Mi aventura con el idioma portugués en Brasil. [Esp/Eng].

¡Saludos, comunidad de amantes de las letras!

En este emocionante capítulo de mi vida aventurera, estoy disfrutando plenamente la culminación de mi curso de extensión de portugués para extranjeros en la Universidad Federal de Roraima, aquí en la vibrante ciudad de Boa Vista, RR. Han sido cuatro meses de enriquecedora convivencia, compartiendo risas y aprendizajes con mis queridas profesoras: Solange, Marie y Aparecida.

Mi proceso de aprendizaje ha sido sencillamente magnífico. Más allá de adquirir un nuevo idioma, es un verdadero ejercicio mental que activa positivamente la memoria, la concentración y otras funciones cognitivas. Esta actividad diaria transforma mi vida cotidiana en gratificantes recompensas. ¡Qué maravilla es sumergirse y tratar de dominar otra lengua, especialmente el portugués! A mi edad, me encanta la idea de mantenerme activo mentalmente y, de paso, contribuir a prevenir enfermedades como el Alzheimer.

La rica historia del idioma portugués.

El portugués, como bien se sabe, pertenece a la fascinante familia de las lenguas romances o neolatinas. Estas lenguas son el resultado de la hibridez cultural del contexto europeo y, en particular, de la evolución del latín vulgar. Este latín era la variante hablada por los soldados, comerciantes y colonos del vasto Imperio Romano, cuya presencia cultural se hizo sentir en la Península Ibérica a partir del siglo III a.C.

Posteriormente, la invasión musulmana de la Península Ibérica en el siglo VIII tuvo un impacto significativo, especialmente en el castellano. Aunque el portugués también recibió influencia árabe, esta fue menos marcada que en el castellano, debido a la duración y la intensidad de la presencia musulmana en las diferentes regiones de la península.

Es evidente que el castellano y el portugués comparten una relación profunda, resultado de la evolución paralela de dialectos del latín vulgar en la Península Ibérica. Esta herencia común es palpable, y siento su parecido en sus respectivos contextos geográficos europeos, lo que los hace mutuamente inteligibles en gran medida. ¡Esto es especialmente relevante para nosotros en nuestra Amazonía suramericana!

Celebrando mi aprendizaje y la cultura local.

Estoy inmensamente satisfecho con esta labor emprendida. En este evento de cierre, tuvimos la oportunidad de compartir la deliciosa gastronomía de la región norte brasileña. Para la ocasión, llevé al aula universitaria mis arepas de coroba y unos dulces turrones de moriche (conocido como morichí aquí en portugués). Además, me he aficionado a la tapioca, que se elabora de manera similar al casabe, pero con el añadido de coco rallado. ¡Tiene una textura y un sabor verdaderamente espectaculares!

Aprovecho para mencionar que a este evento de cierre se unió el curso de extensión de la lengua española. Son dos cursos de idiomas predominantes en nuestra región fronteriza, lo que crea un ambiente de intercambio cultural fascinante. Durante el evento, me interesó especialmente conversar con uno de los participantes: un indígena Makuushi (este es el nombre correcto de su nación indígena).

Greetings, community of lovers of literature!

In this exciting chapter of my life, I am enjoying the culmination of my Portuguese language course for foreigners at the Federal University of Roraima in the vibrant city of Boa Vista. For the past four months, I have had the pleasure of sharing laughter and learning with my dear teachers: Solange, Marie and Aparecida.

My learning process has been magnificent. Beyond simply acquiring a new language, learning a foreign language is a real mental exercise that positively activates memory, concentration and other cognitive functions. This daily activity has transformed my life, and I am reaping the rewards of immersing myself in the language and trying to master Portuguese. As I grow older, I love the idea of staying mentally active and, in the process, helping to prevent diseases such as Alzheimer's.

The rich history of the Portuguese language.

As is well known, Portuguese belongs to the fascinating Romance or Neo-Latin language family. These languages are the result of the cultural hybridity of the European context, particularly the evolution of Vulgar Latin. This was the variant spoken by the soldiers, traders, and settlers of the vast Roman Empire, whose cultural presence was felt on the Iberian Peninsula from the 3rd century BC onwards.

The Muslim invasion of the Iberian Peninsula in the 8th century subsequently had a significant impact, particularly on Castilian. Although Portuguese was also influenced by Arabic, this influence was less pronounced than in Castilian due to the varying duration and intensity of the Muslim presence in different regions of the peninsula.

Clearly, Castilian and Portuguese share a profound relationship, resulting from the parallel evolution of Vulgar Latin dialects on the Iberian Peninsula. This common heritage is palpable, and I experience it in their respective European geographical contexts, which makes them mutually intelligible to a large extent. This is especially significant for us in the Amazon region of South America!

Celebrating my learning and the local culture!

I am immensely satisfied with this work. At the closing event, we had the opportunity to sample the delicious cuisine of northern Brazil. For the occasion, I brought arepas de coroba and turrón de moriche (known as morichí here) to the university classroom. I have also developed a taste for tapioca, which is made in a similar way to cassava but with grated coconut added. It has a truly spectacular texture and taste!

I would like to mention that the Spanish language extension course also attended this closing event. These two language courses are predominant in our border region, creating a fascinating atmosphere of cultural exchange. During the event, I was especially keen to speak to one of the participants, a Makuushi indigenous person.
