so I took off the blue cap I was wearing.
I thought your parents would come
I would have liked that but they went to the Riviera... for a friend's birthday. I would have gone with them, but I already had this commitment. If they had not brought forward the date of the regatta, I would be right now enjoying the view of the Mediterranean.
Daylín raised her eyebrows and I smiled at her. I would have liked to know if she enjoyed being around me like I enjoyed her closeness.
We spent the morning entertained by the competition and returned satisfied because I had achieved fourth place among 22 participants, being the only rookie.
I was happy because at a time when Mr. Silvano was taking over for me at the helm, with Eduardo's voice playing and singing "Eternally" by Demis Roussos in the background, I was finally able to put my shyness aside, discover my feelings for Daylín, find out that it was reciprocated and I had already written in my WhatsApp status: "My girlfriend is happy with my performance in the regatta."

Era mi primera regata desde que mis padres me compraran esa pequeña embarcación para mi cumpleaños... ¡Y ya venía otro cumpleaños dentro de poco!
El olor a salitre me fue grato nada más despertar y cuando me levanté el sol apenas hacía sus primeros intentos para llenar de color la mañana.
En el club había mucho entusiasmo con esta regata... Bueno, en realidad acá todo se hacía con entusiasmo.
Tomé un desayuno ligero en la cafetería y nada más terminarlo llegaron los amigos que me acompañaría en la competencia: Daylín - la chica que me gustaba - , el Sr. Silvano - quien se autoproclamaba "viejo lobo de mar" y Eduardo, con su guitarra al hombro como siempre. A veces pensaba si habría nacido con esa guitarra ¡En once años que llevaba conociéndolo nunca lo había visto sin ella!
Ubicados cada uno en sus puestos - yo, al timón, el Sr. Silvano a mi lado por si llegara a necesitar apoyo para algo, Daylín mirándome, sonriendome y tomando a la vez un inmenso vaso de agua de coco y Eduardo sentado en un banco con aire desmañado, en su mundo: la mirada perdida al vacío mientras cantaba y tocaba "El Elegido", de Silvio Rodríguez. Le iba a pedir cantará algo sobre el mar, pero en ese momento dieron la señal de partida y arrancamos.
El Sr.Silvano me había aconsejado dejar la velocidad máxima de 60 nudos para después. Que al inicio y al medio de la carrera me mantuviera entre el promedio. Creo que todos habían pensado lo mismo.
Era un día nublado, así que me quité la gorra azul que llevaba.
- Pensé que tus padres vendrían
- Eso habría querido pero se fueron a la Riviera... al cumpleaños de un amigo. Habría ido con ellos, pero ya tenía este compromiso. Si no hubieran adelantado la fecha de la regata estaría en este momento disfrutando de la vista del Mediterráneo.
Daylín alzó las cejas y yo le sonreí. Me hubiera gustado saber si disfrutaba estar cerca de mi como yo disfrutaba de su cercanía.
Pasamos la mañana entretenidos con la competencia y regresamos satisfechos porque había logrado el cuarto lugar entre 22 participantes siendo el único novato.
Yo estaba feliz porque en un momento en que el Sr. Silvano me hacía la suplencia con el timón, teniendo de fondo la voz de Eduardo tocando y cantando "Eternally" de Demis Roussos pude, al fin, echar mi timidez a un lado, descubrir mis sentimientos a Daylín, enterarme de que era correspondido y ya en mi estado de WhatsApp había escrito: "Mi novia está feliz por mi desempeño en la regata".
