One of my favorite things to do when visiting new cities is to search for the interplay between nature and the world of humankind. Finding these moments, as that the photographer did in the picture prompt, is like finding hidden gems in between the cracks of the pavement.

It also serves as a great meditative practice as the simpler interplay of animal behaviors can pull you out of your mind, pull you into a state of pure observance, forgetting thought and just living through the feeding city wildlife.

In a way these moments of observing nature in a manmade habitat are a metaphor for the act of writing, particularly writing poetry. The process of composing poems is like picking out nuggets of truth from a landslide of chaotic moments. Sifting through the cacophony of opinion and artificial concern to find what seeds the soul, the glimmering payload at the bottom of the pan.

I think this is why many writers are guarded with their time and space, this is certainly the case for me. It is not that they're unsociable, or disconnected from the world, rather that without distance it is impossible to get a true picture.

“Writers are as jealous as pigeons.”

― Anton Chekhov

Chekhov is right 😂 and I'd extend that metaphor to say that writers have to be like pigeons constantly pecking at everything to find what is edible. Examining ideas, people's conversations, different words to best describe a scene and studying things to find the underlying feeling that they inspire beyond thought.

This is why I've always struggled in a traditional nine to five setting, I'm always jealous of the time that is taken from writing or observing to write.

First world problems eh!🤣

The haiku in this post attempts to capture what Japanese Haiku masters call Mono no aware (物の哀れ):

an empathy with nature and human life; the "feeling of things", nostalgia, regret for the passing of time, understanding of the changeability and of the transience without suffering.

Along with Karumi (軽み):

beauty in simplicity; poetic beauty reflected in its simplicity, free from preconceptions and moral judgment.

I have decided to challenge myself for a month to post a daily Haiku on Hive. Each week will have a different theme based on a picture prompt.

This week's broad theme is Reflection on Nature.

Ha ha, thank you @agmoore

I've enjoyed writing these haiku blog posts, and truthy I've needed to post daily this month to add to funds to pay off a large 2k debt that caught up with me, but these haiku posts are my farewell to hive. And it seems that decision is the right one, as a sum total of 9 real people (not bots) have read and commented over the last 28 days.

Anyway, you know my story... I can't (and won't) hang around wasting my limited well-time and creativity on a blockchain where the vast majority of whales and orcas scratch each other's backs and some reward absolute cack. There is an argument that esthetically, it devalues quality writing through association.

The straw that broke the camels back for me was spending months on leofinance writing an assortment of creative crypto centric content, to finally realize that it didn't matter how well what I wrote was researched, or framed... crap three paragraph posts like this one would continue to make top $$$. There are many shitposters out their like that who are constantly devaluing the platform, by extracting large $$$ value at the expense of the decent writers on here. It really is laughable 🤣

Anyway, I might do one more week of haiku posts just to finish the month of May out and then I'm gone. At least I've taken a £300 chunk out of my debt. It is about all I've ever taken out of hive so far.

Your encouragement and feedack has meant a lot to me over the years. All the best. 🙂

Hello my friend,
You know I will always have a soft spot for you, @raj808--not because you are a good writer, but because you have always been kind and thoughtful to me. Also, because I believe we share a lot of the same values, though more than a generation and thousands of miles separate us.

I explain my Hive rationale here. Of course I have fun. I'm in the waning years (they've actually waned) of my life and find this sort of engagement is one of the few I can manage with little limitation. There is another reason I hope for the success of Hive. It represents opportunity to people who see no path out of economic difficulties. There are a few coins to be made with only the investment of time. This is a great help to some people. Hive is an economic system that has value for some (as you were able to extract some money recently).

If you ever come back or want to touch base, your elderly lady friend will be here, as long as life allows.

With fondness,
AG

Yes, you're right. And good friends and like minds are one of the best things hive has gifted me.

It represents opportunity to people who see no path out of economic difficulties. There are a few coins to be made with only the investment of time. This is a great help to some people. Hive is an economic system that has value for some (as you were able to extract some money recently).

I do agree, but unfortunately due to one reason or another I never got on the radar of people who could allow me to improve my situation markedly, in the part of the world where I live. For sure post payouts are helping raise people up in parts of the world where poverty is much more so than where I am. And I am glad that it does help people out of poverty in Africa and South America, but I have to think of myself! I'm living in a one room apartment, with chronic illness and no spare money to try alternative treatments. Hive will never help me out of my position of poverty as it stands now. The dream I had of earning some type of living writing on steem/hive has been well and truly tested 😂 I've been smashing my head against that 'metaphorical' brick wall for nearly 4 years now and if it ain't happened my now it never will.

I've really done a deep dive on the economics of hive, and unless some things change around here it will never become anything more than a niche platform. There is so much goes on behind the scenes that you wouldn't believe. Lol, some of it might make good material for a novel, although I'm not sure how I would make virtual politicking interesting to read on the page 🤣

I tend to stress when I see humans replicating the same old negative behaviors that have gone before over and over again. It depresses the hell out of me to watch it. From my perspective, it just isn't worth it anymore; financially, or for my physical/mental wellbeing. I worked it out once, and what I earn on here came well below minimum wage.

Anyway, I will always answer a DM from you on discord Agmoore. You can get hold of me on there for sure. Might just take me a week to respond now I'm taking a digital detox from online stuff for a bit. I'll be checking in every week to ten days, just want to train myself out of being a junkie for my phone and online activities. Hopefully that training will translate into more reading of books, and some positive plot planning and work on longer fiction projects.

Books are the source of our talent, although we forget that sometimes. Reading is how we all became writers. I wish you the peace you need to achieve your goals my friend.

Hey Rowan (@raj808)!

Long time, my friend. I was @blockurator on Steemit. Been absent for over a year and finally getting back into the swing of things. Good to be back and would love to read more of your great poetry.

Hi m8.

Lol, I decided to leave hive about a month ago and power down. Unfortunately this place can become very addictive and I am not great with focus. The only way for me to move on to larger mainstream writing projects was a clean break. I am now 100% focused on other projects.

I watched your van life vlog nearly a week ago and it is awesome what you're doing. All the best. It seems I'm pretty much at the point you got to with steem well over a year ago. It is unlikely I will be logging on to hive again for a few weeks lol

Take care m8

Say @raj808. I'm glad you're working on bigger projects. If you do see this post, it's great to see you're writing again. Maybe our paths will cross. Did I mention I'm writing a book on #crypto?
