July Garden Journal : Getting back to good "Old-fashioned" Virtuous Methods

avatar

But is it really that old-fashioned ? I wonder, because at a time when there have never been so few farmers, at least in the Western world, isn't it terribly modern to go back to working by hand, on a small scale and for moderate needs ?

These were the thoughts running through my mind as I mowed our recently acquired plot of land with my partner for the first time.

This article invites you to follow what happened in the garden during this second session in the countryside...

IMG_8108.JPG

Let's start with three flowers, and of course I'm thinking of @dswigle and yesterday's missed #MarketFriday, but let's think of them as catch-up flowers, even if each flower is to be taken for what it is, a momentary beauty that is also timeless if you pay enough attention.

The first is a grass after the rain that didn't stop for two days in a row. I know that in some places it just doesn't rain enough, and believe me, I'm not complaining at all !

The second is a magnolia flower that was waiting for me when I arrived. It has since opened up completely and I find that strange because the tree had already bloomed completely this winter !

Finally, a bouquet of roses and the downside is that I mowed too close to this rose bush and, unfortunately, it died as a result ...

IMG_8024.JPG

IMG_8027.JPG

IMG_8038.JPG

That's the first thing I had to do during my few days in the countryside: clear out the back of this little hut. It took me a while, but you have to work hard against brambles. And it was rotting the wood on the facade. What's more, I was able to recover a lot of decomposing dead leaves, which will form the basis of my first permaculture mound !

IMG_8122.JPG

IMG_8124.JPG

Here's a view of the garden from the front of the house, at last it's stopped raining... No, I'm not complaining, it's just that I'll be able to get a bit more work done in the garden !

In the second picture, those in the know will recognize a sharpening stone, and this one is soaking in a bit of water to sharpen my scythe... The one my neighbour gave me on our first visit :) I think he sensed it, but it was probably one of the best things I could have given myself to start with ! That and the fact that I could go and borrow his tools at any time ^^.

IMG_8178.JPG

These were my weapons during the clearing of our two main and future vegetable growing areas. An XXL rake, unfortunately made of plastic, but devilishly effective, and a scythe from about fifty years ago. The latter isn't quite my size and we'll have to continue equipping ourselves anyway !

IMG_8125.JPG

IMG_8132.JPG

IMG_8135.JPG

Here are our first piles of herbs, which we are piling up as we go along to form our first mound, which isn't very visible yet but which will be in front of the little red greenhouse...

IMG_8151.JPG

IMG_8153.JPG

IMG_8155.JPG

A little focus on the tools and a comparison with the size of my boot, bearing in mind that I already have rather large feet !

IMG_8142.JPG

IMG_8149.JPG

IMG_8139.JPG

IMG_8150.JPG

IMG_8143.JPG

Finally, here's a bit more about the rest of the garden and the area around the forest that runs around and above our plot.

For the moment, it's not really built up, but as the garden has been abandoned for almost three years, we're mainly in clearing mode and if you have any solutions to get rid of the brambles, I'd definitely be interested ^^ !

I hope you've enjoyed and found this article interesting, and don't hesitate to share your initial feelings and advice! Thank you for visiting and have a lovely weekend :)

See you soon,

<3

Oh I'm so happy for you @anttn, what an amazing space, you sre going to have such a great garden here, I mean it's great already. With all that rain, plus blackberries as well.
I'm a bit envious I must say.
Looking forward to seeing you create your own garden here. Exciting times xxxx

Yeah, it's great already, but there is a balance to find between completely wild and too much humanized ! We'll work one that ;-)

I look forward sharing more in the futures, also about mistakes we'll inevitably make ^^

Take good care, I hope it's not to hot were you are !

It may take a lot of work to clean all that, but it seems like the location is strategic enough for some plants, such as chilies for example, but I can't be sure in your country

Hopefully it can be like what you hope to be in the future

First clear… and than observe.
Oh I can’t wait… hahaha to do it all our selves.

