Atheists More Likely to Own a Cat than Church-Goers šŸˆ

ā–¶ļø Watch on 3Speak

According to a new article in the Journal for the Scientific Study of Religion, by Samuel L.
Perry (University of Oklahoma) and Ryan P. Burge (Eastern Illinois University), thereā€™s a
statistically significant correlation between how often you go to church and how many pets you own. And the more you go to church, the less likely you are to own a cat. The researchers suggest the answer may lie in social behaviors. If you attend church and are already part of a social group, perhaps you have less of a need for pets. But if youā€™re not religious, you might not have a larger social group you see regularly, and therefore youā€™re more likely to have a cat or dog.

@atheistrepublic, This sounds very unique Research and surprising too. In my opinion most important aspect of life is spreading Love and Kindness and we have to respect and protect other creatures too, that's the true sign of Humanity. Stay blessed. šŸ™‚

This is an odd one, but every statistician will say that correlation does not mean causation. We have a cat and are all atheist in our house, but @mildredcat probably does think we worship her. Now I'm thinking about who I know with a cat. I know one pagan with a cat, but most of my friends are not particularly religious as far as I know. It just doesn't tend to come up in conversation.

I don't know about this statistics but honestly this isn't significant in the Society where I came from infact going to church doesn't preach against the phenomenon of having cats I don't know about this and infact I know a lot of people who own pets and cat and still go to church. It's however strange that this seems like a significant statistics

I don't know about the States, however in Nigeria very few people will own a cat because of religious superstition, they believe that they are used by witches. lol.

We'll, it may apply to me, my cat is black to cap it all. Now I am curious. I may start my own survey, see if it applies.
Most people I know define themselves as believers, even if they do not attend church regularly, which is typical in Venezuela. Most people I know own some pet.
I will pay more attention now.
In any case this may not be that relevant.
As a theory, I'd say a truly religious person may have a hard time establishing a close relation with an animal. Animals were given to man for his use and control, not to socialize. Also, animals, if loved too much, may distract the believer's attention from what really matters, true devotion and piety. Who knows.

Obviously a slow news day in the world of atheists.

That's an interesting bit of research @atheistrepublic, and whereas there's potentially some correlation there, I have a feeling the conclusions drawn from the data are a little "off," at least with respect to cats.

More likely, this sounds like an extension of a very old truism: "Dogs are the choice of politicians, soldiers and lawyers; cats are the choice of artists, poets and dreamers."

How is that significant? Churches and religions are ultimately control mechanisms and the root psychological profiles of people who are willing to be (or exert) controlled are more in alignment with dogs, who are highly trainable and controllable, while cats are very independent and pretty much do "their own thing, on their own time," perhaps more in alignment with the root psychology of someone who rejects dogma and structure.

Just thought I'd submit that, for consideration!

I can believe it, many atheists are vegan as well so they are very kind to animals

Ha-Ha that is an interesting finding, but it is quite self explanatory, love is a very basic need one loves the 'God' and other the cat....
