Year after year goes by, and so does a whole lifetime. Someone once said, “All we have left are our experiences,” and they were absolutely right. Our story is unique, and we have the power to decide how to live it. In the end, all we’re left with are our experiences and stories. Unfortunately, it can’t be changed, and it can’t be repeated. Believe it or not, I don’t regret a single smile or tear. Every time we go back to that moment, I feel like my memories become more vivid, and I get emotional as if they were happening right now.

I don’t understand why some experts say that memories are bad for us and that we should just live in the present. Well, I disagree—as they say, “to each their own.” My memories serve as an anchor for my present and help me get through the gloomy days. On the other hand, some people say that life is short, and with that I do agree. Because if you live intensely, a single moment is enough to remember a whole lifetime—and above all, to make the most of the opportunities that come your way.

The restless Anacobero—as Daniel Santos was known—used to say, “To remember is to live, when one has loved…” Although some people still doubt it, love is the driving force that moves and envelops human beings. Just like music, we generally associate a song with a person, a situation, a scent, a place, or any moment that has been special in our lives. In the case of telenovelas, many songs have become hits because they were theme songs for famous “culebrones.”

I know some of you might not know what I’m talking about; however, it’s a word used in some Latin American countries to refer to telenovelas—especially when they were very long and tedious. Some directors have the bad habit of dragging out telenovelas because they have high ratings, and this tires the viewer. What could be a great telenovela turns into “just another one of those,” as we say in my country.

I picture my mother, sitting cross-legged, enjoying her downtime. She deserved it—she worked, did housework, made sure we did our chores, and studied. She liked to read the newspaper, Selecciones magazine, or a book. She also watched her soap operas. She was a whiz at knitting and made “baby booties,” baby hats, and socks. The girls’ ones, especially, turned out really cute. Wow! All without taking her eyes off the TV screen.

“Are you going to keep watching, Abigail?”

My older brother would say that to tease her when she switched channels because she was watching two soap operas at the same time. Believe it or not, for women back in those days, their only entertainment was watching soap operas and humming along to the songs. Perhaps young people today aren’t familiar with these songs or the soap operas that inspired them. That’s why I’m going to tell you a little bit about these stories of love, drama, and tears—and the characters who defined an era.

Today is Tuesday, and for this special #ThreeTuneTuesday, I like to look back on those moments when music played a key role. This time, to share with @ablaze, I’m bringing you three songs and a little bonus selection of tracks from famous telenovelas.

