THIS HOT WEATHER AND YOUR HEALTH

The weather in Nigeria and possibly the greater part of Africa has been hot over the past few days, reading the temperature of about 38, to 40 degrees. This is not so healthy for the human population in these regions aa it can predispose to several disease and even injuries, some of which I 'm making this post as a part of this week's contest to share awareness and promote better healthy living even amid the heat.

The body has two components with which it uses to regulate heat, one is the Muscles and the other is the skin. In a cold, the muscles shake and shiver to generate heat while in the heat the skin releases water to create a cooling effect.

These mechanism are in place for good, but in an overdrive, they can result into even more severe insults to the body.

The weather being Hot these days means that more water will be lost via sweating and insensitive water loss when we breath and speak. This predisposes to dehydration and other sad conditions like heat rashes, measles, chicken pox and in people who may not have a good hygiene many more skin infections can be contracted and even spread around the populace.

Hence I advice the following

  1. Hand washing
Hand washing has been shown to prevent 70% of disease in the world, our hand touches many things that both goes into our body and also touches our skin especially the face. If it is well washed, and sanitized, it would cut of the transfer of many of these diseases and make us even healthier

  2. Drink Water
The daily water quota of everyone should be closely monitored and strictly followed, your water quota is depending on the BMI, weight, height and your level of activities, medical conditions and many other factors, None of it includes your love for water. On the average, about 4 to 5 litres for everyone, and even more if they are pregnant.

  3. Light clothings
Your clothing these period may not have to be overtly thick, you need breathable clothes and this is especially important for Nursing mothers who have babies this period. It is very important to encourage a more regular breast feeding and light clothing this period.

  4. Light Activities
You need to limit excessive outdoor activities this period in other to conserve your strength and limit the rate of sweating. Try to do more when the temperature is cooler and less when it is hotter.

  5. Know your body
Checking your temperature regular may be of minimal help, but if possible do it with a home thermometer, for accuracy, rather than just using the back of your hands. I recall a Doctor friend who is also a Nursing mother laughing at the way mother check the temperature of their babies.

  6. Take a shower
It is not too much to stop whatever you are doing to take a shower just to cool down your brain and body. It help bring back your body temperature, don’t do it in a hurry, take your time so that the cooling effect has a good time to kick in.

Above all, it is important to know your symptoms in this period so that you can know when to report to the health centres around you. Do not play down on symptoms like sorethroats, dizziness, cough, rashes, headaches, hotness, restlessness.

Other tips include using sunscreens, satying in shades, avoiding stress or cues, facilities show provide ACs for their customers and staffs as well.

I wish you all the best of health in this times.
Live Healthy Everyday.

Shower is a must, considering the hot weather. Having air conditioner is an added advantage.

Wow, I am just learning for the first time that our muscles shiver to generate heat; that's quite interesting.

Honestly, the weather has been nothing to write home about and we hope something is done about the global warming.
