Every Path is an Eternal Beginning - Hiking in the Forest of Fontainebleau

avatar

Hi there dear Hivers, I hope you had a good weekend ! It's probably a good sign, but I find myself in the forest more and more often for walks of varying lengths. Even more after having enjoyed the spiced hot wine, it's a also great idea !

If there's one thing most of us really miss, it's more in-depth and frequent contact with Nature and its wonders. Each path and turn is unique, and that's exactly what I felt during this walk of a few hours in a corner of the Fontainebleau forest that I didn't know.

DSC_2121.JPG

It's winter here in France and in Europe, but frankly, it was quite mild that day, around 10°C... It's a far cry from the winter frosts you might find further east or north.

DSC_2127.JPG

DSC_2125.JPG

Some corners seem more obscure and damp, with twisted trees covered in moss. I kind of like it, it feels like an untouched forest, not to say a primordial one. The fact is, this forest has been much modified by man, particularly for hunting since the Renaissance.

DSC_2131.JPG

Here, the family group, with whom the gap will only widen as I make quite a few stops ! The family dachshund is trying to hold things together, but that's just because we're at the start, as he'll be dropping out along the way !

DSC_2143.JPG

DSC_2141.JPG

One of the inseparable elements of this walk is the moss, which is omnipresent. Actually, I should say mosses, as there are many different types, but to realise that, you have to get up close and take a closer look...!

DSC_2135.JPG

A modest find: this fragment of ceramic tile, whose pattern I quite like and which I could see in a kitchen behind a sink, for example !

DSC_2146.JPG

DSC_2156.JPG

The road continues, with lots more details to look at...

DSC_2158.JPG

DSC_2159.JPG

As we come to a crossroads, it's time for a little history on the names of the signs that indicate the paths through the forest. In the period closest to our time, Napoleon had a large part of this forest reforested and, as well as modifying the paths, he had some of them renamed to reflect the high points of his battles and military campaigns. That's why we find Warsaw, for example, even though it's several thousand kilometers away.

DSC_2169.JPG

DSC_2166.JPG

Here, one of the only beech trees that still has its leaves, and what leaves they are ! The magnificent light at the back allows you to fully appreciate their golden color !

DSC_2185.JPG

DSC_2188.JPG

Here we are a little further on, in a higher area dominated by pine trees. But even without the leaves, with the clues lying around on the ground, you can tell that there are also chestnut trees in the area.

DSC_2190.JPG

DSC_2191.JPG

Obstacles litter our route, whether they be vegetation or the relief of the landscape...

DSC_2200.JPG

A semi-open cave, but a sign warns of the risk of falling rocks... I'm still recovering from my back, so now's not the time to take unnecessary risks to take a photo of the rocky floor with a flashlight ^^.

DSC_2209.JPG

DSC_2211.JPG

DSC_2210.JPG

It's the area of the piles of stones at the top of these reliefs and I don't know why, probably because of the similarities in the colors and the rocks, but I think directly of the paths taken by the Fellowship of the Ring in the first part of the books or the films trilogy.

DSC_2215.JPG

Not a lot of mushrooms to be seen, but if you look hard enough - especially for decomposing logs - you'll be sure to find some !

DSC_2224.JPG

DSC_2222.JPG

Puddle mirror, alternately sharp or blurred...

DSC_2248.JPG

DSC_2257.JPG

And here we are, still further along the road, and as you can see in the second image, the ground on the paths is often made up of light-colored sand from the dominant rock in the forest, sandstone, itself a distant remnant of the ocean sands that once lay there...!

DSC_2239.JPG

DSC_2243.JPG

DSC_2267.JPG

Plant details, fresh or dry, always lying in ambush by the roadside...

DSC_2268.JPG

DSC_2270.JPG

The moss, an indicator of shade and humidity, continues to accompany us along our journey...

DSC_2311.JPG

DSC_2291.JPG

There are still some leaves, but it's easy to see that the first are from a chestnut tree... as for the second, well, I'll have to check that out !

DSC_2314.JPG

A wooden knot like an eye watching over the end of our path.

DSC_2319.JPG

Here, one of the last botanical encounters with this Fragon false holly or Ruscus aculeatus...

DSC_2325.JPG

DSC_2328.JPG

DSC_2331.JPG

But the last one, and the one we'll finish with, is this charcoal tree with its beautiful little fruits, whose colour contrasts sharply with the light green foliage...

That's the end of the road, and I hope you enjoyed sharing it with us! I'd like to thank you for reading and visiting our site, and wish you all the best for the start of the week ! Take care of yourselves,

<3

<3

I hope the place is warm enough and all the windows close well at night with no places for the chilly wind to come in spoil a good night sleep.
What heating system are you implementing for your place?

The windows are old but still functional, hopefully 😅 !

We installed a wood stove one month or so ago.. Until now, we slept very nicely but it's sometimes a bit cold in the morning haha !

Oh be careful with that chilly wind we can never be too careful with the cold winter breeze that we least need it while we are asleep.

I have to say quite an incredible walk. 10 degree C is OK as long as it is not too windy.
I feel for those not familiar with that part of the forest taking the main route seems to be the best route to take.
By the way does wifi work for you in the forest area so that one could use the navigation app on the phone?
Though I have some funny experiences of using the navigation app in the heart of Paris so I would be careful and take its instruction with a pinch of salt.

Hello Hivers! What a delightful adventure you had in the Fontainebleau forest. Your description of the winter day, the mild weather, and the unique atmosphere of the forest paints a vivid picture. The images you've shared, especially those of the twisted trees covered in moss, give a sense of the mystical beauty of the place.

It's heartwarming to see your family, including the family dachshund, enjoying the walk. Indeed, every path in nature has its own charm and uniqueness. The untouched and primordial feel you describe adds a special touch to the experience.

Thank you for taking us along on your journey through the forest.

Yes, unfortunately all the snow melted already, but it should be colder soon, so let's hope that it will come back 😊 And now I learned a few new words! Now Swiss fondue makes much more sense as I learned what 'fondu' means 😂

Incredible !!! I just didn't knooow 😀 ! So funny 😅

That great ! I'm a a bit - too much - of a collector... or a collector of collection which is quite dangerous haha !

But more recently, I've been concentrating on a collection of bells. Maybe I can show that in the coming times :)

A forest with an ancient history... Goodness Europe blows my mind. I always think of our antecedents walking ghostly paths before us.

I was speaking to someone in Portugal and they are saying a 30 degree day is on forecast? That's crazy. Ten degrees certainly seems warm for December!

I love finding bits of old ceramic. I always want to collect enough for a mosaic or press them into the edges of a wet concrete path. They often have more charm that the original unbroken piece.

Yes, I often imagine them walking alongside us and sometimes even diverting our paths a little ;)

In fact, they alternate between very cold days and warmer days that are completely out of season! But 30 in Portugal is crazy !

They often have more charm that the original unbroken piece.

It's so true most of the tile 😅
