Exploring the Historic Fortifications of World War I on Mount Brione: A Trek with Breathtaking Views

image.png

Hello dear friends,

Yesterday, I embarked on a very special journey near Lake Garda. I had been wanting to tackle this hiking route for a while, but bad weather had forced me to postpone it several times. So, I finally decided to dedicate myself to this adventure yesterday, and in less than three hours, I covered about 11 km—a considerable distance considering I wasn't very trained.

I ventured to discover the numerous Austrian fortifications from World War I located on Mount Brione, a hill between the towns of Riva del Garda and Torbole, in the wonderful Trentino scenery. This area is rich in history and natural beauty. My starting point was Fort San Nicolò, built in 1860, located near Riva del Garda, where I parked my car. I followed the Path of Peace, a recently created trail leading to Fort Garda, another imposing building that blends perfectly with the surrounding environment. From there, you can enjoy a spectacular view of Lake Garda, and this time I was lucky because I caught a beautiful day.

Continuing along a path through woods and fairly challenging stairs, you reach the middle battery, an artillery position, and then reach Fort Sant'Alessandro, the oldest of the complexes. Unfortunately, this site is closed to the public, but you can admire it only from the outside. Continuing the ascent, you practically reach the top of Mount Brione, where a majestic cross stands.
Parts of the forts are in a state of decay, indicating the limited appreciation of the area.

I must say it was a not too challenging trek in terms of elevation, but the trail was not well-maintained, probably due to bad weather. You can see that maintenance is limited, and few tourists pass through. However, these places deserve more valorization as they represent an important part of our history and are interesting structures to visit, I imagine even for school groups.

In addition to the historical aspect, taking a walk in these places allows you to admire the beauty of Lake Garda from a unique perspective. It's always nice to see the lake from above. I hope you enjoyed my story and that you can find inspiration to explore these wonderful places.

Incredible place, also very touching knowing the history behind it. I've never been there but I've seen other places in Italy, and the beaches where the llies landed in Normandy. So intense! Thank you for bringing us there, and for your beautiful pics 😊
Greetings from Sardinia ✌️

A spectacular place, I saw those pictures of some bunkers and it quickly reminded me of the bunkers I met in Albania (only in Albania there are a few thousand).

It's interesting how different regions have their own historical markers, each telling a story of the past.

That's right, but we're the only animal that hits the same stone twice. We only have to look around us and see that we are almost nothing away from World War III.

The adventure must be really satisfying. While I was reading and looking at the photos I was really amazed how much more if I was in the actual place. It's such an amazing and satisfying adventure.

I'm glad you enjoyed the virtual journey through the historical site! Exploring such places in person can indeed be a deeply satisfying adventure, allowing you to immerse yourself in the rich history and culture. If you ever get the chance to visit similar locations, I'm sure it would be an unforgettable experience.

Exactly. Being in the actual place than exploring virtually has a big difference. Photos really differs in reality because there is something that the camera can capture with what you can see in reality.

Those places that are genuine parts of history and resisted with the passage of time are the real gems of the world in my opinion. We have plenty of them surviving after various battles, but with a world becoming more mad, I am afraid they won't last forever as they should
