At the top of the world, where the sky merges with the earth and the wind, whispers stories of ancient and daring adventurers; there lies my lonely soul. My heart beats to the rhythm of adventure, meditating on the edge of the abyss. Surrounded by towering cliffs and clouds dancing in an ethereal embrace, I contemplate the vast horizon stretching before me.

“What am I looking for?” I ask myself, as my voice echoes off into the vastness. “Is it the freedom that distance promises, or the promise of discovering who I really am?” Only those who have walked the narrow mountain range from La Silla to Pico Oriental in Waraira Repano National Park (El Ávila) will know what it feels like to reach Pico Naiguatá and experience true freedom.

Each pedal has been a challenge to monotony, an act of rebellion against the routine that consumes the spirit. Here, I find myself suspended between heaven and earth. Every breath is a declaration of independence, every glance an encounter with the unknown.

“The office, that grey cubicle, artificially cooled and filled with technology; it now seems a distant memory,” I reflect… “There, where the days fade away in a sea of papers and screens, I have left a part of me that I no longer need.”

Many will say that I am facing the immensity of the unknown, “well, dare”, the terrifying and magnificent beauty of nature, “what are you doing glued to the screen investing so much of your life”. “I could go back,” I mused. “Back to safety, to predictability. But something inside me resists, something that longs for more than my comfort zone.”

So, in the solitude of the mountain, I find clarity. Life is not meant to be repeated, but to be discovered every day. Not to be observed, but to be lived with intensity, with all its unexpected twists and turns. “The loneliness I experience fills me, the loneliness behind the screen overwhelms me.”

As I stand firm on that precipice, on the border between my old life and new beginnings, for the first time in a long time, I feel deeply awake. “Come on, give it a try…”

This image captures a lone cyclist on a mountaintop, surrounded by swirling clouds and birds flying below him, embodying an intense moment of reflection amidst breathtaking natural beauty that underscores humanity's innate desire for adventure beyond mundane existence.

That's how it is to crumb. When I was young I climbed to about 2500 meters, I went above the height of the clouds in Caracas, so the image brought back many memories…

It is not easy to reach these places on foot, but when you do, the moment is truly eye-opening. Thank you for your thoughtful reflection.

Beautifully written. It reminds me of the man I met on the bus hiding in France to start his journey to the South alone. He took a few months off from work or the film I watched about a girl - without any experience - walking a trail alone to find herself.

You described that feeling very well and the need to be alone to find oneself (back).

Thank you for joining pic1000. 👍

The change of routine is a good stress reliever, but most people are afraid, not to say lazy, to step out of their comfort zone.

Thank you, my friend, I am pleased with your reply. I have personally experienced part of the story, I have been to those heights on foot (no bike), the feeling of freedom is just as I describe it. We have to be there to experience it personally.

How exhilarating @amigoponc to be able to undertake such a journey of discovery.

I love how you put it:

"Life is not meant to be repeated, but to be discovered every day."

Many desire to leave the everyday drudgery whether it be career or the content of their daily lives for whatever reason. A weekend perhaps just to break the monotony. However, few individuals can accomplish this for any extended length of time without funds to undertake this type of adventure. If unable to travel to experience new things, just doing something different I understand can be exciting.

I also liked how you describe the nature surrounding you and the feeling of being on the mountain. I can visualize it without ever looking at the contest photo. Now, that's an enjoyable read and a job well done.

Thanks for sharing. Take care.

When I was young, during the school holidays, specifically the whole month of August, we organised a mixed group of boys and girls and spent about fifteen days crossing El Ávila from south to north, “The Ávila, today known as Waraira Repano National Park”, located in the northern mountain range of Caracas-Venezuela.

The excursion took place every year and I managed to keep it up for twelve years. The groups that accompanied me, no less than 10 in number, learned to share with nature. Everyone played a role in the excursion, some carried food, others medicines and cooking implements, others tense… I always had a weatherproof folder where I kept the authorisations of the parents and representatives of the children, everyone's documentation and the IMPARQUES permit. I also carried my camera, radio communicator (mobile phones were not available at that time), plans and my staff.

When the boys passed through a kind of mist and emerged at the top, wet, they realised that they had passed the height of the clouds. Looking down, they saw as if Caracas was covered with white cotton wool. We always reached the top of Pico Naiguatá “2765 metres”. From the peak, with the favour of nature and clear skies, we could see 180 degrees how the sky of Caracas merged with the horizon of the Caribbean Sea.
