Fascination with the key of G | Organ music
(Edited)
Tomorrow for the 14th Sunday in Ordinary Time (Year C), I am playing the following organ solos at Mass:
Prelude: Adagio in G minor - Tomaso Albinoni
Communion: Largo from Xerxes - George Frideric Handel
Postlude: Toccata in G major - Théodore Dubois
By coincidence, all the pieces I have chosen for this week are G major or G minor! I must like those key signatures ;)
You might like to have a listen to the popular Albinoni piece that I recorded a couple of months ago:

Nice one. I hope this organ comes available soon to play on again for you. Sounds better than your home organ (no insult intended, just how I perceive it)
Thanks! Actually where I'm playing at today is a different church. I think I've recorded there once for the contest. Maybe I should tweak my organ again or give Hauptwerk a go again. Do you think I should just go for the Basic edition? I only have two manuals and an older laptop...so I don't think I'd need Advanced.
The Basic version is very limited. Most of the recent sample sets can't be played by it, because of the memory limitation. Perhaps some of the free sample sets by Piotr Gabrowsky will fit. If so, than you're in for a bargain because they are high quality sample sets of some very nice organs (the Azzio is my favorite, only 8 stops, yet so cleverly designed you can use is for a whole range of music).
You can choose what ranks to load etc? This would reduce the memory limitation? I played with Hauptwerk in the past but I spent too much time tinkering instead of playing... I really like this little one https://www.milandigitalaudio.com/instruments/symphonic/1902-st.-eucaire-metz-cavaill-coll/?query=category.eq.Symphonic&back=Instruments Would this run on Basic? What are your computer specs?

I did a quick look up of the specs. Basic edition only allows 3 GB of memory usage. The St Eucaire sample set needs 6 GB to be fully loaded. So it won't fit within the limits of de Basic edition. That can be worked around by only loading part of the available ranks. That has however the distinct disadvantage that if you want to use some of the not loaded ranks, you have to configure the sample set again and reload it; which is a time consuming process.
The St. Eucaire is a lovely sample set by the way. Very intimitate, yet powerful when need be, I should use it again sometime...
I build my current computer myself. With the needs of Hauptwerk advanced in mind, the large sample sets I wanted tp use, and taking into account that I'm into a fair bit of computer graphics as well. So it features a multi core CPU, powerful GPU, and lots of RAM: 128 GB.
Memory was still cheap when I build this computer, and luckily I decided to install the max the motherboard would allow. So there is room enough to load the Bavo sample set, and edit a video of me playing it, without having to unload the Bavo sample set.
If you have the resources I'd advice the Advanced Edition. Not only gives that you the possibility to load larger sample sets, it also comes with the wind model, greatly enhancing the reality of the sound.
I hardly ever use the intonation possibilities. With a good sample set the organ sounds as beautiful as the original. However, the acoustical characteristics of where you play Hauptwerk are often far from ideal. This should however be corrected in the sound set up, and not with intonation from within Hauptwerk. For room correction software can be used like Dirac or Sonarworks (that;s the one I have).
Or use a good head phone.
Thank you so much for the detailed comment. Yes, please do share a recording from St. Eucaire! I’ll have to do more research before committing to anything at this stage.
