This is not Venice but we love it!

Actually it is Sitia, the smaller of the three towns of the county of Lashithi, on the east side of Crete, the Greek island that I call home for the last six years. I can't believe that I am blogging for almost two years and I haven't shared not even a single shot from this lovely place. But this is going to change, right now!

I live in a small village about 25 km away but this morning I had to go to the town and I spared some time to take a few pictures, too. The weather is unnaturally hot for this time of the year which is a cause of frustration for my farmer-self but served me well as a photographer!

I started my walk from the beach and the port facing the biggest part of the town which is built on a steep hillside, practically on the water!

As usual I couldn't resist to focus on the beauty of decay that can be found to every human settlement that is around long enough. My feet led me through the oldest parts of the town, all the way up to the medieval castle. The narrow roads are so steep that many of them are made as staircases giving the feeling of a big village!

Although Crete is a major tourist destination, Sitia has managed to maintain a low-key vibe. So during the summer, while the overcrowded west side of the island is struggling to serve the masses of tourists that overflown every well advertised beach and hotel resort, the east side attracts discerning visitors in search of a more authentic and natural scenery!

I was really moved by those flowers that persist to survive on the streets of a 10.000 people's town. I am very familiar with that stubborn plant since it is all over the roads of my home village. But if it is picturesque to see them in a tiny village, it is a miracle to be found in a urban surrounding.

It was fun to wander around as a tourist after I have finished my affairs to the public services as a local! Part of the advantages to live on a place that other people choose for their vacations.

I ended up at the same place that I started, the beach. I'll close my post with a black & white edit, in a little more winterly mood!

The blue water and the blue doors! So cool :)
And I love the shot with that old chimney.
The town reminds me a bit where I love now with the small old houses and bay with boats.
