It is 2024... As expected, I have started the year on the streets of the village taking photographs. As expected, my head is full of many different thoughts and some even new ones, despite the fact that these are the same streets where I have been doing this for years...

Es 2024... Como era de esperarse, he comenzado el año en las calles del pueblo haciendo fotografías. Como también era de esperarse, mi cabeza está repleta de pensamientos muy diversos y algunos incluso nuevos, a pesar de tratarse de las mismas calles en las cuales he estado haciendo esto por años...

The village is slowly fading, thinning out and disappearing... I am sure that in a couple of decades there won't be much of the past left to photograph here. The "Montalbán of yesteryear" will have died of loneliness, idleness and sadness. By then (God willing) I will be even older, well into my 70s, I'm sure I'll be taking other kinds of photos, I don't know. Maybe I will just be a memory in the heads of some people here and a name on some tombstone in our very poorly preserved local cemetery. Time will tell, not me. But what I am sure of is that much of the appearance of the streets of the village will no longer be the same. Nor will the people be the same, that is already happening. Now they are simpler, less profound, I can perceive it in their gazes charged only with something I call "desire to possess and enjoy". They no longer observe, they no longer construct their inner world and therefore they are abstracted even from the same convulsive decadence that surrounds them and envelops them without remedy.

El pueblo se va borrando, diluyendo y yéndose lentamente... Estoy seguro de que en un par de décadas no quedará mucho del pasado para fotografiar aquí. El "Montalbán de antaño" se habrá muerto de soledad, desidia y tristeza. Para entonces (si Dios así lo permite) yo seré aún más viejo, ya entrado los 70 años, seguro haré otro tipo de fotos, no lo sé. Quizás solo seré un recuero en las cabezas de algunos aquí y un nombre en alguna lápida de nuestro muy mal conservado cementerio local. Eso lo dirá el tiempo, no yo. Pero lo de lo que sí estoy seguro es de que gran parte del aspecto de las calles del pueblo ya no será el mismo. Tampoco las personas serán iguales, eso ya está sucediendo. Ahora son más simples, menos profundas, lo percibo en sus miradas cargadas únicamente con algo que llamo "ganas de poseer y disfrutar". Ya no observan, no construyen su mundo interno y por lo tanto se abstraen incluso de la misma decadencia convulsa que les rodea y les envuelve sin remedio.

I don't really worry too much about the town losing its shape and turning into a slum full of ruins or "ugly" new constructions (because the aesthetic sense has also gone down the drain here lately). I think this is the natural evolution of a place where the vast majority of people have different priorities than preserving structures, heritage, traditions and the like. I mean, people here are simply trying to survive (the majority) or to get rich in any way they can (a few). But such "humanistic" things as ornament, culture, silence, creativity, art and good manners for example, are now "a matter of well-defined minorities" (very "minorities" indeed) and so are not a priority for a large sector of the population who simply "don't understand that and don't care"... I simply "see all this on the street", I mean about I write and not only in my photos.

En verdad no me preocupa demasiado esto de que el pueblo pierda su forma y termine por convertirse en un arrabal repleto de ruinas o de nuevas construcciones "feas" (porque también el sentido estético se ha ido al drenaje aquí últimamente). Pienso que es la evolución natural de un lugar en donde la inmensa mayoría de los seres tiene prioridades distintas a la de conservar estructuras, acerbo, tradiciones y cosas por el estilo. Me refiero a que aquí la gente simplemente está tratando de sobrevivir (la mayoría) o de enriquecerse de cualquier manera (unos cuantos). Pero cosas tan "humanistas" como el ornato, la cultura, el silencio, la creatividad, el arte y las buenas costumbres por ejemplo, son ahora "cuestión de minorías bien definidas" (muy "minorías" por cierto) y entonces no son prioridad para un amplio sector de la población el cual simplemente "no entiende eso ni le importa"... Yo simplemente, "veo todo esto en la calle", me refiero a lo que escribo y no solamente a mis fotos.

Gee, reading this I feel like an "endangered species" and also like a "compulsive nihilist". In a way both... A "madman with a camera in his hand" taking pictures in the streets of a decadent town and at the same time with his head full of certainties about the irreversible destiny of a place like this submerged in absences of light, in "flat" lives and excessively oriented to "simple existence" without creationism or introspection. Not for nothing did my late father say about me: "Jesus is the strangest man I have ever met in my life" (and he meant it, believe me).... But that's another story...