What a wonderful space! The only thing we lack is more time to play in the garden when we first arrive! Clearing is a huge job! Amazing how quickly things can become overgrown! The brambles are hard to get rid of, many people want to keep a few! I will never (I mean never!) have berries planted in a place they can keep growing. The only thing I can suggest, short of weed killer, which I won't do... is to cut them six inches from the ground and begin digging out the roots. That is what we did. Also, salt can be used. It will draw water from the nearby plants causing leaves (if applied by spraying) or roots (if watered in) to dry out and die. Good luck. It was miserable watching them take over everything. Although I love berries, the brambles were too much for me.

This is going to be such a beautiful place in time! It certainly is fun watching it happen!

Good luck and as always, #MarketFriday still loves you! 💜
:)

Yes, brambles can be a nuisance, but I think that before trying salt, which sounds like a really good idea! We'll try to uproot everything and keep the only ones that produce lots of berries :) Maybe make a stone enclosure for them (?)

I'd be interested to see a bit of your garden, and even photos of how it might have looked in the beginning and even the different stages! But first, we're off to Brittany hehe

I look forward to showing more as we progress, thanks again dear @dswigle, I wish you a lovely day and beautiful summer 😘

Working with hands is not an old fashioned method. Though, maybe, from your side, it's old-fashioned, but, over here in Nigeria, it's our only method of working.

The only farm machine we have here are: your hand, matchet, hoe and other farm equipments. Hahahaha.

You guys did lits of works. Keep it up. Hope you'll keep on updating us about the farmwork?

I know, and this old-fashion was a bit provocative and mostly turned to wester people who are basically lazy, well, most of them haha !

Definitely, I will continue to do some updates as soon we continue :)

Thank you dear @marajah 😉

I'm really convinced by that ! After, there is a balance to find, but exercise keep stronger than laziness !

Oh yeah! Finally you managed to start working on the garden! 😍
Sure, there's a lot of more things to be taken care of, but you have taken the first step. I'm so looking forward to future updates. That's going to be an interesting journey that I'm more than happy to humble along with you.
As for the brambles: the only way to get rid of them is to mow them over and over again I suppose... those guys are quite strong and durable; that's probably going to give you some work to keep them in order.

Yeahh 😊 Finally !

About the brambles, I think we'll cut them a lot of time and maybe try also to unroot some. Dswigle told me also about a technic with some salt... But we'll see !

Thank you for your enthusiasm, it will motivate us even more hehe :)

Have a good day and summer dear @aaskablackwolf !

you certain ly have your work cut out un-rewilding that little lot!!

But oh yes! the satisfaction you will get when you are aching and tired, but then reflect on the achievements you have made . AND it is more fun than going to the gym!

Hope we get regular updates

Hey dear @grindle ! Oh, yeah, this definitely the best gym we can imagine. Just a little dip in a pool would be perfect after that hehe :)

Hi, Anttn it seems you have to work hard to get your garden done according to your plan but you will do it, dear friend. Looking forward to seeing how it will be. hope your area has no ticks problem there. Take care and best of luck to all your plans 🌞🌱🌷

Oh, yeah ! The main idea is to plant the maximum and most diverse species of edible plants and vegetables, and fruit trees of course, but what is nice is that it will take place more in winter and early spring :)

Thank you @mnurhiver 😇

I think the only way to get rid of the brambles is work at digging them out and constantly keep on top of them! The clearing is the hard part - lucky youre nighbour's let you borrow tools. I'm sure you'll get a stock of tool supplies as you go.

My advice is to stick to your big plan - sommetimes we get caught up in the small things. I know when we started ours we had a heap of small sections rather than looking at big picture, which makes us laugh now!

Yeah, I think we'll follow the digging way hehe :) Some other people also told me about salt but I will first try by hand.

We're definitely lucky, all of our new neighbors are super gentle and this is really good thing !

I completely agree on your last advice, for me, a garden must follow a global plan and the first thing is to do the tracks, everything will come by after all :) I would be curious to see more of your garden, maybe you can eventually send me some on Discorde hehe

I wish you a lovely day dear 😘
