El Diablo Restaurant - A Tasteem Review

I mentioned in a separate post that we ate on the peak of Mount Timanfaya in the El Diablo Restaurant, and with @meesterboom recently visiting I thought this would be a good time to reveal the facts if you decide to eat here.

IMG_0493.JPG

We arrived in mid-afternoon and so it was not too busy for diners.

Everyone appears to want to eat at noon, whereas we eat when we are hungry.

IMG_0492.JPG

Capturing a shot of the outside was tough as there were too many tourists loitering around, some of them my family members.

IMG_0462.JPG

Before entering you can see where they cook the meat and that they are using the natural resources of the volcano to do so.

The chicken looked quite raw at this point; I think they had just removed the last stash.

IMG_0482.JPG

IMG_0483.JPG

There was not much of a wait and we managed to grab a table next to the window with an amazing view.

There would be repercussions in doing so, however.

IMG_0470.JPG

IMG_0471.JPG

I zoned into the ‘Meat Heated by the Volcano’ section like a right old tourist!

IMG_0473.JPG

It wasn’t too badly priced and we ordered THREE Half Grilled Chickens at 13EU each.

Noticing there were no chips provided with the main, we also grabbed some as an extra for 3EU.

IMG_0469.JPG

So far so good, but where was this damn food?

Service was a little slow but as we were all hungry the time seemed to drag on.

I thought volcanoes were hot, so why the delay?

IMG_0481.JPG
...'sticking your hand here is a bad idea, unless you want to add your own hand meat to the menu'...

At one point I uprooted, walked to where they were cooking the meat and noticed some progress. It was cooking or the chicken seemed to be.

IMG_0476.JPG

We got the chips first, they were quite decent and most disappeared down @dismayedworld’s throat before we got a look in.

The chicken was not far behind but it didn’t look too appetising. I could see from the first moment it appeared dry.

IMG_0487.JPG

It tasted better than it looked but was as visually suggested.., overcooked which ruined the experience somewhat.

I would have thought by now they would realise what setting that volcano has unless it changes daily!

IMG_0464.JPG

The other problem was that although the outside temperature was a modest 18C, sitting next to the window was hot so much that I had to move into the shady seats.

IMG_0486.JPG
...'the view was fabulous but it was just too bloody hot to sit here'...

@bingbabe got stuck there and as much as I offered to switch with her she was defiantly sticking it out and visibly sweating.

IMG_0491.JPG

this kind of thing doesn’t bother me’, she boasted with a look of superior defiance. Yeah right, so what’s that on your neck!

The accompanying Salsa, Tomato and Baked Spud with a large blob of Garlic sauce were nice but without those chips, I feel we would have left slightly hungry.

IMG_0478.JPG

Ordering a dessert was out the question. It was too hot in there!

Being where this is located they could have used some air conditioning, I mean they must do in the summer months or everyone would fry.

IMG_0490.JPG

52EU for three in a tourist trap is not too bad I suppose.

The gimmick of having your food cooked by a natural furnace is quirky but it was not the best food I have had.

IMG_0475.JPG

I would say El Diablo Restaurant is not a bad place to eat, it’s not like there are many choices on top of a volcano so if you are hungry it's question of eat or starve.

Just avoid the Chicken unless you like your food ‘well done

That is pretty awesome that they use the volcano like that. Chicken is trick you know. I would rather have chicken that is over cooked than raw. Salmonella doesn't sound fun at all to me. If it is too dry you can always dip it in some ranch :) Perhaps you should send them an instant read meat thermometer. They are right around $5 USD on Amazon :)

Ranch is hard to get outside the UK, you can find it but it's hardly mainstream. People don't know what's good for them, it's the best dressing and they don't know what it is.

Indeed! I know it is probably a very American thing to put ranch on everything. I enjoy ceasar dressing room and I just found a Greek dressing that I really really like.

I hear from the local cannibal that we taste like pig, doesn't speak well of us does it?

My sort of place that. The thing is, I’d order the fillet steak done on the volcano, and the have it rare, so it wouldn't exactly be heated by the volcano much anyway.

They may have asked how volcanicly burnt you would like your steak, but chicken is well.. cooked all the same I suppose.