Un año y otro años van pasando y así toda una vida. Alguien dijo: "solo nos queda lo vivido", y tuvo mucha razón. Nuestra historia es única y somos capaces de decidir y vivirla. Al final nos quedan las vivencias y anecdotas. Lamentablemente no se puede cambiar y es irrepetible Aunque no lo crean, no me arrepiento de cada sonrisa ni de las lagrimas. Cada vez que retrocedemos a ese instante , siento que mis recuerdos son más vividos y me emociono como si estuvieran sucediendo en este momento.
No entiendo porque algunos especialistas dicen que los recuerdos son negativos para el ser humano y solo hay que vivir el presente. Pues no estoy de acuerdo, como dicen por ahí: “cada loco con su tema”. Mis recuerdos me sirven de anclaje de mi presente y me ayudan a soportar los días grises. Por otro lado, algunas personas dicen que la vida es corta, y con estoy si estoy de acurdo. Ya que si se vive intensamente, un instante basta para recordar toda la vida y sobretodo aprovechar las oportunidades que se presentan.
El inquieto Anacobero, como se le llamaba a Daniel Santos, decía: "Recordar es vivir, cuando se ha amado...". Aunque algunas personas todavía lo duden, el amor es el motor que mueve y envuelve al ser humano. Al igual que la música, generalmente asociamos una canción a una persona, a una situación, a un olor, a un lugar o a cualquier momento que haya sido especial en nuestra vida. En el caso de las telenovelas, muchas canciones han llegado a ser exitosas por ser temas de “culebrones” famosos.
Sé que algunos hivers no saben a qué me refiero; sin embargo, es una palabra que utilizan en algunos países latinoamericanos para referirse a las telenovelas. Sobre todo cuando eran muy largas y fastidiosas. Algunos directores tienen la mala costumbre de alargar las telenovelas porque tienen un ranking alto y esto cansa al televidente. Lo que puede ser una gran telenovela se convierte en “una del monto”, como decimos en mi país.
Evoco a mi madre, sentada con sus piernas cruzadas, disfrutando de su espacio para el ocio. Se lo merecía, pues trabajaba, hacía sus labores del hogar, nos ponía a hacer las tareas y estudiaba. A ella le gustaba leer el periódico, la revista Selecciones o un libro. Además, veía sus telenovelas. Era una arañita para tejer y hacía escarpines, gorritos de bebé y las medias. Sobre todo, las de niña les quedaban muy bonitas. ¡Wuao! sin quitar los ojos de la pantalla de la televisión.
—¿Vas a seguir, Abigail?
Mi hermano mayor le decía para bromear con ella, cuando cambiaba de canal porque veía dos telenovelas a la vez. Aunque no lo crean, las mujeres de hace muchos años atrás, la única diversión que tenían era disfrutar de sus telenovelas y tararear las canciones. Quizás los jóvenes de esta generación no conozcan estas canciones y los “culebrones” que las inspiraron. Por esta razón les hablaré algo breve de estas historias de amor, dramas, lágrimas y de los personajes que marcaron una época.
Hoy es martes y para este día especial de #ThreeTuneTuesday me gusta recordar esos momentos en los cuales la música fue fundamental. En esta oportunidad, para compartir con @ablaze les traigo tres melodías y una ñapita de temas de telenovelas famosas.

I’m out and about with my friend La Pájara Pinta; with my cuatro, maracas, and accordion, we started by visiting the town of Corozal to bring you Carolina Sabino and the iconic theme song from the Colombian telenovela “Las Juanas.” This song was written by composer Willie Salcedo and performed by Juana Matilde in the telenovela. Calixto was a womanizer, oh la la, and he roamed the savanna—and any woman who crossed his path… well, I’ll say no more. Those who get it, get it.

From these romances, the Juanas were born: Valentina, Caridad, Manny, Bautista, and Matilde. They all had a fish-shaped mole.
It aired in Venezuela for the first time in 1997.

Wow! A song that’s here to stay. For me, “Las Juanas” is one of the best Colombian soap operas. I remember my mom dancing in the kitchen.

“The Privilege of Love,” a remake of the Venezuelan telenovela “Cristal,” written by Delia Fiallo. This version was produced by Carla Estrada and starred Adela Noriega and René Strickler. It aired in 1998. The theme song is by composer and singer Mijares.

Some people still ask themselves: What is love? Perhaps because they’ve never felt it or have felt betrayed. However, I truly believe that love is worth it. I always answer yes, because love is that sugar or seasoning that life needs to give it flavor. Whether it works out or not isn’t important. The only thing that matters is loving, and not everyone has the privilege of finding it. So we must be grateful for that person who came into our lives to bring light and color to it.

The telenovela “De que te quiero, te quiero” aired in 2013 and was produced by Lucero Suárez. I really liked the love story between Natalia and Diego. The theme song is “Amor, Amor, Amor” by Manuel Mijares.

“La mujer del vendaval” is a telenovela that aired on Televisa in 2012; the love story between Alessandro and Marcela faced many setbacks. However, in the end, love overcomes all obstacles. The theme song is

OMG! Alessandro and Marcela’s kisses—I’m not sure if they were real. Seriously, they were way too passionate to be fake. Oh my! The main characters were absolutely amazing, as was the plot—especially Marcela’s character and her love for her homeland, nature, and her roots. The characters, atmosphere, and natural settings were all wonderful. And above all, the theme song, “Regálame tu amor.”
