September 24 2022 - Building shelters

Today I was on camp with our youth group where I volunteer as an adult leader. The challenge this weekend was to build a structure in the trees, all of the ground, to cook, eat and sleep in.

We found some suitable trees in the forest and then built a structure suspended of the ground using pioneering poles and rope. We covered it using tarpaulin sheets. We used a number of hammocks in the bed room area and built a kitchen.

For finishing touches we had a lot of decorations including decorative lighting.

It took about 6-7 hours to build.

It was a cold night but warm enough in the shelter.

We even uses an old ladder as a draw bridge that we could pull up off the ground.

Thanks, it was a lot of fun. The young people worked really hard and learnt loads.

It was great to be outside with nature.

It was a big challenge and we had to be quite creative. We thought a lot about the decorations for the shelter. We were just lucky it didn't rain over night!

Haha - I think it would have stayed up for a long time. It was very solid. We managed to sleep quite a few people inside over night.
