Market Friday presents...

Portland Head Lighthouse has guided sailors to safety since 1791. Located in Cape Elizabeth, Maine, it is probably one of the most photographed lighthouses in the US. It is automated now, but, there is a wonderful little Maritime Museum that will trace history for you, as they reveal the stories of their fascinating past that will thrill you along with its tragic tales of the many shipwrecks along the coast of Maine.

Fort Williams Park is located at 1000 Shore Road in Cape Elizabeth, Maine. There is parking of about 300 paid parking spots. Parking costs $2 per hour with a 2-hour minimum. A full-day parking pass costs $10. A season pass costs $15.

There is also a museum inside the lighthouse, where the admission is $2.00 for adults and $1.00 for children ages 6-18. Children under 6 are free.

The first picture of the lighthouse qualifies as a bona fide #MarketFriday. You must pay an admission of some sort to get in, so it. There are many different ways to make this work. When I show off a picture, I try to explain it. That is great to see and that makes it really interesting (to me!) to see the different cultures, things to see, places to go.

Go to the market, or anywhere that you pay money for a service. Take pictures! Be creative!

The Portland Breakwater Lighthouse (Bug Light) was a wooden structure built in 1855. Later rebuilt in 1875 with cast iron plates. The architect, Thomas U. Walter, incorporated Greek style with Corinthian columns in the new lighthouse. Today it’s an automated 4-second signal light pulse. I walked the length of the stone breakwater, filing to memory the Bug Light in South Portland. Visiting here gets you away from the city and allows for a little ocean time. On the far side of the lighthouse, you can see the islands and bay. From Bug Light, you can watch the ships come in and out, enjoy the calls of a passing seagull and breathe deeply and enjoy the moment.

History has it that this was a working commercial harbor. During World War II, 1941 to 1945 the Liberty class of ships were constructed here to quickly enter the war against German submarines.

Liberty ships were a class of cargo ships built in the United States during World War II. Though British in concept, the design was adopted by the United States for its simple, low-cost construction. Mass-produced on an unprecedented scale, the Liberty ship came to symbolize U.S. wartime industrial output.source

Beautiful. Lighthouses truly are a beacon of light - in so many respects. I remember seeing that one when I passed through Maine, yonks ago. But the history I didn't know. And, like you Denise, I love the history. Have a beautiful weekend

Being a history buff I loved this post. During the war it's amazing to see just how quickly and efficiently Americans were able to come together, retooling many factories and producing what was needed during this very horrific time.
It seemed as though every American did what they could to support the effort, even if it was planting a garden, now referred to as a Victory Garden.

With the present situation, let's hope that it doesn't take another war to once again unite the citizens of this country.

Very cool. As you know, we have quite a number of lighthouses in Michigan at various locations. My grandma used to collect little light house replicas when she was alive. This makes me think of that. I am itching to get back out to the East coast at some point. My wife has never been to Maine and I can't wait to take her there.

When im reading part of the parking prices, I was surprised that it was so expensive. Much different from parking in my country, so many people can have a car without having to hesitate for other costs.

Btw, this my entry for this friday!

What is it about lighthouses that attract us? I just love looking at them, taking photos whenever we see one. This one looks so beautiful, I would love to be able to go inside and look at that museum! Who knows, maybe one day!
For my contribution this week I've gone Bargain Hunting

I would say the Portland Head Lighthouse of most photographs lighthouses in the world. It is so beautiful. Lighthouses give me a feeling of nostalgia, of reminiscence of times gone by. It makes me think about how interesting life at sea and the life of sailors is. Maine/Massachusetts, states to visit in my bucket list. Have a wonderful day !

The oldie worldly lighthouses have such wonderful appeal. I often wonder how much I would love to stay in one for a little while as the lighthouse worker and his family did. Just imagine the salty smell of the ocean, the sounds of stormy weather and the huge waves crashing up near the lighthouse while being inside all snug and warm in front of the pot belly stove eating hot food etc. It has such a romantic feel to it doesn't it?
Your lovely photo number one created a wishing in me. Actually it would make a great Air BnB business.😀
Sending love Denise💝

Oh I love lighthouses! They completely capture my heart and imagination. And I love the north coast of the eastern seaboard. I lived out there for about five years, spending most of my time in Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Maine. Just thinking about it makes me crave chowder, lobster and calamari. (Not to mention Bloody Mary’s!)

This is a beautiful post. Thank you for hosting Market Friday. My link: https://peakd.com/hive-196308/@jayna/market-friday-shopping-in-old-town-san-diego.

I like lighthouses, too, and wish there were more of them near me. Alas. Maybe I could build one out of legos.

I want to stay in one! There is an Airbnb one up close to the Bay of Fundy. Someday I'm going to make reservations! It's a weird dream I have.

Now building went out of Legos would be pretty cool! I double dog dare you, just because I want to see it!
