Market Friday Goes to the Royal Naval Dockyard, Bermuda

avatar
(Edited)

Today is #MarketFriday initiated by @dswigle (Denise! That is me!) Today, I will be shopping and strolling around the Royal Naval Dockyards in Bermuda. It has become quite the Artisan zone, from glass blowers to art galleries to a rum cake factory. And of course the marina, in case you want to buy a boat.

Royal Naval Dockyards, Bermuda

Fridays are all about the #MarketFriday Challenge! Looking to take part in it? Here is how:

How to Participate:

1. Go to the market! Any market will do! Food, Clothing, Plant or Animal, if you wish. You can go to the zoo or an art auction. Anywhere or anything that you pay money for a service. I once went to a nail salon.
2. Take pictures! Be creative (or not)
3. Tell us a little bit about the market, what brought you here?
4. Post the picture(s)
5. Don’t forget to hashtag it! #MarketFriday by @dswigle
6. Drop the link to your post here so I can easily find them

It is always interesting to see the different markets around the globe! C’mon! Show me your market shots! I eagerly await them!

Please leave the link to your post on here so it can easily be found by others. They will all be in one place!! Thank you! ❤

A clash of cultures as this little island is where Britain meets Western Africa and the North American Indians. The mixtures make the island’s culture so different, charmingly so. Right down to the famous shorts that were fashioned after the British military uniform and worn by the locals. How can you not love them?

#4.JPG

The twin clocktowers rise 100 feet overhead; one displays the current time, and the other tells you the day's high tide. Built in 1856, this impressive building was once the Royal Navy's warehouse. As you can see from the first pictures above, it is a major building taking up a block or three of real estate. It holds much of the retail space for the western end of the island.

#1.JPG

In all honestly, the architectural pull was greater than the merchandise. I love the 3-foot walls and cobblestone floors. It is not a large mall, despite its size, and leans more towards an enclosed "strip mall" with many shops. It runs the gambit, from the high-end country club to bazaar trinkets for the tourists.

#9.JPG

The nautical shop with the wavy glass was one of my favorite shops. It was truly unique. The shop had many other nautical items in it.

#8.JPG

Ironically, the Dockyard Glassworks, a Glass Blowing Studio shares a building with the Bermuda Rum Cake Factory. They have all their glass blowing equipment and a small gallery so that you can watch as the items are being made. Colors were added to molten glass and then fashioned and shaped into a vase or another piece. The glass blowers make themselves available for you, demonstrating their skills, going through the entire process for you. Pieces are available in the same space. At the opposite end of the factory are the rum cakes. After sampling them all, I chose the coconut one for my sister. They were incredibly divine.

#7.JPG

This is some of the equipment used to heat, blow and design pieces. They truly make such unique pieces of beautiful.

#6.JPG

Cuban cigars are now legal in the United States since 2016. You can bring them into the United States from abroad, but you may not sell them within our borders. The grass is always greener on the other side of the fence. They are a highly coveted item here in the States.

#10.JPG

A very unusual office space, no? This is where you could rent a Segway or go on a Segway tour. They would ride themselves to wherever the action was. I like the idea. It's novel.

As always, there must be a flower. Always. To color my world. This flower is dedicated to #FridaySkyBlue #ColorChallenge by @Kalemandra, who colors my world every day.

And just like that, this post is done. I hope you had a good time! As always, I want to thank you for taking the time to visit #MarketFriday!! Thank you for supporting the challenge! Have a most fabulous day! Cheers!!

Let the sun shine in on your life
So the joy may touch your soul

I have been discovering new places, some right in my own area! This week, I discovered a new farmers market that will be a walkable distance! I find that super exciting! I love to share and be shared with! I am intrigued by different cultures. It is exciting and yes! I would love to see yours! Don't forget to take photos wherever you happen to be shopping - whether it be the grocery store, the local marketplace or even an art gallery, a kite festival! Wherever money is exchanged for a service or for merchandise. Be different if you wish! It does not have to be a traditional market! We will love it! I promise you! Don't forget to use the hashtag #MarketFriday and @dswigle.

Thank you for visiting my post 💖 Because of you, I come back to post again and again, I am encouraged by you, for the time you take to visit, comment or even upvote. For all of these reasons, I am eternally grateful. Don't ever forget what a wonderful world we live in, people. Let's hold hands around the globe and make this earth really spin. Some days, it is not as easy to see, how wonderful it really is. Kindness counts. Wherever you go, whatever you do.

