What I've been watching

avatar

We each have our own tastes in TV. I am not particularly into gritty dramas and documentaries. I prefer some escapism and do not watch as much as some people, so I am fairly selective. I also like music documentaries. Here are some of the things I have been watching lately and some I will be watching.

Get Back

When The Beatles got together to record what would be their last album it was planned to film the process and stage some sort of performance after they have previously given up touring. Director Peter Jackson got access to all the film and recordings to produce about eight hours of reality TV with one of the biggest bands ever. What we see is a group of very talented, but otherwise ordinary guys who enjoy making music and could be as chaotic as any pub band.

I would say it could have been shorter as some parts drag a bit, but there are so many jewel in there as we them actually put some of the great songs together whilst also jamming on loads of others just for fun. I really enjoyed it.

Only Murders In The Building

Apparently Steve Martin has not made a TV series before, but now he has with his old friend Martin Short and Selena Gomez. They start a podcast based around a murder in the building they all live in.

It is a light comedy that we enjoyed. There are various plot twists to keep it interesting and it seems there may be another season.

Another comedy my other half and I enjoy is Young Sheldon. It can be soppy, but I think it is well written and acted.

Free Guy

This Ryan Reynolds action comedy is good fun. There are elements of the Lego Movie and The Truman Show as a non-player character in a video game gets to break out of his loop. I am not a gamer, so I will miss various references and I did not recognise the vloggers who feature, but we still enjoyed it.

Hawkeye

As with the shows above this is on Disney+ and continues a run of shows spun off from the Marvel movies. I just watched the finale today. I found a video filling in lots of details with the links to the comics that I have not read. I would say that is not essential as you can enjoy the show for what it is, although it will help to have seen the movies.

There are a load more Marvel shows and movies coming up. It can be hard to keep track of it all.

This video is full of spoilers, so do not watch until you are ready for it.

What's Next

The next few things I want to watch are on Netflix. I have started on Marvel Defenders that unites characters who each had their own shows. The only one of those I have already watched is Iron Fist. I may go back and watch the others later, but I can live with not knowing all the back-stories.

Just out are new seasons of Lost In Space and The Witcher. I have watched an episode of the former already. I did say I like escapism.

There is so much I could watch, but I have to accept I will not watch everything.

My better half does not watch all of these, so I end up seeing some on the secondary TV in the study or the PC. I did just get hold of a better subwoofer for the basic surround system we have in the living room and I finally figured out how to actually get Dolby Surround to the amplifier rather than just stereo, so I hope to be able to enjoy a more immersive viewing experience with some of these shows. We will be busy over Christmas, so I may have to wait a while for that. No doubt we will be watching various movies and seasonal specials whilst eating too much chocolate.

I wish you all a merry Christmas etc. Do not forget to drag yourself away from the various screens to do other things such as getting outside.

Get Back is great. First half of part 2 for me. They’re so relatable and likeable. Really remarkable that this archived footage found a new home and audience. Loving it so far!

Not seen any of the other shows on your list but I think my wife has. We have pretty different taste in TV and films generally, which is isn’t a bad thing.

We watch some things together, but we diverge on others. Now and again we will enjoy a movie. She has watched some of the Marvel stuff, but not enough to follow who everyone is.

Also this kind of post might go well in the ‘Movies and TV Shows’ community :)
A healthy scene over in that community, so to speak.

The only one of those I’ve seen is Free Guy. I thought it fun, imaginative, and bonkers - I liked it. As I haven’t seen the Lego Movie I didn’t make that association, and even though I am a gamer, I only recognised a couple of the vloggers. Really want to see Get Back.

Just bing-watched The Witcher after seeing the first series again as a refresher, and found it quite immersive. Enjoy! And remember to toss a coin! 😁

Merry Christmas to you and yours. 🎄 🥳

The visual effects in these movies are just amazing these days, so anything can happen. I know games are improving, but may not quite be like reality yet.

I have actually sung the Toss a Coin song a few times at the pub :) I'll get to the Witcher soon.

Merry Christmas!

Just finished watching Hawkeye myself and really enjoyed it. As far as the Netflix Marvel shows it seems you’re watching the ones that I didn’t! If you do decide to go for some of the earlier series, I’d still highly recommend the first couple seasons of Daredevil to most anyone, although it does skew more into the gritty crime drama genre so might not be quite what you’re looking for.

I saw some of Daredevil and Jessica Jones when my son was watching them. They did seem pretty gritty. There are just so many hours of viewing to catch up on. We are a bit saturated with Marvel content lately, so it's nice to watch something else for a change.

Hope you have a great Christmas.

I’m planning to catch up on these. Music is an interest of mine, so love the behind the scenes stuff, especially as I used to photograph live music in the early noughties.

I’m going to get out over Christmas for some much needed fresh air and photography.

I haven't seen any of those shows. Free guy sounds interesting to me and I'm sure that I'll watch Hawkeye at some point because we follow the Marvel series. We may even go see the new Spider-Man movie this holiday.

I just picked up Disney + the other day and I am hoping to get some of these Marvel sohws watched at some point. My wife and I just finished the latest season of The Sinner and we have now moved on to the latest season of Hanna. If you get a chance, watch Maid on Netflix. It was good. I am watching Wheel of Time on Amazon Prime right now and getting ready to start the latest season of The Witcher.

I've not heard of Sinner or Hanna, but I did hear Maid was a bit bleak. We just have Disney+ and Netflix. It is interesting that we can watch some of the same things wherever we are now. Lost in Space and The Witcher will keep me busy for a while along with stuff I watch with the family.

Have a great Christmas.

Maid was a bit bleak, but it was really good. Sinner is pretty bleak too, so you likely wouldn't like that. Hanna is a series that is based off the movie of the same name.

I haven't watched any of these or even heard of most of them. Thanks for the tips!

There's so much stuff out there is hard to keep up. It's all just entertainment, so find something to enjoy.