Caray, leyendo esto que he escrito me siento como una "especie en extinción" y también como un "nihilista compulsivo". De cierta manera ambas cosas... Un "loco con una cámara en la mano" haciendo fotos en las calles de un pueblo decadente y al mismo tiempo con la cabeza repleta de certezas sobre el irreversible destino de un lugar como este rincón sumido en ausencias de luces, en vidas "planas" y excesivamente orientadas a la "existencia simple" sin creacionismo ni introspección. No en balde mi difunto padre decía respecto a mi: "Jesús es el hombre más raro que he conocido en mi vida" (y lo decía en serio, créanme)... Pero esa es otra historia...

However (and to the relief of friends and strangers alike) I may wake up tomorrow, in a couple of days or perhaps a week, thinking in a completely different way to how I am thinking (and writing) today. Then I will probably wander the streets or the nearby fields in the morning fog and with the certainty that "all here is Ok", maybe I'll take some pictures of birds, breathe in the clean and pure air, ecstatic in the certainty that this is a nice place to be and that it will stay that way for a long time to come. Yes, that's the fun of being me!... I can just go from one extreme to the other without noticing it. But thanks to the fact that I write a lot of what I think (I don't publish everything, otherwise someone might have already come to beat me up) I can see how marked my swings in character, mood and thought are. I swear sometimes it's, when I read things I've written months or years ago, I think it's something written by someone else... Awww, but in a way it's an interesting experience.

De la manera que sea (y para alivio de propios extraños) puede que mañana, en un par de días o acaso una semana, yo me despierte pensando de una manera absolutamente distinta a como estoy pensando (y escribiendo) hoy. Entonces seguramente deambularé por las calles o los campos cercanos sumergido en la niebla mañanera y con al certeza de que "todo está bien". Quizás haga algunas fotos de aves, respiraré el aire limpio y puro, extasiado por la certeza de que este es un lugar lindo para estar y de que seguirá siendo así por mucho tiempo. Sí ¡Eso es lo divertido de ser yo!... Simplemente puedo pasar de un extremo al otro sin percatarme. Pero gracias a que escribo mucho de lo que pienso (no todo lo publico, pues de ser así quizás ya alguien habría venido a darme de palos) puedo percatarme de cuan marcadas son mis oscilaciones de carácter, animo y pensamiento. Juro que aveces es, cuando leo cosas que he escrito meses o años atrás, pienso que se trata de algo escrito por otra persona.... Awww, pero de cierta manera es una experiencia interesante.

And obviously, such a drama-filled (or perhaps I should say "ravings") post has to be accompanied with a monochrome view of these photos shared so far only in colour. So these are the Monochrome Versions for you...(Click thumbnail to enlarge)

Y obviamente, una publicación tan cargada de drama (o quizás debería decir "desvarios") tiene que estar acompañada con una visión monocromática de estas fotos compartidas hasta aquí solo en colores. As you can see, these are not pure black and white photographs, but a monochromatic style which I have come up with the idea of calling "Seipa Blu".

Como pueden apreciar, no se trata de fotografías en blanco y negro puro, sino de un estilo monocromático el cual se me ha ocurrido llamar "Seipa Azul".

This type of monochrome image is basically a photo processed from the RAW file for black and white to which I have added a sepia filter and then a blue attenuation layer with high transparency. In addition, after blending the layers, I readjust the levels until I get a result that I am satisfied with. I find it a very "vintage" way of looking at these photos.

Este tipo de imagen monocromática es básicamente una foto procesada desde el archivo RAW para blanco y negro a la cual le he agregado un filtro sepia y posteriormente una capa de atenuación azul con alta transparencia. Además, luego de fundir las capas, hago reajustes de niveles hasta obtener un resultado que me satisfaga. Me parece que es una manera muy "vintage" de mirar estas fotos.

ADDITIONAL TECHNICAL NOTE: Photographs captured with my Nikon D7000 DSLR camera in RAW format, then processed in Adobe Camera RAW for adjustments regarding light, sharpening, contrast and depth... They were then exported to JGP format on which minor modifications such as straightening and adding watermarks were carried out using PhotoScape 3.6.3.

NOTA TÉCNICA ADICIONAL: Fotografias capturadas con mi cámara DSLR Nikon D7000 en formato RAW, procesadas posteriormente en Adobe Camera RAW para ajustes relativos a luz, afilado, contraste y profundidad... Luego fueron exportadas a formato JGP sobre el cual se llevaron a cabo modificaciones menores como enderezado y agregado de marcas de agua usando PhotoScape 3.6.3.