I always post this poem down at the bottom of my posts. It is one that has become so near and dear to my heart. I only post the most famous part of it, but, wanted to post it in its entirety today.

they set my aunts house on fire
i cried the way women on tv do
folding at the middle
like a five pound note.
i called the boy who use to love me
tried to ‘okay’ my voice
i said hello
he said warsan, what’s wrong, what’s happened?

i’ve been praying,
and these are what my prayers look like;
dear god
i come from two countries
one is thirsty
the other is on fire
both need water.

later that night
i held an atlas in my lap
ran my fingers across the whole world
and whispered,
"where does it hurt?"
it answered,

"everywhere"
"everywhere"
"everywhere"

I like to see the less common markets you find especially when you are on vacation, away from the routine of everyday life!
The market on the island is the top ...
I like Bermuda pants and I have to thank those who invented them ... and you showed us their origin.
You, as always, the best on the market! Thank you.

I do love to try to post something a little bit more unusual oh, I don't want anybody getting tired of seeing my same old posts. I love looking at all the market jobs no matter what they are or where they are. But of course I fear that people get tired of all the effort needed to put one together. I do love the interaction on the post. Thank you as always for showing your attention to Market Friday!

Somehow they look absolutely normal on them, I'm sure he has everything to do with being confident and what you wearing. My father will though he was German also was very much into the Bermuda shorts with the long socks. That went away after a couple years and it wasn't until I really thought about it that I remembered he even wore them. Of course he lived in Britain for a few years and he probably was just being localized. Thank you for being a part of Market Friday!

Yes your right when I saw my Dad in them it looked normal for him, just isnt for me LOL
Yes maybe the time in Britain got him into them from my visits there is summer they are very common especially for the older generation, I wonder if they still are

Always a pleasure to be part of Market Friday My Favorite tag on Steemit :)

Yes!! They looked normal. I'm pretty sure Britain's people have outgrown the need for Bermuda shorts, but I could be wrong!

Old buildings who stood the test of time adds history to a place. If only the walls could talk, we could learn more about history, probable the truth :)

It would be fascinating to witness the glass blowing. I saw videos of glass blowers and it was impressive! It looks easy doing it but I am sure it is not.

Happy Friday!

Oh, yes! Buildings from yesteryear are amazing in the way they were built. Oh, I so wish those walls could talk!

I too am fascinated by the glassblowing, but know how difficult it is! They let us try it in Italy, on the island of Murano.

Oh I can see the shorts and socks, but maybe with some Docksiders and not those clunkers. You know I got to make it my own style and all :)

I like learning about other cultures and would one day love to visit. I can see spending some time on that lovely water there!

Cigars are ok. TBH I never could tell much of a difference with the Cubans but I am not an aficionado though and rather enjoy Backwoods Honey Berry just fine. However I am more of a pipe guy.

Oh sharing a romantic drink at sunset, it doesnt get much better than that! That would be worth the price right there.

I dont know how you always make such fascinating Market Fridays, but you do every week!

Actually, a few of the younger guys wear docksiders as a casual alternative. See, you are younger thinking!! Who knew?

The water is lovely, the shops nice, without being too kitschy and the people are infectiously happy. There doesnt seem to be this overwhelming drive to be the richest or have the most. Just a pleasant vibe of satisfaction.

I agree. I dont care for cigars either! ;)

Who can resist the lure of a romantic drink, especially when laced in the moment of sunset. Ah, holidays are meant to be perfect!

And perusing the local artisans. Thank you for supporting the challenge every week! Always grateful for your presence. As always, have a great weekend!

Segwaying around Bermuda. That sounds like fun.I swear we should just get rid of cars and all get segways instead.

Love who thought of painting the colonial splendor pink. It is so apropos for islands ways. I have to ask was the gallery also airconditioned. That would be a selling point, I think.

I am running a bit behind and hope to get a marketfriday up on Saturday. I hope that is okay???

A post that really takes you there, Denise:) Thank you:)

Very interesting, dear !!!! I know little about Bermuda, only the Bermuda Triangle where ships disappear :))) these are just unique glass crafts !!!! I would definitely buy little stunning bottles and vases. they are charming !!!! if America were not so far from Israel, I would ask you to bring them to me and of course the cake that you described so that I immediately wanted to taste it :))) but I would not ask you to bring these shorts :))) )) I'm sure your sister will be delighted with the cake that you bought for her!

Oh, yes!! It's a good thing I went there as a kid, so I didn't worry about the Bermuda Triangle, but the legend is rather spooky! I can't say that I blame you with a Bermuda shorts and perhaps if I were skinnier oh, I wouldn't mind so much but I can say that they look much better on tiny little people. My sister absolutely love the rum cakes and I just want to thank you for always showing so much support to you Market Friday.
