Hoy quiero compartir con ustedes un video tocando el capricho 3 de Rode, un estudio que se ve sencillo a simple vista, pero tocarlo completo, limpio y de memoria es todo un reto. ¡Espero les guste!

Today I want to share with you a video of me playing Rode caprice 3, an etude that seems easy with a naked eye, but memorize it and play it clean is a challenge. I hope you like it!

¿Qué es un capricho en la música? | What is a caprice in music?

Un capricho es un estilo musical que suele ser virtuoso, rápido y con un carácter vivo. Normalmente son cortos, pero difíciles, lo que los convierte en algo parecido a un estudio, ya que aporta una gran variedad de recursos técnicos al intérprete.

A caprice is a musical style that is often virtuosic, fast and with a lively character. These are usually short, but hard, which makes them something similar an etude since these provide a great variety of technical resources to the musician.

El compositor francés, Pierre Rode, escribió una de las mayores contribuciones al repertorio violinístico; sus 24 caprichos, que actualmente son vistos como obras para trabajar recursos técnicos, pero no suelen ser interpretados en público, a diferencia de los 24 caprichos que escribió Paganini que además de enseñar una gran variedad de técnica violinística, también se interpretan como obras solistas en conciertos o recitales debido a la fama que estos obtuvieron. Sin embargo los caprichos de Rode, a pesar de no ser tan complejos como los de Paganini, también son considerados muy difíciles.

The French composer, Pierre Rode, wrote one of the biggest contributions to the repertoire for violin; his 24 caprices, which are currently seems as pieces to work technique, but it is not usual to perform them in front of an audience, unlike Paganini 24 caprices, which besides teach a great violinist technique variety, these also are performed as soloists pieces in concerts or recitals due to the reputation they got. However, Rode caprices, despite not being as hard as Paganini's they are also considered difficult.

En el video que comparto con ustedes estoy tocando el capricho 3 de Rode que está en la tonalidad de sol mayor. A simple vista se ve sencillo, pero este trabaja muchas cosas a la vez. Hay que ahorrar la cantidad de arco que usas, ya que debes meter muchas notas en un solo pase de arco o ligadura, y a esto hay que agregarle que tiene muchísimos cambios de cuerda, que si normalmente son difíciles, imagínense poner tantos seguidos en un solo arco y con tantas notas. Otra cosa curiosa es que trabaja el dominio de la segunda posición; en el violín existen muchas posiciones para la mano izquierda, y toda son completamente diferentes, por alguna extraña razón la segunda posición es una de las más incómodas y a veces muchos violinistas evitan tocar en esa posición, así que existen este tipos de estudios que obligan al violinista a tocar solo en esa posición para acostumbrarse, justo como este capricho.

In the video that I share with you I am playing Rode caprice 3 which is in the key of G Major. At first it looks simple, but this works many things at the same time. We have to save a big amount of bow that you use, because you have to play many notes in just one bow stroke or ligature, and we have to add to this that it has many strings crossing, which means that if these are usually hard, you can imagine how it will with many strings crossings in a row with so many notes. Another curious fact is that it works the master of the second position; there are many positions to the left hand in the violin, and all of these are very different, but for some strange reason the second position is one of the most uncomfortable and sometimes soe violinist avoid playing in this position, so there are many etudes which obligates the violinists to play just in this position to get use to it, just like this caprice.

Lograr tocar bien este capricho es muy difícil, todo lo que les acabo de comentar lo muy incómodo, y lograr que suene limpio, afinado y fluido es todo un reto si lo tocas completo ("da capo a fine", como decimos los músicos). Cuando grabé este video estaba intentando verme y escucharme para corregirme y de esta manera mejorar los errores para tocarlo mejor la próxima vez, así que espero que les guste pese a no estar perfecto, mi objetivo principalmente es enseñarles sobre mi instrumento y la música académica.

Getting to play this caprice well is difficult, everything told you before is uncomfortable, and getting all of this to sound clean, in tune and fluent is a big challenge if you play it complete ("da capo a fine" as the musicians say). When I recorded this video I was trying to see and listen to myself to correct me and improve my mistakes like this to play it better the next time, so I hope you like despite not being perfect, my main objective is teaching you about my instrument and academic music.
