Wealth - Old and New!

avatar

I recently received my first gold and silver coins consisting of....

  • 2* gold sovereigns
  • 10* silver Britannias
  • 10* silver year of the pig silver lunars

I only opened up one of each, here they are displayed with my also relatively new nano ledger S: I think I actually prefer the silver, bigger and shinier, the gold's just too small, but actually MUCH more valuable, although not as valuable as the current value of the Ledger!

I quite like the concept - one of the oldest forms of wealth alongside one of the newest....

So I got 10* standard 2019 Brittannia's - as on the right, and 10* 2019 Lunars, as on the left. I did hum and haw about whether to just get one tube of 25, but I opted for splitting into two lots of 10 as it just fitted my budget better. All the coins came in individual cases, which I like, to keep them shiny.

Here's what the stack looks like with the coins in their unopened individual packages (and the ledger). I figure it's better to keep something boxed, so I've resisted the urge to open up the rest of them. Whether this makes any difference to the value I don't know?

For now it all fits in the my proof box which will go in my safe in an undisclosed location somewhere! I'm putting an encrypted USB disk in too, with my various keys and passwords on - the kind of things I'm not storing on a PC permanently.

It's actually quite comforting to have some physical wealth, but what's even more comforting is knowing that even if someone locates my safe, gets into my fireproof box, runs off with and opens that before my motion sensor tracks them, all they're going to get is a grand's worth of silver and gold - there is no way they can get into my ledger, no way they can get my passwords from my USB disk. Thanks to the wonders of super-secure encryption - I can recover my crypto to another device if needs be (my seed phrase is stored elsewhere ahahaha!) and my secure USB - well that destroys the data after 6 wrong attempts at entering the 15 digit password, so good luck with cracking that, you've got more chance of winning the lottery, and you won't go to jail for that either.

Of course it doesn't stop someone breaking in and holding a gun to my head and demanding I hand over my BTC by force.... but then I just fall back on my SAS training, FOOLS!

P.S. The hair in the photos isn't pubes, I was just back from a beard trim.

Pubes, lol!

I've not looked into buying gold and silver. Can you easily sell them for about what you paid? I've also not got a hardware wallet. I don't have a lot of crypto outside Steem. I do need to sort out backing up my keys in a form that a trusted person could recover them if anything happens to me. I think it needs some combination of physical and digital security.

With coins I think it's relatively easy to get the value back. Unlike with bars you don't pay VAT on them.

However the coins are not worth their actual weight in silver.

It's defo a long term hedge.

Some good security you have there. I also like having the 3 Cs...cash coins and cryptos.
It is essential to do a physical and virtual security update every few months. The 'sent box' of emails is one of the worst offenders.
I would recommend tossing the nano box and labelling the nano as usb or something, it will only give people more of an idea of what the thing is.

Actually very fair point on labelling the nano - I'd honestly forgotten that most people would assume it's a USB!

way to put the image of your pubic hair in my mind, thanks for that....

And getting a backup just in case is indeed a sound operation. I am sorting out my keys and figuring out how to explain to my wife the ways to get my crypto in case something happens to me

I guess I ought to find someone to inherit mine. my Dad's not the best option, he doesn't even have a computer or WIFI - he wouldn't have the will to learn about Crypto keys!

It's something i should focus more on really - teaching crypto basics, it is my trade after all: teaching. It is bewildering for the uninitiated, and once you're in it can still be ugly, setting up that whole BEOS thing wasn't fun!

I guess it just comes down to a bunch of web links and passwords and how they all interrelate to each other.... gaining access to crypto, but then there's exchanges - it really is involved - passing it on!

Good for you @revisesociology! I appreesh hearing how others secure their stacks. What is SAS training? "Luckily" i didn't look closely enough to see what could be considered pubes smh 🤦‍♀️ too funny!! Now to keep stacking while the market continues bearish. The bulls are getting all steemed being locked up and held back for so long! Cheers!! Happy Stacking!!

Cheers!

I wouldn't have had you down as a silver stacker with your Steem name, but there you go!

I'm a bit limited in what I can buy for the rest of the year, what with Steem fest coming up, and Steem looking too tempting at these low prices.

SAS training - UK special forces! Don't mess with me!

What is comforting about physical wealth, to you?

It's really just because of the diversity of security - if the whole banking system crashes, at least I've got something that's tangible and portable!

Honestly, these gold sovereigns are so small you could carry £10Ks worth and would hardly notice the weight!

Although in and end of days scenario that weight's worth of water would be more valuable, so a sense of security is all relative I guess!
