Vote Value, Steem Price and Accumulation

avatar

There has been much talk about the value of a vote since the HF.  In some cases, people feel their vote is not worth as much and they are trying to match values to what’s shown on Steemworld.org and Steemnow.com

Both sites will show a different value to your vote.  Steemworld shows the value your vote is worth if the post has already reached a certain threshold of Rshares.  Steemnow shows the value of your vote assuming there are very little other votes given.

At the end of the day you need to remember, your vote counts.  No matter what the monetary value.  Each vote you give, pushes the creator closer to the threshold where the value of votes increase.

Steem Price

The price of steem directly affects the value of a vote.  The price of steem is the lowest I have seen it since I started here over 2 years ago.  At the time of writing that’s only $0.158.  In the last month, the highest price was $0.198.  A 17% drop.  You really need to take this into consideration when looking at the value of your vote and any loss it may have incurred.

Accumulation

The price of steem being low plays in favour if you are looking to accumulate.  You see the value shown on a post is in STU.  Not steem.  This is based on the price of SBD which is currently at $0.795.  Therefore, for every $1 shown as a post pay-out, the post earns $0.795 worth of steem. That’s 5 steem.

The table below shows that even posts with only a 20-cent pay-out value will still pay-out 1 steem.  A pay-out value of $5 will pay-out 25 steem.

Mindset

If you can take a longer term investor type mindset about steem, I think you will do just fine.  If you are currently using your earning from steem to support your living then I am sure you are finding these times a challenge.  There are not enough investors to currently create value that can be withdrawn without it putting further downwards pressure on the price.  Steem needs people with a long term mindset.  Investment is not always about putting in cash.  Investing your time and powering up shows a long term goal.  Time is a scarce resource, and so has value.   Im happy to invest as much time as I have spare, as long as I am enjoying it. I tend to step back a little when I am not.  How much time can you invest for a long term gain?

Wrapping up

Now is a great time to be accumulating steem.  Publishing 5 posts a week with a pay-out value of $5 will return you creators rewards of 62 steem.  That’s not so shabby if you are looking to accumulate. With the higher curation rewards too, well it makes curating a lot more interesting.  Don’t let the low price of steem get you down.  Instead use it as an opportunity to grow.  And if you really want to grow fast, use the low prices to buy in while you can.  When we are back up to $1 for steem you will be mad that you didn’t.

The new rules are quite strange. The biggest change I see is that most people stopped upvoting for comments, because they all turn to dust. Even a 100% upvote of 3000 SP turns to dust. 😣

I guess that instead of upvoting comments, we should look up a post of that person and upvote it instead?

That is not a bad idea... At least it's something, while comment upvotes remain down. I've also seen the approach of upvoting comments with alts instead of main account, to give a reward in a certain token, which is not affected by the dust threshold.

Upvoting posts is good. However let me throw a curve ball I have been thinking about... some people are not creator, but content consumers...we are kinda forcing these to be creators...hence the volumn of not so awesome content. Voting on comments is tricky right now finding a happy work around in the short term is hard. I do believe communities will have reactions..that will be good

Nice write up! :D

I did have a question with regards to re-steems.

If someone re-steemed a post, besides the additional exposure for the author, this does not necessarily add to their direct payout? It's not like, if you re-steem a post you get a greater STU amount... is it?

Thank you!

Resteemed are only for extra exposure. Get a resteem from the right person and it could be your lucky day

I was one of those thinking about reducing my content but the reality is that with Steem so low there is really nothing to lose by not trying to post everyday still. While my content isn’t the greatest (nor is it meant to be), it keeps me present in the journey which is for the long term!

I'm really struggling time wise, now is the best time to be posting if you have long term thinking in mind. I'd love to have the time to do data posts again

I think one of the biggest mistakes SteemIt made was showing the reward values in USD rather than STEEM.

Could this mistake be rectified with some future hard fork?

It's not even us$ is it?? Is it not SBD (which if the peg held would be equivalent to 1 usd)?

Fantastic write up! Curation is the thing I’m trying to wrap my head around! Anyways, I’m in it for the long haul, and I’m accumulating!

I am still getting used to the new voting and the changes that have been made. If it means my vote is worth a little less but a larger portion of the community can earn a little more through curation, then that's a trade-off i will make 100% of the time. Accumulation phase for sure. If everyone using the steem block chain even invested as little as $50, it would be such a big difference in the overall outlook of this chain. And that's only $50

Omg if everyone invested $50 it would make a difference, but the mindset has been to earn and take, not invest

I have been away a while due to health and sometimes I peep in to try to be up to date, I certainly did notice it. I cannot really invest buying at these low prices but holding to what I have.

Thanks for the good wishes, yes I really can't invest but I trust it will get better, anyway I almost never check even the prices, I just happened to have dear friends here that always make me find my way back.
