Nothing but Miseries

“Courts” are the place where people are supposed to reach whenever their rights are usurped and they are in search of justice. However, in a country like mine, where justice system is corrupt, courts do nothing but adding to the sufferings of victims. In my country there is a mantra I have often heard, “May God save everyone from hospitals and courts.” These two places are for serving humanity but the corruption in the fields has lead us to pray for the protection from them. Courts actually facilitate those who have something to fill the pockets of people sitting in and around the courts.

I have heard of several cases among my relatives where courts did nothing but wasting their time and money. They added financial and emotional burden let alone not giving them the justice. It gives me immense pain to see things happening in unjustified way. There is a very famous case happened in my country where a Superintendent of Police couldn’t take justice for the murder of his son. The case continued for years ending up releasing the murderer.

There was another case that sounds funny but it is very shameful and a blot on the justice system of the country. A vegetable wanderer was arrested for something and put in jail for a week. His family took the case to the court. What happened the next is seriously ridiculous. The case prolonged. The man who was supposed to be out of the prison in seven days had to live inside for five years. Only because the case was taken to the court and the court proceedings are slower than a snail. They just keep on giving dates after dates for hearings.

One of my relatives is a high ranked doctor in a government hospital. He was the head of a team that raided fake doctors and clinics in the country side. He did his work with diligence and bravery. He refused to take bribe in return of removing the proofs. However, his witness meant nothing when the case was heard in the court. Fake doctors were released. The bribe that was offered to him would have reached in the pocket of the judge.

Another case I heard among our relatives. The land owner wanted to vacate his house from the tenant while the tenant wasn’t leaving even after the due date of the contract. The case was taken to the court and alas! The tenant took the stay order. The case proceeded for years and now the landlord didn’t have the right to took the tenant out of his house unless the court would allow him to do so.

I haven’t ever been to court and I pray to God to save us all from this traumatic place. Some years ago, my father had to go to the court for justice. How such a place can provide justice where you have to bribe every small authority to reach to the court room to tell your rights are usurped. From the watchman of the court to other people in between were to give some money to if he had to reach to the judge that day. The fees of lawyer was another financial burden. Besides, on every hearing there was always something in which there was a need to spend money. My father’s hard earned money was going in vain. The case proceeded for one and a half year without any logical decision. It would have proceeded longer or my father might have to withdraw (because the justice was not likely to come) if he was alive. My father died suddenly out of an unknown disease. We were already in trauma, people advised us to take the case back and so we did. It was of no use to proceed it when it was evident that justice won’t be given to us by the court.

I am extremely sorry to conclude that the courts in my country are to protect the crimes of affluent and influential people. They do not have justice to mitigate the sufferings of the poors and victims. What about the courts in your country?

For gone are the days when the court is where people go to fight for their right.
