Introducing some fruits in season in my Asian country the Philippines.

IMG_20220114_170253_1.jpg

Greetings everyone,

I have here today some Asian fruits in season in my country the Philippines.

I went to the marketplace to pay my bills and it's almost 3 km from my place so I use to ride a bicycle to save from the tricycle expenses since starting from the pandemic tricycle fees are almost tripled. I used to ride a bicycle in the sense I can save and also it was my way of exercise.

Anyways after I finished my business at the market I headed home until I passed this fruit vendor a few meters away from the market. I was attracted by the fruits that I only see in season so I stop by and ask for the price and I was not surprised since they are in season and just come out for selling. Prices are quite expensive, especially for what has happened last month. I was salivating to eat them so I decided to buy just a few grams each.

There were 3 kinds of fruit namely Mangosteen(purple), Rambutan(red), and lanzones(yellow) but I only bought the two for 500 grams each of rambutan and lanzones

What is Rambutan?

IMG_20220118_113651.jpg

  • Rambutans are furry, bright red fruits with a creamy white centre. This fruit is native to Malaysia, but have recently spread throughout the world. It is closely related to several other edible tropical fruits including lychee and longan (that honestly, I've never tried)

I don't have too much story for a Rambutan fruit all I know is I just love eating them but sometimes I got struggled to open them. I use my teeth to open and bite the whole fruit and I tried tasting its seeds after for it looked like almond but the taste is not 😁😅.

What is Lanzones?

IMG_20220118_120224.jpg

  • Lanzones - is sweet, tangy, a delicious round oval berry that closely resembles grapes but two times larger. It is usually found in Southern Islands in the Philippines and other Asian countries.

Lanzones is derived from the word lason which means in English poison. I can remember the book of the story back in my elementary days about lanzones. It's was once known poisonous and even humans don't get closer to the tree but then there's a day that a woman came and pick some fruits to eat due to her hunger. To their surprise, the woman didn't get poisoned. They think that the woman remove the poisons from the fruit and so that day people started to harvest Lanzones fruit for eating.

That was my childhood memory about lanzones, fortunately, I love their taste and the only problem is when you can buy those super sour varieties and the worst is when you can chew its seeds because they were super bitter too. Note that when you buy lanzones look for the seedless ones so you can worry less.

Both fruits are all my favourite. I hope you enjoy this content and it gives you information.

How about you have tried these fruits too? feel free to share with me your story I would be very happy 🙂.

Ooooh, yum! I lived on Bali for a while and I guess because Indonesia is relatively close they also had rambutans and mangosteens in abundance. Gosh I miss them! So I loved seeing your post about them. I've never heard of lanzones before, but I'll have to keep my eyes open for them the next time I travel to Asia.

I do know that rambutan translates to "hairy fruit" in English and I can confirm that they do in fact taste a lot like both lychees and longans 😀 Meanwhile, I think mangosteen might be one of my very favourite fruit ever! They're so sweet!

Hi, @consciouscat Thank you for dropping by. I don't have any idea how abundant Lanzones in other Asian countries but mangosteen and rambutans are sometimes can be seen featured in the hive. I do love mangosteen too but it was a lot expensive than the two and I only got enough money for lanzones and rambutan at that time. Maybe next time I'll buy it too. I love to make mangosteen tea from its skin one day.

Ooooh, tea from the mangosteen! That sounds delicious, @luckylaica 😀

I also remember they were far more expensive than most of the other fruit on Bali, so I would only buy them as a rare treat, and usually just one! 😂

I only know Rambutan, which we get in our supermarkets too. I love them, although, I am sure the ones you have are must tastier, because they are so fresh. I would love to taste the Lanzones too and yes, they are similar to grapes. Especially inside. Yum 🧡😋🧡

I guess so. Lanzones is less tasty than rambutan but if you hit the sweetest lanzones for sure you would love it 😉.

Great variety of fruits you have there! I like lanzones but I still have trouble eating rambutan, I don't find it quite as tasty, maybe in the future, I would learn to love it.

Hi Laica,
Three of my favourite right here!😋 It's hard to say which I love the best, however, I would sit and eat 2 kilos of rambutan till my stomach screamed NO MORE!
Mangosteen, I love but always over-priced, and then get home and find that they were not fresh.
Longones, love the flavour, but a bit too sticky.

I hope you are doing better:)

Hi Camille,
I just found out you love them too. 😅

They're all in the season but super pricy at the moment.
We're slowly doing better now. Thank you. I hope you're doing well too.
