Sometimes we just have to give ourselves the thing we want.

For so many years I wanted partners who gave me flowers. Now, a part of me doesn't believe that it's necessary or even that good for the environment to buy store-bought flowers, but I still wanted them.

What I actually wanted was what that would represent to me: that a man loved me enough to buy me flowers.

Over time I've got better and better at realising that a healthy relationship isn't one where we endlessly project our needs onto another person and expect them to make us happy. Instead, it is to realise what we need and want, to ask for them, yes, but also be willing to have those needs/wants met in other ways.

Some of the things I need or want from my partner I can get from my friends or family. It might be a particular kind of conversation I'm looking for. Or more big hugs. Or business advice.

And sometimes the things I want I can simply give to myself. Like flowers.

We have a big garden and while we don't currently have a huge number of flowering plants, there are still a few.

This morning my favourite one (that works well in a vase, that is) needed pruning back from over the driveway. So as I walked around in bare feet, earthing and letting morning light into my eyes, I took the secateurs and chopped off a big bucket worth of small branches.

This included several suitable stems, lots and lots of luscious green leaves and a few lovely magenta coloured flowers. In the vase, they went. On the bench, they went. And on my happy way, I went!

And it leaves me wondering: is there something that you need or want that you could actually give to yourself? If so, tell me in the comments. I'd love to know.

I think what I have mostly realized as I age is that there are remarkably few things that I feel a need for or want of. Certainly, there are some things that would be nice to have but I'm quite content without them.

I don;t think I am in need of anything but to continue on my road of improving everyday as best I can. As far as want, I want to get healthier.

Interesting subject. I'm happy that you came to realise that you didn't need flowers from a man.
I've always been apprehensive about women's view on receiving flowers; Valentine's Day in particular.
A bunch of flowers from a man would have no impact on me. Yet, I enjoy buying myself fresh flowers, and would also put a single stem of fresh flowers in a vase to brighten my environment:)

    This is so Miley ♥️♥️

The tricky part is to know why you want what you want.

Many people actually perceive giving of flowers as a love language and they're neither right now wrong.

I like the realisation you came to in the end and moreover, now, you could get yourself flowers by yourself.✨

You're quite right, and I'd not only sometimes, but all the time! After all, the people we meet and the situations we encounter in our lives are also our manifestation, so if we receive something from the world, we're also giving it to ourselves however indirectly.

In recent years I've come to understand that in many occasions the difficulty resides in receiving what's being offered even if we've asked for it. It's a peculiar paradox. We have a saying in our country: "Matar al tigre y tenerle miedo al cuero", which roughly translates to "Killing the tiger but fearing the hide," a way of referring to the situation where we've already gotten what we wanted yet refrain from taking advantage of it.

Blessings! May you get many bouquets of wonderful, colorful flowers!
